Rebuilding a worn hydraulic cylinder can reduce demand for new material by retaining and restoring serviceable parts of its heavy core instead of replacing the whole assembly. The material saved varies by cylinder and rebuild; available evidence does not support a universal tonnes-saved figure for one cylinder. Across large refurbishment programs, however, avoided material demand can add up to tonnes.
How a cylinder rebuild retains material
A hydraulic cylinder contains substantial metal components that may remain usable after wear develops. A remanufacturer assesses the returned cylinder, then retains and restores parts that meet its acceptance and performance requirements. Seals and other wear items may be replaced, while worn surfaces such as a piston rod may be restored. The exact work depends on inspection and the provider’s process.
For example, MacGregor’s September 2025 Hydraulic Cylinder Exchange Program document describes rechroming piston rods and replacing seals, stuffing boxes and spherical bearings. This is one provider’s process, not a universal procedure. Caterpillar also offers hydraulic-cylinder remanufacturing options through Cat Reman Hydraulic Parts.

A life-cycle assessment by Yong-Sung Jun and coauthors examined remanufactured construction-equipment components, including hydraulic cylinders. In one modeled cylinder remanufacturing process, replacement parts represented about 2% of component weight. That study-specific result illustrates how retaining the core can avoid replacing much of the component’s material; it does not mean every cylinder rebuild replaces exactly 2%.

Together, the figures support a limited but useful conclusion: retaining a serviceable core can reduce demand for new material, and repeated refurbishment across a fleet or program can produce substantial aggregate savings. They do not establish a reliable material-saving mass per cylinder. Calculating one would require the cylinder’s model and mass, the material retained and replaced, process losses, and a defined comparison with a new unit.
How to assess a rebuild against replacement
Environmental benefit is only one part of the decision. Ask the remanufacturer for details that let you judge whether the specific cylinder can be safely returned to service and what the exchange actually includes.

- Core condition: Confirm the returned cylinder is eligible. Programs have acceptance conditions, and severe damage may disqualify a core.
- Work scope and performance: Ask which parts will be retained, repaired or replaced, what performance requirements apply, and what warranty covers the finished unit. Cat describes its reman products as like-new options, but coverage varies by product and market.
- Core terms and cost: Check whether pricing or savings depend on returning an eligible core and what credit or charge applies. Cat explicitly notes that savings depend on core return and that core conditions apply.
- Turnaround and logistics: Ask about inspection time, shipping, exchange availability and expected turnaround. The available sources do not establish a general turnaround advantage for rebuilding.
- Material accounting: If a quantified environmental claim matters, request retained and replaced material quantities or a product-specific comparison rather than applying general remanufacturing percentages to your cylinder.
Choosing replacement parts for service
Seal kits and other service components are model-dependent. Match any kit to the cylinder’s make and model, bore, rod and seal configuration, and follow the applicable service instructions. A generic kit recommendation cannot establish fit or safe performance across different cylinders.
