Samsung Wallet is becoming hard to step away from for many US Galaxy owners because it now handles several routine jobs in one place: paying at checkout, storing logins, holding some digital IDs and boarding passes, opening compatible smart locks, and moving money between people. What the evidence does not show is how many people use it that way. Samsung has not published an active US user count, and no independent survey measures whether owners consider it essential. The useful question is therefore not whether Wallet is irreplaceable, but which tasks it can already replace, under what conditions, and where a physical card, license, or key still has to come out of your pocket.
What Samsung Wallet covers in the US today
Samsung’s US overview describes Wallet as more than a payment app. It lists payments, saved credentials, select identity documents, vehicle and home digital keys, boarding passes, memberships, and some Galaxy Watch use. Each of those features depends on the phone model, the bank or partner involved, and the region, so the list is a menu of possibilities rather than a guarantee that every item works for every owner.

Samsung introduced Wallet in 2022 as a merger of Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass, with loyalty cards, credentials, boarding passes, IDs, and keys added to the same app and SmartThings links for home access. The service has grown mainly by adding partner and device integrations to that original base.

Wallet’s stickiness comes less from one standout feature than from repetition across contexts. A person who pays with the phone at a store, shows a pass at a gate, taps a transit card on the commute, unlocks the front door, and signs into apps through Samsung Pass has several reasons to open the same surface every day. That is an inference from the documented feature set, not a measured usage pattern. Samsung has not published data showing how many owners use more than one of these functions.

The practical cost of leaving follows the same logic. Moving payment cards, saved logins, passes, and lock access to another system means re-adding each item and re-testing it, so the switching cost rises with each additional feature you rely on.
Identity documents: real but narrow
Identity is where Wallet is most useful and most restricted. Samsung has announced a passport-backed Samsung ID built with CLEAR for US passport holders, for use at participating TSA checkpoints. Samsung says the workflow reaches more than 250 checkpoints. Its own note adds three conditions: the airport must participate, the checkpoint needs a compatible reader, and you may still need a boarding pass. Treat the 250-checkpoint figure as a count of places where the workflow is offered, not a promise that your home airport accepts it.

Mobile driver’s licenses have a separate limit. Samsung’s US page says the mobile license is available for TSA purposes only to residents of Arizona and Iowa, at select airports and checkpoints. It does not replace a physical license. If you live elsewhere, plan to carry the plastic card when you fly.

Home keys depend on the lock
Digital Home Key is an ecosystem feature. It works with compatible smart locks configured through SmartThings using Matter. Supported access methods, including NFC, UWB, or app access, depend on both the phone’s capabilities and the lock’s capabilities. Rollout started in select regions, and availability for a given lock follows the lock maker’s own timeline. Before you buy a lock with this in mind, confirm the model is on Samsung’s compatibility list for your region and that it supports the access method you need.

Money: what works now and what is coming
Tap to Transfer is a US feature for eligible debit cards from participating banks. Samsung notes fees and limits, and says funds availability depends on the receiving institution. Those details matter more than the speed of the headline, because a transfer can be instant on Samsung’s side and still take longer to appear in the recipient’s account.
On October 7, 2026, Samsung announced USDC transfers inside Wallet. The company says the functionality would reach 82 million US Galaxy devices and was expected during the last week of October 2026. Samsung describes transfers to compatible crypto wallets and qualifying bank accounts in more than 60 countries. As of October 9, 2026, the feature had not launched, so treat any claim that it already works as premature.

Samsung’s Woncheol Chai, EVP and Head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung Electronics, put the pitch this way: “We’re bringing USDC transfers into Samsung Wallet so eligible Galaxy users can get started without installing another app or managing private keys themselves.” That is the company’s description of its own product, and it does not show how many people will use the feature.

Two figures get repeated in promotional material, and they are easy to misread. The first is the 82 million US Galaxy devices in Samsung’s stablecoin announcement. That is the number of devices Samsung says are eligible for a planned feature. It is not a count of people who have Wallet set up, let alone people who use it weekly. The second is the phrase “millions of Galaxy smartphones,” used by Drew Blackard, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung Electronics America, in describing Wallet’s availability. It describes where the app is installed, not how often it is opened.

No source reviewed for this article provides an active US user count for Samsung Wallet or a survey measuring whether owners consider it irreplaceable. If you see a percentage or user total attributed to Wallet, check whether it measures devices, installs, or actual use.
When you still need the physical item
Wallet reduces the number of things you carry, but several tasks still need a fallback. Keep these in mind:
- Driver’s license for travel: If you do not live in Arizona or Iowa, bring the physical license for domestic flights. Even where a mobile license is accepted, Samsung says it does not replace the physical card.
- Passport-backed ID: Confirm your airport participates and that the checkpoint has a compatible reader before relying on it. Carry a boarding pass if the checkpoint asks for one.
- Boarding passes: Check with your airline whether its pass in Wallet is accepted at your departure airport and gate workflow.
- Smart locks: Keep a physical key or the lock’s own app access until you have confirmed the Home Key method works with your specific lock.
- Bank transfers: Check your bank’s eligibility and the receiving institution’s timing before sending money you need on a fixed date.
- Cards: Keep one physical card as a backup in case your phone is lost, out of battery, or unavailable at a terminal.
Security claims are Samsung’s, not independently tested
Samsung describes Wallet’s protection using its Knox platform, encryption, authentication, and secure device storage. The company’s launch-era positioning calls Wallet “a totally safe and secure environment for storing digital keys, cards and more.” Those statements come from Samsung. The sources reviewed for this article did not include an independent security evaluation, so they should be read as product claims. Ask whether a given feature uses your phone’s biometric lock, whether a credential can be removed remotely if the phone is lost, and what recovery steps your bank or airline provides, rather than assuming the answers.

Samsung Electronics’ guidance does not separate Wallet’s convenience from its security. Both depend on your device lock and your choices about which credentials to store.
Taken together, Wallet is most useful to Galaxy owners who want payments, sign-ins, passes, and home access in one place, and who accept that identity, travel, transfer, and lock features each carry their own limits.
