A Matter smart lock can secure its smart-home connection, but Matter certification is not a burglary-resistance rating. To judge how well a lock protects your home, check the exact model’s mechanical security evidence and assess the door, frame, installation, and the maker’s software-update support.
What Matter certification does—and does not—tell you
Matter is a smart-home connectivity standard. Its security features include unique device identity, data encryption, and fine-grained access control, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) FAQ. These features help protect connected communication and access; they do not establish how well a deadbolt withstands a physical attack.
The distinction matters: a lock may have a valid Matter certificate without that certificate documenting a residential deadbolt grade or proving resistance to forced entry. The CSA’s directory, for example, lists Level Lock+ (Matter) with certificate ID CSA263TLMAT54361-24 and Matter specification version 1.4. That record confirms Matter certification details, not a forced-entry rating.
The CSA’s Matter 1.3 specification (April 17, 2024) says, “Matter certification will not itself test that these requirements have been met,” referring specifically to the security best practices described in that section. Treat that statement as version-specific; it is not a claim about every later certification test. Read the Matter 1.3 specification.

How to assess the lock’s physical security
Find evidence for the exact deadbolt
Look up the exact deadbolt or lockset model—not merely the smart-lock brand—and check its stated grade or certification against an applicable residential standard. ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2025 is listed as the current residential deadbolt standard; it establishes durability, security, and finish tests. BHMA explains that certified residential deadbolts and locksets are evaluated in those areas, with security including how well a lock or deadbolt withstands impact. A standard’s test results are not a guarantee for every installed door. The ANSI/BHMA standards material says testing is conducted under laboratory conditions and actual results vary with installation, door and frame construction, maintenance, and environmental conditions. A mechanical grade or certification is useful evidence, but it should not be read as a rating of the entire entry assembly unless the documentation explicitly says so.

Check the door, frame, and installation
A deadbolt is only one part of the entry assembly. Confirm that the door and frame are sound, the lock fits the door’s thickness and backset, and the bolt aligns and extends as the manufacturer requires. Check that the strike is installed correctly and that the door closes without binding. Poor fit, damaged framing, or misalignment can undermine practical security even when the lock itself has a certification.
Follow the exact model’s installation and maintenance instructions. For a damaged, weak, or nonstandard door or frame, consider asking a qualified locksmith or security professional to assess the opening; the ANSI/BHMA material specifically recommends consulting one.

What to check in the connected system
Digital protections and physical resistance address different risks. Matter’s identity, encryption, and access-control features can help secure smart-home communication, but they cannot prevent an attacker from targeting the lock, door, frame, or another entry point. The CSA also notes that service-provider and device-maker protections affect complete privacy protection, so a Matter logo alone does not answer every question about account or data security.
Matter security features also evolve. The CSA’s August 11, 2025 announcement for Matter 1.4.2 describes Vendor ID verification and Access Restriction Lists, and notes that some enhancements require coordinated support from device makers and platforms. Check the versions and support provided by the particular lock, controller, and software; do not assume every certified device implements every newer feature. A practical checklist before choosing a Matter lock
- Mechanical evidence: Verify the exact model’s applicable residential standard and stated grade or certification. Confirm what the rating covers.
- Fit and installation: Check door thickness, backset, bolt dimensions, frame condition, strike installation, and the manufacturer’s requirements for your opening.
- Connected security and support: Check the Matter certificate and specification version, firmware-update policy, supported controller platforms, and how the maker handles account credentials and access codes.
- Fallback access and power: Consult the exact model’s documentation for emergency access, low-battery warnings, battery replacement, and what happens if the network or controller is unavailable.
- Everyday operation: Verify reliable locking, correct door alignment, and any auto-lock settings. These are important practical checks, but they do not prove resistance to a determined attacker.
For product examples, the CSA’s Level Lock+ record establishes Matter certification details but does not state a residential deadbolt grade in the information reviewed. Other Matter-compatible listings, including Aqara and Kwikset models, should likewise be checked against current manufacturer specifications and authoritative certification records for the exact model.
