PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for PS5 Pro. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from game imagery rather than requiring the console to render every output pixel directly. Sony has described its pixel-by-pixel analysis and the upgraded version’s revised neural network, but has not published enough algorithm detail or controlled comparisons to establish that PSSR always produces native 4K or universally beats Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR.
What PSSR does on PS5 Pro
Sony introduced PSSR as an AI-driven, machine-learning-based upscaling feature for PS5 Pro. Its purpose is to help games deliver a sharp image at a lower rendering cost than producing every output pixel directly. The exact internal resolution and performance tradeoff depend on each game’s implementation; Sony does not publish a fixed resolution saving or frame-rate gain for all titles.
PSSR is not a separate accessory or a universal option for every PlayStation game. It must be supported by a game, and Sony cautions that results vary by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro product page positions PSSR as a way to enhance resolution for 4K displays, but that does not mean a game is rendered natively at 4K or that every supported game uses the same output process.

How Sony says PSSR reconstructs an image
In a February 27, 2026 announcement, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny described the technology this way: “PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” That is the clearest public explanation of PSSR’s operation in Sony’s cited material.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The description supports calling PSSR an image-reconstruction upscaler. It does not disclose the complete network architecture, training data, inputs, or reconstruction mathematics. It is therefore not possible to reliably infer from Sony’s public explanation that PSSR uses the same inputs or processing steps as a PC upscaler. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement introduced PSSR alongside the console’s upgraded GPU and ray-tracing capabilities.
What changed in the upgraded PSSR
Sony announced a revised PSSR on February 27, 2026. Cerny said it takes “a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm.” He attributed the revised network and algorithm to Sony’s Project Amethyst partnership with AMD, and said the approach is based on technology also reflected in AMD FSR 4, with further refinement for PS5 Pro. That relationship does not make the console implementation and PC FSR 4 identical products, nor does it guarantee that their results transfer between platforms.

Sony said the upgraded version improves fine-detail clarity and image stability, including more precise reconstruction and improved stability in motion, and gives developers more flexibility when balancing performance and image fidelity. These are Sony’s descriptions of the revised technology, not a standardized cross-game measurement.

How to enable the image-quality option
Sony’s March 16, 2026 rollout post says PS5 Pro owners can use the system setting Enhance PSSR Image Quality for games that already support PSSR. The option is not a way to add PSSR support to an unsupported game.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- On a PS5 Pro, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Turn on Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
If a game shows unexpected visual effects, Sony says the setting can be turned off. The option’s effects vary by title; it is not a guarantee that every supported game will look better in every scene. See Sony’s upgraded PSSR rollout details for its description of the rollout and title support.
What developers have reported in specific games
Developer comments offer examples of how the upgraded version may behave in particular games. They are attributed impressions, not independent, controlled tests or guarantees about other titles.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
- Resident Evil Requiem: Sony identified it as the first game using upgraded PSSR. Capcom’s Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager in Engine Development Support/R&D Foundational Technology, said the update helped process intricate details, including individually rendered hair strands and texture characteristics.
- Control and Alan Wake 2: Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto said upgraded PSSR improved upscaling quality and stability and responded quickly to visibility changes.
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Director Naoki Hamaguchi of Square Enix said fine details such as character hair were restored more naturally, with less flickering and afterimage.
Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That is Sony’s count of titles using PSSR, not a count of games using the upgraded version. Separately, Sony’s product page described over 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for PS5 Pro; that broader figure is not a PSSR-support count.
How PSSR compares with DLSS and FSR
PSSR, DLSS, and FSR are upscaling technologies integrated into individual games. Comparing their names alone does not establish which produces the best image or performance: implementation, hardware, game settings, input resolution, and scene all matter. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal winner.

| Comparison point | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Platform | PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro feature. DLSS and FSR are separate technologies used on compatible PC hardware and, in some cases, other platforms. Support varies by device and game. |
| Game implementation | Compare the same game and build, scene, output resolution, graphics preset, and performance mode where possible. A result from one game does not establish a ranking across all games. |
| Image behavior | Look at fine geometry, hair, foliage, particles, thin lines, shimmer, flicker, ghosting, and stability during motion. Sony and developers have highlighted fine detail and motion stability for upgraded PSSR, but those descriptions are not a standardized comparison with DLSS or FSR. |
| Performance | Compare frame rate and image quality at a comparable rendering workload. A console performance mode is not directly comparable to a PC benchmark using different hardware and settings. |
| Evidence | Distinguish official technical descriptions, developer comments, and independent controlled tests. Each supports a different level of conclusion; a single-game comparison cannot settle a technology-wide ranking. |
For a fair practical comparison, use matched captures and settings, then inspect both still frames and motion. Without that control, apparent differences may reflect the game’s implementation or test conditions rather than the upscaler alone.
Does PSSR make games 4K?
Not necessarily in the sense of native 4K rendering. PSSR upscales or reconstructs game imagery for a higher-resolution output, and Sony markets the feature around 4K image output. A 4K output signal does not prove that the game rendered every pixel at native 4K; the starting resolution and reconstruction vary by title.
Sony’s public explanations establish the broad purpose and pixel-by-pixel analysis, but not the exact rendering resolution or internal workings for every game. Treat resolution labels and performance claims as game-specific rather than as a blanket promise about PS5 Pro.
