Lanthanum oxide nanoparticles can deprive microbes of phosphate by removing it from their growth medium. In a 2012 laboratory study, the researchers observed a toxic effect only in phosphate-poor conditions—not as a universal effect of the particles. That makes phosphate scavenging a conditional materials-science strategy, not an established treatment for infection.
How phosphate removal can affect microbial growth
Phosphate is a nutrient in the environment microbes need to grow. The approach studied by Gerber, Moser, Luechinger, Stark and Grass was to use lanthanum oxide nanoparticles to scavenge phosphate from microbial growth media. The proposed chain is straightforward: the particles reduce phosphate available in the experimental medium, and microbes in that phosphate-poor setting may be harmed.
The key qualification is the environment. The authors’ abstract says, “Only in phosphate poor environments a toxic effect was observed.” The result therefore does not show that lanthanum oxide nanoparticles inherently kill microbes regardless of nutrient conditions, or that adding them to an arbitrary setting would have the same effect. Read the 2012 study abstract from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Which microbes were tested?
The 2012 study reported results for four organisms: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus carnosus, Penicillium roqueforti and Chlorella vulgaris. These represent bacteria, a fungus and a microalga, but the list is not evidence that the method works against all microbes. The finding remains tied to the organisms and phosphate conditions tested in that laboratory work.

- Contains one (1) API PHOSPHATE TEST KIT 150-Test Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Water Test Kit, including 2 bottles of testing solution, 2 color cards and 1 test tube with cap
- Helps monitor and adjust pH and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and corals
- Reads phosphate levels between 0-10 ppm
- Prevents excess and unsightly algae which can cause fish stress and inhibit the growth of hard corals
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
How later studies changed the material design
Follow-up studies explored different lanthanum oxide forms. Their results support the importance of material structure and experimental context, but they are not a direct head-to-head ranking: the papers used different materials and research aims.
| Material approach | What the cited study reported |
|---|---|
| Free lanthanum oxide nanoparticles | A 2012 study examined phosphate scavenging in microbial growth media and reported a toxic effect only in phosphate-poor environments. Royal Society of Chemistry. |
| Lanthanum oxide hierarchical micro/nanostructures | A 2017 study reported morphology-dependent differences in phosphate removal and bacterial inhibition; the spherical structure was most effective among the structures tested. Royal Society of Chemistry. |
| Lanthanum oxide nanoparticles on polyacrylonitrile nanofibers | A 2016 study investigated phosphate control and bacterial inactivation with the composite, reporting a maximum adsorption capacity of 77.76 mg P per g La for that material. This is not a measurement of the 2012 free nanoparticles. Royal Society of Chemistry. |
The morphology and composite findings indicate that “lanthanum oxide nanoparticles” is not one interchangeable material specification. A result for a prepared structure or immobilized composite should not be transferred to other formulations without testing.

Why calcium phosphate nanoparticles are a different topic
Calcium phosphate nanoparticle research is related to nanoparticle antimicrobial research, but it is not the same phosphate-scavenging approach. A 2020 paper characterized calcium phosphate nanoparticles as bacteriostatic and reported membrane-associated changes. That evidence concerns different chemistry and should not be used as proof that lanthanum oxide works by depleting phosphate. See the PubMed record for the 2020 study.

- NEW! POCKET PACK: Ensure the safety of your family when you go to the waterpark or public swimming pool with 10 individually wrapped test strips that fit in your pocket!
- ✅ DETECTION LEVELS: Phosphate (as PO4): 0, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 ppb (µg/L)
- ✅ MADE IN THE USA FOR MAXIMUM ACCURACY - Test strips made overseas can be inaccurate, hard to read due to bleeding colors, fall apart, or do not even work. Instead choose quality with a leading American manufacturer of high-grade water testing products.
- Established in the cited work: a laboratory investigation of phosphate scavenging by lanthanum oxide nanoparticles, with a reported toxic effect only in phosphate-poor media for the named organisms.
- Not established by these studies: clinical efficacy, safety in humans, regulatory approval, effectiveness against real-world infections, or a ready-to-use antimicrobial product.
For laboratory sourcing, a specialist may encounter the term lanthanum(III) oxide nanopowder. Sigma-Aldrich lists catalog 634271 with a supplier-stated TEM particle size below 100 nm. That listing does not establish equivalence to the particles used in the studies or suitability for antimicrobial use. See the supplier specification.
