Researchers find deepwater fish nests by first surveying broad areas for promising fish and habitat, then using an underwater vehicle with a camera to inspect likely sites. Sonar helps map habitat and detect fish; an ROV can provide direct images of fish, eggs, and nest structure. Cameras, passive acoustics, and acoustic tags can add evidence about spawning activity or fish movement, but none of these methods alone answers every question.
How a deepwater nest survey works
- Survey for promising areas. Researchers use sonar to characterize the seabed and detect fish or patterns of fish activity across a broader area.
- Inspect candidate sites visually. An ROV carrying a camera can descend to the seabed and record fish, eggs, nests, and surrounding habitat. This is the step that can turn a sonar indication into direct visual evidence of a nest.
- Record activity over time or through other signals. Repeated video can document visible behavior. Passive acoustic monitoring can detect sounds produced during reproductive behavior, while acoustic telemetry can help track tagged fish and their movements.
- Interpret the evidence according to the question. A visible nest, a fish detected by sonar, a reproductive sound, and the movement of a tagged animal are different kinds of evidence; researchers should not treat them as interchangeable.
What each monitoring method can show
| Method | Evidence it can provide | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| ROV with camera | Direct images of fish, eggs, nests, and bottom habitat. | Shows what the camera can see at the surveyed locations. The sculpin study demonstrates ROV observation at its sites, not the capabilities of every vehicle. |
| Split-beam echosounder and imaging sonar | Acoustic observations of fish and habitat structure over surveyed areas. | Sonar detections are not the same as visual confirmation of a nest. |
| Cameras, stereo video, and video on ROVs or AUVs | Visual observations of animals and, depending on the system, species or size information. | Subjects must be visible and identifiable. NOAA describes these as monitoring tools, not as systems with universally established performance. |
| Passive acoustics | Sounds made by fish before or during reproductive behavior; these signals can help locate or monitor sound-producing species. | It is not a direct way to image a nest and depends on the species producing detectable sounds. |
| Acoustic telemetry | Detection or fine-scale tracking of tagged fish, which can contribute movement and timing evidence. | It depends on tags and receiver or positioning coverage, and interpreting spawning movements can require prior knowledge of behavior and habitat. |
NOAA’s 2019 technical memorandum describes passive acoustic methods as tools used to “detect, monitor and locate the presence of species that produce sounds during reproductive behaviors prior to or associated with spawning.” That makes acoustics useful for some spawning questions, but it does not substitute for a camera when the question is whether a particular nest contains eggs.
What field studies have observed
Deepwater sculpins in Lake Michigan
A 2022 study in the Journal of Great Lakes Research used ROV surveys in Grand Traverse Bay during December 2015, March 2017, and March 2021. The surveys covered depths from 70 to 191 m. On 16 March 2021, researchers observed presumed unoccupied nests and one nest at 190 m containing a deepwater sculpin and a clump of eggs. The authors described it as the first evidence of where and how deepwater sculpins spawn in the Great Lakes.

Atlantic cod off Iceland
During a two-day cruise on 15–16 April 2009 at southwestern Iceland sites, researchers combined a split-beam echosounder, DIDSON dual-frequency imaging sonar, and an ROV to examine cod and habitat. Acoustic surveys found greater cod density and acoustic target strength at a transition between boulder/lava and sand than in either habitat alone. ROV observations included fish rising above the bottom, behavior consistent with spawning; the study did not document cod nests.
The cod study reported fish ascending 1–5 m above the bottom, with average vertical swimming speeds of 0.20–0.25 m/s and average spacing of 1.0–1.4 m. These are observations from the named sites and survey dates, not general measures of cod spawning or nest conditions.

- 6000mAh Battery & USB-C Charging — Fish All Day Without Recharging The built-in 6000mAh battery delivers up to 8+ hours of continuous use on a single charge — even with max brightness and IR on. Recharge via USB-C from a power bank or car charger while you fish, so you stay on the action. For ice fishing below 20°F, keep a power bank handy to extend runtime. Includes a padded carrying case for easy transport.
- 220° Wide-Angle 1080P HD — See Fish and Structure Clearly Spot fish movements and underwater terrain in real time with a 220° ultra-wide lens and true 1080P HD imaging. The wide field of view lets you see not just directly below, but a broad area around your bait — helping you choose the right spot before you drop your line. Unlike sonar fish finders that only show blips, this visual camera lets you see actual fish behavior.
- 50ft Tangle-Free Cable — Strong Enough for Deep Water and Heavy Pulls The 50ft waterproof cable deploys smoothly without tangling and supports up to 66lbs (30kg) load — strong enough for deep lake drops and ice fishing holes. The camera sled glides over rocks and weeds without snagging on the way back up. Designed for freshwater lakes and ponds — for saltwater use, rinse the camera and cable with fresh water immediately after each trip to prevent corrosion.
- IR Night Vision — Clear View in Dark or Murky Water Built-in infrared LEDs illuminate fish silhouettes in dark or murky water, switching to black-and-white for enhanced contrast. In clear water, IR visibility reaches 15-20ft; in murky water, expect 8-12ft range. Tested in Texas ponds at 8pm and still visible — ideal for evening fishing, ice holes, and deep lake drops where sunlight doesn't reach. The camera is waterproof to 50ft depth for reliable underwater use.
- 4.3" IPS Screen with Adjustable Mount — Bright and Clear in Sunlight The 4.3-inch IPS display delivers vivid, true-to-life colors and stays readable even in direct sunlight, thanks to the included sun visor. The adjustable mount attaches to your rod or kayak in seconds, so you can keep your eyes on the action without holding the monitor. This model does not support video recording or phone streaming — designed as a standalone monitor for distraction-free fishing.
Tracking spawning timing
A 2025 study of Arctic char and lake trout paired oviduct tags with acoustic transmitters in some fish and used fine-scale positioning to assess when and where tags were expelled. The authors note that telemetry approaches to spawning can depend on prior knowledge of spawning timing, location, behavior, and habitat. Tracking can therefore add a movement timeline, but it does not itself show a nest or eggs.

Choosing evidence for the research question
The method depends on what researchers need to establish. If the question requires proof of a nest or eggs, a camera-equipped ROV can provide direct visual evidence. If the aim is to search a broader area or characterize fish and bottom habitat, sonar can help identify candidate places for closer inspection. Repeated video can document visible activity; passive acoustics may help with species that vocalize around spawning; telemetry can follow tagged individuals when movement and timing matter.

- Direct nest confirmation: prioritize visual inspection, while recognizing that imagery only covers the camera’s field of view.
- Broad-area habitat or fish observations: use acoustic surveys to characterize candidate areas, then consider visual follow-up.
- Behavior through time: use repeated imagery when the behavior is visible, or telemetry when tagged-fish movements are the relevant evidence.
- Sound-producing species: consider passive acoustics as a way to monitor reproductive signals, not as a method for seeing nests.
- Limited prior knowledge: account for the fact that telemetry-based spawning studies may rely on information about where, when, and how spawning occurs.
The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison that ranks these methods, a universal survey protocol, detection rates, equipment specifications, or comparative costs. The Lake Michigan sculpin work is a direct nest-observation example; the Iceland cod study is evidence about habitat and behavior, not nest documentation.
