Researchers have demonstrated a laboratory method for separating europium from yttrium in phosphor recovered from spent fluorescent lamps. Tetrathiotungstate chemistry reduces europium and makes it precipitate while most yttrium remains dissolved. The work shows selective recovery under laboratory conditions—not a way to extract europium at home or proof that the process is commercially viable.
What the researchers did
Marie A. Perrin, Paul Dutheil, and Victor Mougel reported the method in Nature Communications in 2024. They began with phosphor extracted from spent fluorescent lamps, rather than placing intact bulbs into the separation reaction. The team treated the material with aqueous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, filtered out glass, and dried the resulting phosphor powder. They then added an extract of that powder to tetrathiotungstate in acetonitrile.
The lamp-derived powder made up 3.3 wt% of the crushed lamp material and contained 0.93 wt% europium and 12.6 wt% yttrium, according to the study. These measurements describe the material used in the experiment, not the composition of every fluorescent lamp.

The key is that tetrathiotungstate is not merely a ligand that binds metal ions; it is also redox-active. The authors propose that internal electron transfer reduces europium from Eu(III) to Eu(II). The resulting europium complex has low solubility and precipitates, while the yttrium complex remains largely in the liquid phase.
#1 Best Overall
- Directly replaces traditional F32T8 or F40T12 fluorescent light bulb if compatible with existing ballast; simple installation
- If your ballast is incompatible or outdated, it can be easily bypassed (direct-wire for single/double-end power). Note: Ballast bypass requires basic electrical wiring; professional installation by a electrician is recommended if needed.
- Clear cover offers high light transmittance for maximum brightness; aluminum substrate ensures efficient heat dissipation; ideal for industrial or commercial applications
- Constructed with aluminum and polycarbonate for superior heat dissipation; backed by a 5-year manufacturer warranty
- 24W LED equivalent to 64W fluorescent light; reduces power consumption by 60%; saves up to 70% on electricity costs
The researchers characterized the compounds and examined the proposed electron-transfer mechanism using structural, magnetic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. The reported separation therefore depends on controlled chemical processing and the different behavior of the europium and yttrium complexes—not on simply crushing a bulb and collecting a metal.
What the reported results mean
Perrin, Dutheil, and Mougel reported more than 99% europium removal from their lamp-derived extract, with an Eu/Y separation factor of 1034. In a model mixture with a ratio typical of commercial phosphors, they reported an Eu/Y separation factor of 2888. A separation factor describes how strongly the process distinguishes between the two elements; it is not itself a recovery yield or a statement that the final product is pure.

The team converted the recovered precipitate to europium oxide (Eu2O3). The reported 90% purity applies to recovery from the model mixture, not to the lamp-derived extract. These are laboratory results and should not be read as plant-scale yields, commercial output, or market estimates.

Phosphor recovery is only one part of processing spent fluorescent lamps. An industrial review describes mercury removal and staged chemical treatment, with other recovery routes involving approaches such as concentrated-acid leaching, solvent extraction, and high temperatures. Those operations address a complex waste stream; the 2024 redox experiment does not establish a complete lamp-recycling process.

The review also notes that the shift toward LEDs has reduced demand for fluorescent-lamp phosphors, affecting the economics of recovering high-purity europium and yttrium. The available sources do not provide a directly comparable cost analysis for this redox method and other routes, nor do they establish commercial-scale economics or an independently verified environmental advantage.
Why this is not a home extraction method
The study used strong chemical reagents, acetonitrile, extracted phosphor waste, and controlled chemical processing. It does not provide a consumer-safe procedure for recovering europium from household bulbs. Spent fluorescent lamps also require appropriate handling because of mercury and other hazardous materials; follow local disposal or recycling guidance instead of attempting chemical extraction.

What remains unproven
The authors reported a provisional patent application related to the work. The sources do not establish commercial deployment, a commercial partner, scale-up performance, or process economics. The result is best understood as a laboratory demonstration of selective europium separation from lamp phosphor, rather than evidence that old bulbs can already be mined economically at industrial scale.
