Google Search Console can show how many clicks, impressions and what click-through rate a publisher received from Google News and Discover. It does not show the publisher’s ad revenue. To audit revenue, keep each Google surface separate, align Search Console data with publisher analytics and ad-system records, and report any relationship as an association—not as money paid by Google for a referral.

What the audit can—and cannot—measure

Search Console supplies traffic measures; revenue evidence comes from the publisher’s own analytics, ad server, monetization platform, contracts or payment statements. Google says, “We don’t run ads on Google News or the news results tab on Google Search,” while describing advertising on publishers’ own websites, apps and videos as a separate context. Google’s explanation of how it supports the news industry does not establish the terms or payments for any individual publisher.

That distinction matters in the final report. You can say that Search Console recorded a number of clicks to a canonical page and that the publisher’s ad system reported revenue for mapped page impressions. Unless a separate contract or payment record says otherwise, you cannot call that revenue a payment for Google News or Discover clicks.

Keep Google News, Search News and Discover separate

“Google news” is not one reporting channel. Google documents distinct Search Console reports and scopes for these surfaces:

Surface Where to find it What to account for
Google News Google News report in Search Console; covers news.google.com and the Google News apps Reports clicks, impressions and average CTR. It does not include the News tab in Google Search. Daily reporting uses Pacific Time, except in the 24-hour view. App in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions. Google News performance report documentation
Google Search’s News tab Search results report in Search Console, filtered to the News search type This is distinct from the Google News report; do not combine it with Google News app or news.google.com traffic without retaining the separate channel. Google News performance report documentation
Discover Discover report in Search Console Reports clicks, impressions and CTR for eligible content, with available page, country, date and appearance groupings. Data is subject to impression thresholds and canonical-URL attribution; recent data can be preliminary. Discover performance report documentation

Preserve those distinctions in dashboards and exports. Combining them into a single “Google news” figure makes it harder to identify which traffic changed or to reconcile it with the publisher’s own channel definitions.

Build a comparable traffic and revenue dataset

1. Choose the audit window and common date boundary

Use the same complete date range in Search Console, analytics and ad reporting. Search Console defaults to the last three months, but its date filter can be changed. Google News daily data and Discover date tables use Pacific Time; if another system uses a different time zone, shift or aggregate the records to a common boundary before comparing daily totals. Differences in time zones are one reason Search Console can disagree with other tools. Google News report documentation and Discover report documentation.

For settled comparisons, use completed days. Search Console’s recent values may be preliminary and can change over the next few hours; the 24-hour view shows preliminary hourly points by default. Mark incomplete or provisional periods rather than treating them as final.

2. Export traffic at a useful level

For each surface, capture clicks, impressions and average CTR. Where available and useful, group by date, page and country; Discover also offers appearance groupings. Keep the surface label with every record so that a News report row cannot be mistaken for a Discover or Search News row.

3. Map URL variants to canonical pages

Google News and Discover assign page metrics to canonical URLs. A duplicate or alternate URL may show no values even when the canonical page receives the attributed traffic. Map tracking parameters, alternate paths and other URL variants to their canonical page before joining Search Console results to landing-page analytics or ad reports.

4. Join to publisher-side monetization records

For the same dates and mapped pages, retrieve publisher analytics measures such as sessions or landing visits, plus ad-system measures such as ad impressions and reported revenue. Keep revenue sources distinct where the system allows it—for example, direct-sold, auction or other demand categories—and label any modeled or unattributed allocation as such. Search Console does not provide these publisher revenue fields.

A practical audit table can use the following columns. The traffic measures come from Search Console; the remaining fields come from the publisher’s systems.

Field Purpose
Date, normalized time zone Align the reporting boundary across systems.
Surface Keep Google News, Search News and Discover distinct.
Canonical page Join URL variants to the page receiving Search Console attribution.
Search Console clicks, impressions and CTR Describe reported referral performance for the surface.
Publisher analytics sessions or landing visits Compare the arrival activity recorded by the publisher’s analytics system.
Ad impressions and reported revenue Show the publisher-side monetization records for mapped pages and periods.
House yield measure, such as revenue per thousand impressions Provide context for revenue relative to the publisher’s chosen impression denominator.
Reconciliation notes Record scope differences, missing rows, allocation rules or other exceptions.

Investigate mismatches before interpreting a change

When Search Console, analytics and ad reports do not line up, check the reporting rules and joins before concluding that revenue rose or fell because of a Google surface.

  • Date boundaries: Confirm that all systems use the same start and end dates and time zone. Daily Google News and Discover reporting uses Pacific Time.
  • Channel scope: Verify that Google News, Search News and Discover have not been grouped differently across reports.
  • URL mapping: Check canonical URLs, redirects, alternate URLs and landing-page naming before joining rows.
  • Provisional or partial data: Exclude incomplete days from settled comparisons or clearly label them as preliminary.
  • Threshold-suppressed rows: Discover reporting has minimum impression thresholds. Some data below a row threshold may still be included in site totals, so visible rows need not add up to the total.
  • Different counting rules: Google News app in-article swipes and notifications are not counted as clicks or impressions in the Google News report.
  • Publisher-side monetization: Inspect ad demand, match rate, impression allocation and unfilled impressions alongside traffic. The Google News Initiative’s March 2020 News Business Optimization Playbook says, “Revenue: The primary metric to review first is revenue,” and recommends reviewing revenue sources and these operational indicators daily. Treat it as operational guidance, not a guarantee that every current system uses the same interface or definitions.

Interpret Discover changes cautiously

Discover is less predictable than keyword-driven Search traffic. Google Search Central says, “Traffic from Discover is less predictable or dependable when compared to keyword-driven search visits.” Its guidance names changes in user interests, content types and Search updates as possible causes of traffic fluctuations; a decline does not by itself establish a site defect or editorial change. Google describes Discover as supplemental to keyword-driven traffic. Google Search Central’s Discover guidance.

Search Console’s Discover report covers eligible content from the last 16 months, subject to a minimum impression threshold. Its row visibility is therefore not a complete ledger of every page with some Discover exposure. Review site totals as well as visible rows, and avoid treating a missing row as proof of zero traffic. Google Search Central’s Discover guidance.

Keep referral revenue distinct from contracts and modeled value

Search Console referral measures do not establish contract payments, ad revenue or the value of an individual click. News Showcase may appear in Google News and Discover, but participation arrangements are distinct from Search Console referral reporting. Audit any Showcase or other agreement against the publisher’s own contract and payment statements, not by inferring a payment from clicks. Google’s news-industry page.

Google’s page cites a PwC study of 218 publishers in 38 countries and estimates an average value of a click at US$0.06–US$0.08, with estimates of US$0.13–US$0.15 for regional and local publishers. The page does not state the study year. These are modeled averages cited by Google, not an individual publisher’s realized revenue, a guaranteed payment, or a Discover-specific rate. Google’s news-industry page.

The same page reports that more than 24 billion monthly clicks go from Google Search and Google News results to publisher websites. That is Google’s broad estimate, not a Discover-only figure. It also reports that under 2% of total Google Search queries globally in 2022 were news queries; that is a historical share, not a current traffic or revenue estimate. Google’s news-industry page.
