Referee POV cameras capture a first-person view with a small wearable camera, send the feed wirelessly into broadcast production, and use image processing to steady it for live viewing. The system is designed to add the referee’s perspective to a football broadcast—not to replace VAR or give the referee an independent streaming setup.
How a referee POV camera gets from the official to the broadcast
A live referee-view system is a chain of capture, transmission, processing, and broadcast integration. Each part has to work while the referee is running, turning, and making quick changes of direction.
1. A camera captures the referee’s viewpoint
The camera is small and wearable, positioned to show what the referee sees without blocking vision, restricting movement, or creating an injury risk. FIFA’s professional-system requirements allow proposed head, chest, or other mounting positions; its 2026 World Cup Referee View account describes a small, lightweight camera worn on the main official’s head. The wearable feed has to reach the broadcast setup with sufficiently low latency to be synchronized with other match cameras. FIFA lists RF, 4G, and 5G as examples of possible connection options, but does not publish the exact radio configuration or network topology used for Referee View. In practice, the connection is part of a broadcast system, not simply a camera sending a stream directly to viewers.

3. Processing reduces movement shake
Because the camera moves with the referee, running and turning can make raw footage difficult to watch. Lenovo describes a processing pipeline that ingests on-body video, analyzes frames, applies automated stabilization, and outputs a live feed. The detailed implementation is proprietary. Lenovo reported Full HD at 60 frames per second and three-second latency for its Referee View implementation, along with up to 60% jitter reduction. Those are Lenovo’s published figures, not independent comparative test results. Details are in Lenovo’s 2026 account.
4. The feed is integrated into the programme
FIFA says Referee View video and audio were transmitted in real time and integrated live into the broadcast; footage was also used after group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup. Producers can use the perspective to show viewers what the official saw, while other broadcast cameras continue to provide the wider context.

What the equipment has to handle
FIFA’s requirements for professional systems focus on safe and dependable use in a match environment. A proposed system must be securely mounted, durable in weather and impacts, and suitable for live transmission and synchronization. It must not obstruct the referee’s movement or visibility. Ambient audio may be recorded as an option. These are requirements for proposed professional systems; they do not certify ordinary retail cameras for match use.
- Mounting and safety: the camera must stay in place without becoming a hazard or interfering with the official.
- Movement: image stabilization must make footage usable through running, turns, and sudden changes of direction.
- Transmission: the live link must deliver video reliably and with low enough latency for broadcast synchronization.
- Production fit: the feed must be routed into the broadcast workflow, rather than treated as a standalone consumer livestream.
- Audio and control: recording and use of sound are subject to competition rules and organizer control.
The sources do not identify the exact camera manufacturer or model, the wireless carrier or radio setup, or the camera-to-processing network arrangement for FIFA’s implementation. A consumer body camera should not be assumed to match its performance or be approved for professional match use.

How referee-view footage relates to VAR and match rules
Referee POV is an additional camera angle for viewing and explanation; it is not itself a VAR decision system. IFAB Law 5 permits body cameras when the competition organizer supplies them, controls the footage, and follows the applicable guidelines. The law also says a camera microphone cannot be used to broadcast communications with VAR. Camera footage and sound may be used by appropriate authorities for disciplinary matters. Permission is not automatic. On 30 July 2025, IFAB said professional trials could extend to domestic and international competitions worldwide, but competitions had to seek permission from IFAB and FIFA. A referee therefore cannot assume they may independently wear a camera or stream match footage. The announcement is at IFAB’s trial-framework notice.

FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina said the outcome of using Ref Cam at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 “went beyond our expectations,” describing its value for referee coaching and for explaining why an incident was not seen on the field. That use is distinct from VAR review, which has its own defined role and constraints under IFAB rules. FIFA’s interview is available at FIFA’s Ref Cam interview with Collina.
What to compare when evaluating a system
For a training, demonstration, or production setup, assess the whole workflow rather than choosing a camera by image resolution alone.

- Stability: how well footage remains watchable during running and rapid turns.
- Latency and reliability: whether the live feed arrives consistently and soon enough for the intended production.
- Synchronization and integration: whether production can align the POV feed with the other camera angles.
- Audio and privacy: what is recorded, who controls it, and whether the rules restrict its broadcast or later use.
- Approval and footage control: whether the competition organizer has authorized the system and controls its use.
For small-scale exploration, “wireless body camera with live streaming” is a useful category search for training or demonstration equipment. It is not a turnkey professional football broadcast recommendation, and no specific retail model is established as the FIFA unit. A professional deployment may involve wearable-camera suppliers, low-latency wireless-video providers, stabilization and processing vendors, and broadcast integration specialists.
