Pixel Watch faces are controlled from either the Google Pixel Watch app or the watch itself. On your phone, choose or edit a face, then tap Use on watch to apply it. On the watch, touch and hold the current face, swipe to another one, and tap it. These actions apply a selected face; Google does not describe ordinary face changes as a continuous, instant two-way mirror.
“Sync” also describes separate setup operations. Moving an existing watch to a new phone can leave faces temporarily pending, while restoring a backup to a replacement watch can bring back the previous face and settings. The steps and expectations differ for each case.
What “sync” means for Pixel Watch faces
There are three different operations that are often called syncing:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Applying a face: You select a face in the Pixel Watch app and send it to the paired watch, or select one directly on the watch.
- Transferring a watch: You move the same watch to a different phone. Google warns that faces may take some time to sync after the transfer finishes.
- Restoring a replacement watch: You restore a backup made from the old watch. Google says the backup can include the watch face, settings, apps, data and tiles.
Google’s help pages do not define a routine face edit as a continuously synchronized, bidirectional stream. A change made in one place is an instruction to apply a face, not a promise that every subsequent edit will mirror immediately in both directions.

Apply a watch face from your phone
The phone app is a control surface for the watch face gallery and its customization options. Use this method when browsing a larger gallery or when editing complications and colors is easier on the phone.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on your phone.
- Tap Watch faces.
- Browse the available faces and tap the one you want.
- Tap Edit if you want to change colors or complications.
- Tap Use on watch to apply the selection.
The final Use on watch command is the action that sends the selected configuration to the paired watch. If you only preview or edit a face and do not use that command, the current face on the watch may remain unchanged.

What you can edit
Depending on the face, the editor can expose color choices and complication slots. Complications are the small information areas that can show items such as a date or another watch function. Available options vary by face; the help instructions do not promise that every face supports the same controls.

Change or edit the face directly on the watch
You do not need the phone for the basic face switch. On the watch:
- Touch and hold the current watch face.
- Swipe through the available faces.
- Tap the face you want to use.
- Choose Edit first if you need to adjust its colors or complications, then save or apply the changes shown on the watch.
This is a local selection on the watch. It is separate from opening the gallery in the phone app, although both methods change the face currently displayed by the watch.
Phone app versus watch: which workflow to use
| Workflow | Where you start | Main action | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choose a standard face on the phone | Pixel Watch app > Watch faces | Edit if needed, then Use on watch | Applies the selected face and configuration to the paired watch |
| Choose a standard face on the watch | Current watch face | Touch and hold, swipe, tap | Changes the face directly on the watch |
| Edit on the phone | Pixel Watch app > Watch faces | Tap Edit, adjust available options, then Use on watch | Sends the edited colors or complications to the watch |
| Edit on the watch | Face picker on the watch | Choose Edit before applying | Adjusts the controls offered by that face on the watch |
Neither workflow establishes a published timing guarantee for ordinary face changes. If you are moving to another phone or restoring a watch, use the transfer or backup process instead of treating the change as a normal face selection.
Set a face made from your personal photos
A Photos face has additional requirements and a separate setup flow. Google says the Pixel Watch app on the phone and Google Photos on both the phone and watch should be up to date.

- Update the Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Update Google Photos on both the phone and the watch.
- Open the Pixel Watch app and tap Watch faces.
- Tap Add new, then choose Photos and select the Photos face.
- Select up to 30 photos.
- Tap Add, then Save.
Google also documents starting the Photos-face setup from the watch. The exact choices can vary with the watch software and app version, but the photo limit and the requirement for current versions of the relevant apps apply to the documented phone flow.
Why a Photos face can behave differently
A standard face is a packaged watch-face design. A Photos face also depends on the selected image set and Google Photos being available on both devices. If the face is missing photos, check those app updates before assuming that ordinary face selection has failed.
Transfer your existing Pixel Watch to a new phone
Transferring a watch is not the same as selecting a face. Google’s documented transfer method requires Wear OS 4. Start the process from either the watch or the Pixel Watch app on the old phone.
- On the watch, open Settings > System and choose the transfer option; or on the old phone open the Pixel Watch app and go to System > Transfer watch > Start transfer.
- Follow the transfer instructions on the old phone and watch.
- On the new phone, open the Pixel Watch app and add the watch.
- Complete pairing and the remaining setup prompts.
After the transfer is complete, Google cautions: “Watch faces may take some time to sync after Watch Transfer is completed.” This warning applies specifically to the transfer process. Google does not provide a numeric estimate in the cited help page, so do not treat a particular number of minutes or hours as an official expectation.

- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
If a face is not visible immediately after transfer
- Finish every pairing and setup screen on the new phone before judging the result.
- Allow time for the post-transfer synchronization described by Google.
- Confirm that the Pixel Watch app and watch software are current.
- Reopen the watch-face section after setup has settled and check whether the face is available.
If a face remains absent after setup and updates, Google’s published pages do not provide a face-specific recovery sequence or a guaranteed propagation time. Avoid repeatedly treating the transfer as a fresh face installation until pairing is complete.
Restore faces when replacing the watch
A replacement-watch setup uses a backup rather than a transfer of the same physical watch. Google says a backup can restore the old watch’s apps, data, settings, watch face and tiles to a new watch.
Prepare the old watch
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi.
- Place it on its charger.
- In the phone app, turn on the backup option as described in Google’s upgrade and transfer instructions.
- Plan ahead: Google says a backup can take up to a few days, and recommends creating it a few days before beginning the transfer or replacement process.
Restore during replacement-watch setup
- Begin setting up the replacement watch with the Pixel Watch app.
- When prompted, choose the backup made from the old watch.
- Complete setup and wait for the restoration to finish.
The restored face is part of the backup result, not a claim that every face change is continuously mirrored between phone and watch. A Photos face may also depend on the photo and app conditions described earlier.

Google recommends keeping the watch software and apps, the phone, and the Pixel Watch app updated. Its app-update guidance connects current software with help for pairing issues and app errors. It does not publish a dedicated checklist specifically for a face that fails to sync during ordinary use.

Diagnose the problem by the workflow
The face changed in the phone app but not on the watch
Check that you tapped Use on watch after editing. If you only opened the editor, the change was not necessarily sent. Then verify that the phone is still paired to the intended watch and reopen Watch faces to apply the selection again.
The face changed on the watch but the phone gallery looks different
The watch can be browsed and edited independently. Google’s instructions do not promise that a watch-side choice will continuously rewrite the phone app’s selection state. Use the phone app to choose the desired face and tap Use on watch when you want the phone workflow to control the result.
The face is missing after moving to a new phone
Confirm that you used the Wear OS 4 transfer process, completed pairing in the Pixel Watch app on the new phone, and allowed time for the post-transfer face synchronization. The official warning is qualitative—“may take some time”—rather than a published duration.
A Photos face is incomplete or unavailable
Update Google Photos on both devices and the Pixel Watch app, then recreate the Photos face with no more than 30 selected images. This workflow has dependencies that a standard face does not.
What Google does—and does not—promise
| Situation | Documented result | Timing or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Applying a face from the phone | Use on watch sends the selected face | No ordinary face-change timing guarantee is stated |
| Selecting on the watch | The watch can switch and edit faces locally | No continuous two-way mirror is promised |
| Watch Transfer to a new phone | Faces can synchronize after transfer | Google says this may take some time; no numeric duration is given |
| Backup restoration to a replacement watch | Apps, data, settings, face and tiles can be restored | Backup may take up to a few days to complete |
| Photos face | Up to 30 photos can be selected in the documented flow | Pixel Watch and Google Photos apps should be up to date on both devices |
The practical rule is to identify which operation you are performing before troubleshooting. A normal face selection needs the explicit apply action; a phone change needs Watch Transfer; and a replacement watch needs a completed backup and restore.
