Pipe bends, valves, and fittings create turbulence when they change a flow’s direction, area, or available passage. That disturbance can separate and mix the moving fluid, dissipating mechanical energy and adding a local loss to the system. The amount depends on component geometry, valve position, and flow conditions—not simply on the presence of a joint.
What changes when water passes through a fitting?
In a straight, developed flow, fluid velocity has a characteristic profile across the pipe. An elbow redirects that flow; a contraction or expansion changes its area; and a valve forces fluid through an internal passage that may be narrow or irregular. Each can distort the velocity profile. The resulting separation, swirling, and mixing dissipate mechanical energy.
A bend can also produce secondary cross-stream motion—often described as paired helical circulation—alongside the main downstream flow. ASHRAE’s 2024 Handbook—Fundamentals describes this motion and notes that it may take up to 100 conduit diameters to die out; the pressure gradient may settle sooner, after about 50 diameters. These are handbook observations, not universal design distances for every pipe and bend. ASHRAE, Chapter 3: Fluid Flow.
Why do some components cause more loss than others?
Bends
A sharp turn, short-radius elbow, and long-radius elbow impose different flow changes. The bend radius and geometry affect how the velocity profile turns and whether flow separates. The fitting’s loss is associated with the disturbance and subsequent dissipation, not merely the fact that two pipe sections meet.

- 【IMPORTANT PRE-PURCHASE NOTES】The ends of the drain pipe are NOT SLIP JOINTS and are not compatible with non-threaded sinks. It can only be used with male threaded sink drain or adapters, and cannot be compatible with pipes without threads.
- 【HOW TO CHOOSE THE LENGTH】The 11"-31.5" length is more suitable for general applications, 7.5"-17.7" length is relatively shorter and only suitable for confined spaces or as part of a connection assembly.
- 【EXPANDABLE & FLEXIBLE P-TRAP】Sink drain pipe adjustable length range from 7.5"(190mm) to 17.7"(450mm); 1-1/2" nut ID is 1.77"(45mm); 1-1/4" nut adapter ID is 1.53"(39mm).
- 【PP MATERIAL】PP is a type of plastic that is thicker than ordinary plastics. Its expandable and flexible properties make it more convenient to use. (NOTE: If you need PVC drain pipes, these may not meet your requirements.)
- 【EASY REMOVAL & INSTALLATION】No need for figuring heights and angles or to cut and glue, p trap drain pipe achieves quick and tight fitting.
Valves
A valve’s internal path restricts or redirects flow. Partly closing a valve can raise its loss substantially compared with the same valve fully open. In ASHRAE’s turbulent-flow reference table, an open gate valve is listed at K = 0.19–0.22, while a gate valve at 25% open is listed at K = 28.8. Those are reference values, not universal constants; actual loss depends on the specific valve and flow conditions. ASHRAE, Chapter 22: Pipe and Tube Design.
Area changes, tees, and other fittings
Contractions and expansions alter fluid speed as the available area changes. Tees add another complication: the loss depends on whether flow continues through the run or turns into the branch. Fitting type alone is not enough to select a reliable loss value; geometry and flow path matter.

How do you calculate pressure loss through a fitting?
When a suitable local-loss coefficient is available, calculate the fitting’s loss using:
Pressure loss: Δp = KρV²/2
Head loss: h = KV²/(2g)

- 【Worthy Pack】- Poly PPSU barb crimp PEX fittings include 10pcs 1/2" PEX elbow fittings, 10pcs 1/2" PEX straight fittings and 10pcs 1/2" PEX tee fittings, which can be used in potable water system or radiant heating system. PEX fitting set is more worthy than brass fittings.
- 【Enhanced Performance】- Poly PPSU barb crimp PEX fittings are made of high-quality PPSU poly material, which is no lead and is more environmentally friendly than brass. It also has better corrosion resistance and performance than brass fittings in RO, chlorinated and low pH water application.
- 【Easy Installation】- PEX fittings are easy to install, you just need to slide the PEX clamp rings over the PEX pipe, insert the fittings, and secure them in place with a clamp tool. The protruding stop on the fitting makes it easy to verify proper installation.
- 【PEX Compatibility】- Plastic PEX fittings can be easily installed without flame, flux, or solder, require no bonding agents, glues, or solvents, they are suitable for stainless steel clamp & copper crimp ring systems and they are NOT suitable for expander fitting system and uponor/wirsbo expander system.
- 【Wide Application】- Poly PPSU barb crimp PEX fittings are suitable for various applications, including domestic water systems, radiant heating systems, retrofit construction, and hot or cold water distribution.
Here, K is the fitting’s loss coefficient, ρ is fluid density, V is the reference velocity, and g is gravitational acceleration. Use the velocity and coefficient convention specified by the data source. State the fluid conditions and coefficient source when reporting a result.
For straight-pipe friction, use the Darcy–Weisbach relationship separately: Δp = f(L/D)(ρV²/2), where f is the appropriate friction factor, L is pipe length, and D is pipe diameter. Add distributed pipe friction and local fitting losses consistently in the system energy balance. Equivalent pipe length is another estimation method, but its assumptions must match the component and flow conditions. The U.S. EPA’s EPANET manual describes local losses in pipe-system calculations: EPANET 2 Users Manual.

A valve’s manufacturer-supplied flow coefficient, such as Cv, is a separate convention for relating flow to pressure drop. It is not the same quantity as the local-loss coefficient K.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs pressure drop the same as irreversible pressure loss?
No. A measured static-pressure decrease across a component can include effects other than irreversible dissipation. For example, fluid can accelerate through a reducer, changing static pressure as velocity changes; elevation changes also affect the pressure balance. The engineering term “loss” refers to dissipated mechanical energy, so account for velocity and elevation effects separately to avoid counting them as fitting loss.

Published coefficients are useful for estimates, but they are not interchangeable or universally valid. ASHRAE’s turbulent-flow table, for example, lists K = 1.3 for a mitered 90° elbow, 0.90 for a short-radius elbow, 0.60 for a long-radius elbow, and 0.2 for a miter elbow with turning vanes. It lists K = 10 for an open globe valve. Treat these as handbook reference values; component geometry and conditions can produce substantial variation. ASHRAE, Chapter 22: Pipe and Tube Design.
For a more meaningful comparison, check that the data match the component and application:
- Fitting geometry, including bend radius and internal shape.
- Valve type and opening position.
- Flow path through a tee or other branched fitting.
- Fluid, Reynolds number, and reference velocity.
- Whether the value comes from a component-specific manufacturer source, a measurement, or a generic table.
- Whether the reported figure is static pressure change or irreversible loss.
NIST’s June 2022 review of fitting-loss measurement methods and data published from 1926 to 2019 found that most of the existing data it reviewed were generally not representative of modern fittings and flow conditions. When accuracy matters, seek component-specific manufacturer data or measurements rather than assuming a generic table captures a modern fitting. NIST Technical Note 2206.
How are fitting losses measured?
In NIST’s 2024 laboratory facility description, static pressure is measured at multiple points using custom piezometer rings, differential-pressure transducers with different ranges, and an automatic pressure-switching system. Pressure measurements along test sections can be used to derive straight-pipe friction factors and fitting pressure-loss coefficients. This describes laboratory measurement equipment and methods, not a consumer-device recommendation. NIST facility description.
