Play FORE’s developer says the iPhone golf game reads swing speed and wrist roll as you swing the phone like an 8-iron, then uses that movement to produce a shot. Apple’s Core Motion APIs can provide device-motion updates at around 100 Hz or more on supported hardware, but no available developer statement confirms that FORE itself samples at 100 Hz. The distinction matters: Apple documents what its framework can do; FORE’s developer describes the game’s inputs, not its sampling rate or swing algorithm.

What FORE says it reads from your swing

In a post on r/SoloDevelopment, the developer describes FORE this way: “CoreMotion reads swing speed and wrist roll while you hold the iPhone like an 8-iron, then turns that into a shot at one island green.” That is a first-party description of the game, not an independently verified account of its accuracy or implementation.

In practical terms, the phone’s motion is the controller: the game interprets movement rather than requiring a separate golf sensor or club attachment. The developer’s post does not explain exactly how swing speed and wrist roll are calculated, how a swing is separated from other phone movement, or how those inputs affect the resulting shot.

What Core Motion contributes

Core Motion is Apple’s framework for accessing motion and environment-related data from device hardware. Apple distinguishes raw sensor readings from processed device-motion data. The processed service combines sensor inputs and can expose device attitude, unbiased rotation rate, gravity, user acceleration, and magnetic-field data. An app can use such signals to understand how a device is moving and oriented; the framework’s capabilities alone do not reveal which signals FORE uses beyond the developer’s stated swing speed and wrist roll.

Apple’s documentation gives a golf-swing example in which an app uses an arbitrary horizontal orientation and a vertical z-axis to measure changes relative to the device’s starting position. That illustrates one possible reference frame for analyzing a swing; it does not establish that FORE uses that setup, or disclose its filtering, calibration, thresholds, or mapping from movement to shot result. See Apple’s processed device-motion documentation.

What the 100 Hz figure does—and does not—tell you

A hertz is a rate: 100 Hz means 100 updates per second. It is a description of how often motion data may be updated, not a score for swing quality or a guarantee about what a particular app requests or receives.

Apple’s current processed device-motion documentation says the maximum update frequency is hardware-dependent and usually at least 100 Hz. In a 2023 presentation, an Apple Core Motion engineer described CMMotionManager as providing data at a maximum of 100 Hz on a per-sample basis. Those are framework-level statements, and the exact maximum depends on hardware and API context. Neither statement confirms FORE’s configured or actual sampling rate.

The evidence about FORE is narrower: its developer says the game uses Core Motion to read swing speed and wrist roll, but does not state a frequency. It is accurate to say Apple’s APIs can support motion data around 100 Hz or higher on supported hardware and that FORE’s developer describes those two inputs. It is not established that FORE samples at 100 Hz.

How Apple’s higher-rate batched API differs

Apple’s WWDC23 presentation also describes CMBatchedSensorManager, a separate interface for supported Apple Watch devices. In Apple’s example, it delivers batches at up to 200 Hz for device motion and 800 Hz for accelerometer data. The example detects a baseball swing: an accelerometer signal identifies impact, while rotation relative to gravity helps identify the swing’s start. Apple notes that similar detailed, short-duration motion capture can be useful for golf, but this is an illustration of Apple’s APIs—not evidence that FORE uses CMBatchedSensorManager.

Apple compares the amount of accelerometer data available in a 0.1-second interval: 80 data points at 800 Hz versus 10 at 100 Hz. The presentation frames batched high-rate data as useful for workout-centered cases where detailed motion capture matters and tight delivery latency is not necessary. The example requires an active HealthKit workout, and the presentation identifies support for Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra. These watch-specific rates and requirements should not be transferred to FORE’s iPhone implementation.

  • ZERO ANNUAL FEES + ENVIRONMENTAL SENSORS: Enjoy a great app with zero subscription required! One-time download, lifetime use, and all features are fully accessible. Built-in temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure modules automatically adjust your shot data to real-time conditions. This provides improved accuracy for both indoor and outdoor training with absolutely no hidden fees.
  • EXPANDED METRICS & SPACE REQUIREMENT: Tracks Attack Angle, Launch Angle, Spin Rate, Ball Speed, and Club Speed for detailed swing insights. Perfect for indoor/outdoor use (Note: Does not measure horizontal club face angle or swing path). IMPORTANT: Indoor use requires at least 15ft of total space (place the device exactly 5ft behind the ball, allowing 10ft of ball flight) to ensure accurate radar tracking.
  • MULTI-ANGLE PRACTICE VIEWS & SMART ALERTS: Review your swing using fixed multi-angle practice views, including 45° and 90° perspectives, along with shot trajectory display for easier swing evaluation. Select the correct club before each swing for more consistent data. If a shank or missed shot is detected, the device provides an alert and records club speed only to avoid inaccurate shot data.
  • PERSONALIZED TRAINING & DISTANCE CALIBRATION: Accurately tracks Carry Distance with verified ±1 yard tolerance under recommended alignment. It also features a Distance Compensation function, allowing you to fine-tune yardage from 80% to 120% (default 100%) for each specific club. Once calibrated, your data will align measured carry distances with your typical on-course performance both indoors and outdoors.
  • PREMIUM METAL BODY & SMART APP EXPERIENCE: Features an OLED display and a durable metal body (For optimal Bluetooth connection, please place your phone in front of the device). The app supports real-time voice feedback, and you can easily double-click the power button to mute or unmute the device sound at any time. Quick access via Guest Mode or third-party accounts makes your training engaging and hassle-free.

What remains unknown about FORE

  • Sampling rate: The developer post does not say whether FORE requests or receives 100 Hz updates.
  • Supported devices and software: The post identifies an iPhone game but does not specify compatible iPhone models or a minimum iOS version.
  • Swing interpretation: The developer names swing speed and wrist roll, but does not describe how they are measured, segmented, calibrated, or translated into shot behavior.
  • Accuracy: No independent test or validation against measured swings is established by the cited statements.

Those details would be necessary to assess how consistently the game interprets different players’ swings. The available description supports an explanation of the stated inputs and Apple’s framework capabilities, not a claim about measured performance.
