When the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) absorbs liquidity, it withdraws funds from the banking system. That can put upward pressure on short-term money-market rates and change banks’ funding conditions, which may eventually affect deposit offers and loan pricing. It does not automatically make every deposit rate or loan rate fall: the result depends on liquidity, credit demand, each bank’s funding mix, and how its products reset.
How liquidity absorption reaches bank rates
RBI liquidity operations are intended to influence overnight money-market conditions. The transmission chain is broadly: policy rates and liquidity operations affect the overnight operational rate; overnight conditions influence the wider term structure; and market rates and bank funding costs can feed into deposit and lending rates. RBI describes the weighted average call rate (WACR) as its operating target.
Withdrawing surplus funds can make liquidity scarcer and raise short-term funding costs, all else equal. But the effect on rates depends on the starting conditions and the scale and duration of the operation. RBI’s earlier analysis found that policy-rate transmission to the overnight call rate strengthened when liquidity moved into deficit; it also noted that surplus liquidity could weaken transmission. That is a dated RBI analysis, not a rule that predicts every episode.
The WACR is a money-market indicator, not a rate a bank must offer a depositor or charge a borrower. In RBI’s H1 2023–24 review, it averaged 5 basis points above the repo rate for that half-year. That historical spread should not be read as a current market quote.

What depositors may see
Deposit rates can respond to liquidity conditions, but banks also compete for funds and respond to credit demand. When lending opportunities grow faster than a bank’s available funding, it may seek deposits more aggressively even if broader conditions are unchanged. Conversely, a bank with sufficient deposits may have less reason to raise its offers after liquidity tightens.
Fresh offers can move before existing deposits
A bank can change the rate advertised for new term deposits without changing the rate on deposits already booked. Existing fixed-rate deposits generally retain their agreed terms until maturity, so the average rate paid across the bank’s deposit book adjusts gradually as accounts mature and are renewed. Fresh and outstanding deposit rates therefore measure different things.
Savings, current, and term deposits do not necessarily move together
RBI’s H1 2023–24 review found different patterns across deposit types during the period it examined: fresh and outstanding term-deposit rates, savings rates, and current-account balances did not respond identically. It reported savings rates as relatively unchanged in that tightening period; current-account balances earn no interest. These are period-specific observations, not a forecast for current bank offers.

What borrowers may see
Loan-rate transmission is more complex and often slower than a change in overnight market rates. RBI describes credit-market transmission as operating through the cost channel and occurring with a lag. A bank’s funding costs are only one input: the borrower’s loan benchmark, reset schedule, funding mix, credit risk, and bank-specific pricing also matter.
Benchmark and reset terms matter
A floating loan tied to an external benchmark can reprice according to the contract’s benchmark and reset frequency. Loans linked to other bank benchmarks may respond differently, while an older fixed-rate loan may not change during its fixed-rate period. Before attributing a change to liquidity absorption, check the loan agreement or statement for the benchmark, spread, and next reset date.

New-loan rates and portfolio averages can diverge
The rate quoted to a new borrower can change before the average rate on a bank’s outstanding loan book does. Existing loans reprice on their contractual schedules, and some do not reprice immediately at all. RBI’s reviews also describe variation in transmission across bank groups and loan measures, so one bank’s movement should not be treated as universal.
Which RBI actions absorb or add liquidity?
RBI’s liquidity-management toolkit includes Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) repo and reverse-repo operations, overnight standing facilities, outright open-market operations, the standing deposit facility (SDF), variable-rate reverse repo (VRRR) operations, and reserve requirements. These tools can manage liquidity in different ways; a reserve-ratio reduction, for example, releases funds rather than absorbing them.
Best Value
- Absorption: Operations such as reverse repos, VRRR, SDF use, or outright sales of securities can withdraw surplus liquidity, depending on the operation and context.
- Liquidity release: Repo operations, outright purchases, or a reduction in reserve requirements can add liquidity to the system.
On December 24, 2024, RBI announced two 25-basis-point reductions in the cash reserve ratio (CRR), bringing it to 4 per cent of net demand and time liabilities in two tranches. RBI estimated that the change would release about ₹1.16 lakh crore in primary liquidity. This dated example illustrates why the direction of an RBI action matters: releasing liquidity is the opposite of absorbing surplus funds.

On June 6, 2025, RBI set the repo rate at 5.50 per cent, the SDF rate at 5.25 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate at 5.75 per cent, effective that date. These are historical settings, not verified rates for October 2026. A rate quote should always be accompanied by its effective date; no current RBI liquidity position or current bank deposit and loan rates are established here.
Quick Recap
A practical way to judge a rate change
- Identify the RBI action and direction. Determine whether the operation absorbs liquidity or releases it, and note its announcement or effective date.
- Check the money-market signal. Compare the WACR and other relevant short-term rates with the dated policy-rate setting. Do not treat the WACR as a retail quote.
- For deposits, distinguish new from existing balances. Compare the bank’s current offer for the relevant tenure with your existing deposit terms and maturity date.
- For loans, identify the contract mechanics. Check whether the loan is fixed or floating, its benchmark and spread, and the reset schedule.
- Allow for bank-specific effects and lags. Funding needs, credit demand, deposit maturity, and bank pricing can make the observed result differ from the simple direction suggested by liquidity conditions.
