Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank whose output on the port you will use matches the charging input your specific laptop supports. First verify that the laptop accepts USB-C charging and identify the correct port; then check the laptop maker’s specifications and the bank’s per-port output. Wattage determines how quickly power can be supplied. Capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), determines how much energy the bank stores.
How to find the right power-bank wattage
- Confirm USB-C charging support and the right port. A USB-C connector does not by itself mean the laptop can charge through it. Check the exact model’s manual or specifications; if it has multiple USB-C ports, confirm which supports charging. MSI advises checking the manual, and Dell notes that power behavior can vary by platform and may differ when the laptop is running on battery. MSI’s guidance and Dell’s guidance are model- and platform-dependent.
- Look up the supported charging input. Use the laptop manufacturer’s stated USB-C charging limit and adapter specification. The bundled adapter’s wattage is a useful reference, but does not prove that every USB-C port accepts that much power from a power bank.
- Match the bank’s output on the port you will use. Check its USB-C PD wattage and supported voltage/current profiles. A bank’s headline maximum may apply only to one port or change when it is charging multiple devices. MSI says suitable PD banks with output equal to or above the bundled adapter rating work for supported MSI laptops, but its guidance is specific to MSI; it also warns that models bundled with adapters above 100 W should use a maximum-100 W PD bank as battery backup. Do not treat that advice as a universal rule for other brands. MSI product information.
- Check the USB-C cable rating. The laptop, bank, port, and cable all affect the power available. USB PD 3.1 supports up to 240 W with a suitable full-featured USB-C cable, but that is the standard’s ceiling—not a promise that a particular laptop or bank supports 240 W. The devices negotiate an available power level. USB-IF’s USB PD overview.
- Choose capacity separately. Compare the bank’s Wh rating for the amount of energy you want to carry; do not use a high Wh figure to compensate for an incompatible port or insufficient output wattage.
Will a 65 W, 100 W, or 140 W power bank charge your laptop?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer without the laptop model. A 65 W bank can supply up to its rated output only if the laptop accepts USB-C PD at a compatible level and the selected port and cable support it. The same compatibility check applies to 100 W and 140 W banks. If the bank can supply less than the laptop’s normal adapter, it may charge more slowly or extend runtime—but only where the laptop supports that lower input; consult its documentation rather than assuming.
A properly negotiated, standards-conforming higher-wattage PD source does not simply force its maximum output into a laptop. The devices negotiate available power. Still, compatibility depends on the laptop’s USB-C PD input, the power bank’s implementation, the port, and the cable. Check manufacturer documentation and choose a reputable product with clearly stated specifications; a “USB-C PD” label alone is not a guarantee of compatibility or safety. USB-IF’s USB PD overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWattage is not the same as capacity or charge count
Wattage describes the rate at which the bank can provide power. Watt-hours describe stored energy. A bank can have a higher output wattage yet store slightly less energy, so compare both figures.

An idealized comparison is:
Ideal full-charge equivalents ≈ power-bank Wh ÷ laptop battery Wh
This is an upper-bound comparison, not a prediction of real-world full charges. Conversion losses and energy used by the laptop while connected reduce what reaches its battery. Actual results also depend on workload and the devices’ charging behavior.

A Dell Technologies datasheet from April 2024 lists two Targus examples: a 100 W USB-C bank rated at 90 Wh (25,000 mAh), and a 140 W USB-C bank rated at 86.4 Wh (24,000 mAh). The 100 W model is listed as USB PD 3.0 and the 140 W model as PD 3.1. Dell says its 90 Wh model can fully charge a 38 Wh Dell laptop twice; that is a manufacturer claim for those stated products, not a general guarantee. How to compare capacity in Wh
When a power bank lists only milliamp-hours (mAh), that number is incomplete unless you know the voltage used for the rating. The FAA gives these conversions:

For choosing among banks, compare their stated Wh ratings and consider how much weight you are willing to carry. Also check per-port output, multi-device output behavior, cable capability, documented protections, warranty, and availability in your region. Protections such as overcharge, overvoltage, overcurrent, overheating, short circuit, or temperature protection are product-specific; verify them in the product documentation rather than assuming all banks include the same features.

Travel limits are separate from charging compatibility. For US passenger travel, the FAA says spare batteries, including power banks, must be carried in cabin baggage. Its guidance allows 0–100 Wh, requires airline approval for 101–160 Wh, and forbids batteries above 160 Wh. Airlines may set stricter rules, so check with the operating airline.
