There is no single reliability score for these forms of evidence. A dog alert is a dog-handler decision, bloodstain pattern analysis interprets stains and their possible causes, and firearm or toolmark analysis compares bullets or cartridge cases with firearms. Studies report measurable disagreement in bloodstain analysis and raise validation questions about explosive-detection dog teams; the available sources do not provide a comparable error rate for ballistics identification. The evidence should be judged by the specific task tested, the conditions of the test and the limits of the conclusion—not by how long a technique has been used in court.

What do the new legal studies say?

A University of British Columbia news release published on October 5, 2026, summarizes legal scholarship calling for courts to scrutinize the scientific support for police dog searches, bloodstain pattern analysis and ballistics evidence, as well as the confidence experts express. The release describes one paper published in the Alberta Law Review and two forthcoming papers in the Canadian Bar Review and Dalhousie Law Journal. It does not provide enough detail to attribute particular case findings or more specific conclusions to those papers. Read the UBC release.

Sara Gordon, associate professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC, put the concern this way: “Just because a technique has been used in court for decades doesn’t mean we should take its reliability for granted, especially when someone’s liberty is at stake in a criminal trial.”

What do the studies measure?

Evidence type Task Study result or evidence available What it does not establish
Police detection dogs A dog-handler team searches for a target and produces an alert decision. A 2025 black-box study tested 56 explosive-detection teams at three U.S. locations over two days. The authors report that no team would have passed the tested OSAC/ANSI/ASB Standard 092 certification assessment, with performance varying across sites and trials. Karpinsky et al., 2025. This is not a direct test of drug-detection dogs, every kind of canine search or the reliability of any one alert in a criminal case.
Bloodstain pattern analysis An analyst interprets stain patterns and possible mechanisms that produced them. In a black-box study summarized by the National Institute of Justice in 2022, 75 practicing analysts’ conclusions were wrong about 11% of the time on average; pairs of analysts contradicted one another at an overall rate of about 8%; a second analyst reproduced erroneous responses 18% to 34% of the time. NIJ summary, February 28, 2022. These are outcomes on selected test material, not a universal error rate for all analysts, scenes or casework.
Firearm and toolmark evidence An examiner compares bullets or cartridge cases with a firearm. The UBC release discusses scrutiny of ballistics evidence, but the sources cited here do not provide a corresponding numerical error-rate study. Do not infer a quantified reliability level from the bloodstain or canine studies; they measure different tasks.

The figures in the table are not directly comparable: one study assessed dog-team performance against a certification assessment, another measured analyst conclusions and disagreement, and the available material supplies no equivalent ballistics test result. A percentage from one domain cannot rank all three methods.

What can a dog alert establish?

A detection alert is the outcome of a dog-handler team, not an instrument reading independent of the people and conditions involved. The cited field validation concerns explosives. Its results make validation and performance conditions relevant questions, but they do not justify saying that all sniffer dogs are unreliable or transferring the result to drug searches.

For a particular alert, the useful questions are specific:

  • What target was the team trained and tested to detect?
  • How was the team’s performance evaluated, and did that test resemble the search conditions in the case?
  • What records document the deployment, search conditions, alert and any subsequent discovery?
  • What conclusion does the alert support, and what further evidence is needed to establish what was actually present?

The UBC release also reports a figure from an Australian study about drugs not being found after police dog alerts. Because the underlying study is not identified in the available account, its population, location, period and definition of an alert cannot be checked here; that figure should not be treated as settled evidence about dog-search accuracy.

What do bloodstain analysis error and disagreement mean?

The NIJ summary reports results from a black-box study in which analysts assessed test material without knowing the answers in advance. The observed errors, disagreements and reproduction of erroneous responses show why the method’s performance and limits merit scrutiny. They do not mean every bloodstain conclusion is wrong, nor do they tell a court the probability that a particular conclusion in a specific case is mistaken.

The NIJ notes that inconsistent terminology and classification standards may contribute to variability. In court, it is therefore important to understand the actual question the analyst answered, the observations supporting the interpretation, the method used to reach it, and whether alternative explanations or uncertainty are disclosed. The test-study results should not be substituted for an evaluation of the scene evidence in an individual case.

What newer blood-pattern studies add—and what they do not

Machine learning classifies a narrow pattern task

A 2025 Forensic Science International paper reports 92.89% accuracy for an XGBoost model distinguishing impact spatter from gunshot backspatter. That figure belongs to the study’s classification task and data; it is not a general accuracy rate for bloodstain interpretation. It also does not, by itself, show that an algorithm is independently validated for casework or can replace expert interpretation. Read the study.

Fire can complicate stain interpretation

A paper by Kowalske, Oleiwi and Williams examines alterations to bloodstain patterns in high-heat environments and post-fire scenes. It was first published online on December 19, 2024, and appeared in the March 2025 issue of the Journal of Forensic Sciences. Its subject is a practical caution: exposure to fire can complicate interpretation. The paper should be consulted for its experimental details rather than using the topic alone to infer how a particular stain changed. Read the paper.

Why close-range spatter physics is not ballistics identification

A 2024 Physics of Fluids study, indexed by the Office of Justice Programs, examined how muzzle gases affect forward spatter of viscoelastic blood in close-range shooting. It concerns the physical formation of spatter. It is not an error-rate test of firearm or toolmark identification, which compares bullets or cartridge cases with firearms. Those questions should not be conflated when evaluating expert testimony. See the Office of Justice Programs record.

How should courts assess these claims?

For any of the three evidence types, the central issue is whether the strength of the expert’s conclusion matches what was tested and observed. A useful assessment asks:

  • What exactly was the task? Identify whether the evidence concerns a dog alert, a blood-pattern interpretation, a spatter mechanism or a firearm comparison.
  • What was tested? Establish the sample, setting and conditions, and whether the study was blinded or conducted under operational conditions.
  • What outcome was measured? Distinguish errors from disagreement, detection performance and classification accuracy; these are not interchangeable measures.
  • How closely does the test resemble the case? A controlled study or specific target task may not generalize to a different target, scene or kind of evidence.
  • How far does the conclusion reach? Ask whether the expert separates observations from interpretation, explains limitations and avoids expressing more certainty than the method supports.

The studies summarized here support careful, task-specific scrutiny—not a single numerical verdict on the reliability of dogs, bloodstain analysis and ballistics as whole categories.
