Scientists do not identify a tyrannosaur species from size, one tooth, or a single measurement. They compare a combination of skeletal features—especially the skull, jaws, and teeth—and check whether the differences remain meaningful after accounting for growth, individual variation, preservation, and geological context.

What scientists compare

A species identification is an argument based on a specimen’s character combination. Researchers record which bones are present, how complete the fossil is, whether it is distorted, and where and when it was found. Location and geological age can narrow the possibilities, but neither establishes a species by itself.

They then compare features across specimens, ideally using several anatomical regions. Useful observations may include skull proportions, the shape and contacts of individual bones, tooth-row arrangement, jaw features, and—when available—limb proportions. The more incomplete or deformed a fossil is, the fewer of these comparisons may be possible.

Skull and jaw anatomy

Researchers examine the shape of the snout and rear skull, the orbit and surrounding openings, and how bones meet. A diagnosis may use features of bones such as the nasal, lacrimal, and postorbital, alongside jaw shape and the arrangement of the dental arcade. For example, the published diagnosis of Daspletosaurus horneri relies on a combination of cranial and dental features rather than one decisive measurement. Persons, Currie, and Erickson (2017)

Teeth and tooth rows

Tooth counts, orientation, and arrangement can contribute to identification, but an isolated tooth or one dental character is rarely enough to diagnose a species. A 2025 study of the Tyrannosaurus rex type skull found that two dental characters previously proposed to distinguish species within the Tyrannosaurus hypodigm occur on both sides of the type specimen’s lower jaws; the authors judged those characters taxonomically uninformative. That is a finding about those specific traits, not evidence that teeth are generally useless. “Observations on the skull of the type specimen of Tyrannosaurus rex” (2025)

Other bones and context

If limb bones are preserved, their proportions can be compared with cranial evidence. Researchers also consider the specimen’s geological and geographic provenance and whether its bones are articulated, isolated, or incomplete. These details help assess which comparisons are appropriate; they do not replace anatomical diagnosis.

Why growth and preservation matter

Tyrannosaur anatomy changed as individuals grew. A feature that is prominent in adults may be small or absent in juveniles, so specimens should be compared at similar growth stages where possible. Body size is not a reliable clock on its own: some anatomical characters track size rather than age directly. Currie (2003)

In Daspletosaurus, for instance, the postorbital bone behind the eye develops a larger, rougher cornual process in bigger individuals; a small juvenile has a smoother, less prominent ridge. Yet other postorbital features can help distinguish immature Daspletosaurus from albertosaurines. Growth therefore complicates some comparisons without making all juvenile fossils unidentifiable.

Preservation can mislead, too. Burial deformation may change a skull’s apparent proportions. Scientists must consider whether a difference reflects original anatomy, growth, individual variation, or damage before treating it as a diagnostic character.

Example: Tyrannosaurus rex and Tarbosaurus bataar

In a direct comparison of prepared skulls, Hurum and Sabath describe T. rex as broad at the back of the skull and tapering toward the snout. The compared Tarbosaurus bataar skull is narrower in several bones around the upper jaw and cheek, with a less abrupt expansion toward the rear; its nasal bone also forms a conspicuous dome between the lacrimals. The authors discuss differences in how the skull and upper jaw are arranged to handle biting forces. Hurum and Sabath (2003)

Example: identifying juvenile tyrannosaurids

A 2019 reassessment of Alberta fossils compared the postorbital bone across juvenile and adult tyrannosaurids. The authors identified the small specimen TMP 2013.18.11 as Daspletosaurus from its combination of features. They reassigned TMP 1994.143.1, previously treated as a juvenile Daspletosaurus, to Gorgosaurus libratus because it showed albertosaurine features. The study illustrates how bone-by-bone comparison and analysis of multiple characters can revise earlier identifications.

Why some Tyrannosaurus species claims remain disputed

A 2022 paper titled “Insufficient Evidence for Multiple Species of Tyrannosaurus in the Latest Cretaceous of North America” challenged a proposal to divide those fossils into multiple species based on subtle anatomical and stratigraphic differences. The authors argued that the proposed evidence did not establish the additional species and questioned whether some traits were unique enough to distinguish them from other tyrannosaurids. Woodward and colleagues (2022)

The 2025 reassessment of the T. rex type skull adds a specific caution about two proposed dental distinctions, but it does not settle every question about variation within Tyrannosaurus. The species debate should be described as disputed, not as a settled split or a closed case. “Observations on the skull of the type specimen of Tyrannosaurus rex” (2025)

A practical way to evaluate an identification

  1. Check what is preserved. Note which bones are present, their completeness, and whether they are articulated or isolated.
  2. Assess distortion and maturity. Ask whether crushing or deformation could have altered proportions, and judge growth stage from anatomy rather than size alone.
  3. Compare multiple features. Look across skull shape, individual cranial bones, jaws, teeth, and any preserved limb bones; do not let one trait decide the assignment.
  4. Use context as supporting evidence. Geographic and geological information can constrain plausible comparisons, but it is not a species diagnosis.
  5. State the confidence appropriately. A fragment may be assignable only to a broader group, while a more complete specimen can support a stronger species-level case.

There is no broadly applicable published accuracy rate for identifying tyrannosaur species from fossils. The strength of an identification depends on the specimen, the features preserved, and how well competing explanations have been tested.
