Phantom Blade Zero’s director says the game is designed so players can follow its revenge story without prior knowledge of Chinese culture. S-Game’s aim is not to remove wuxia influences, but to make the central human drama accessible while those influences give the world its identity and spiritual core. That is a creative goal described by director Soulframe—not evidence that Western players have already responded positively.
What S-Game says it wants Western players to understand
In an interview with Insider Gaming published October 9, 2026, director Soulframe described the intended balance: players should be able to grasp the main story through familiar emotions and stakes, without needing a guide to Chinese cultural references.

The story is framed around revenge and fellow disciples. Soulframe said, “We don’t want anything culturally heavy, like an obstacle to block your understanding of the world and the story.” He also described the goal as making the story “cool and understandable for everyone, with this revenge and fellow disciple kind of story.”
Why the game still leans on Chinese cultural identity
Accessibility, in Soulframe’s account, does not mean stripping out cultural specificity. He says those elements provide flavor, authenticity and the game’s spiritual core, while the central emotional stakes remain in front. “We don’t let these cultural elements cover the main, human emotions,” he said. “That’s how we play with it. We get this balance.”

- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
Soulframe put the deeper cultural elements at about 5% of the experience and universal experiences and emotions at about 95%. Those figures are his estimates in the interview, not audience research or measured proportions of the game. They are best understood as shorthand for the studio’s stated priorities, not a guarantee about what every player will notice.
How Soulframe explains the team’s perspective
Soulframe said the developers grew up influenced by Western and Japanese entertainment, especially Hollywood and anime. He presented that background as one reason the team is comfortable shaping a Chinese wuxia world around storytelling conventions that may feel familiar to international players. It is his explanation of S-Game’s creative perspective, not a general formula for adapting stories across cultures.

PlayStation describes Phantom Blade Zero as a dark wuxia action RPG made with Unreal Engine 5. Its premise centers on Soul, a swordsman with 66 days left to live who is framed for murdering his master and hunted through the Wulin. Revenge and loyalty give the plot an immediately legible frame; the setting and its cultural influences shape the world in which that story unfolds.

PlayStation and S-Game describe a combat-focused game with more than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 unique Phantom Edges, a category of secondary weapons. PlayStation’s August 2026 State of Play article gives the latter count as 25 secondary weapons. The same article describes side quests that can open story paths, weapon upgrades and reforging, summons, and selectable difficulty modes ranging from Wayfarer to Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. These are developer and platform descriptions, not independently tested findings.
PlayStation’s August article also identifies Donnie Yen as a creative consultant and performer for Mó Yuan, using facial and motion capture. This detail illustrates that the game’s cultural presentation is part of its production identity as well as its setting, but it does not establish how successfully the game will communicate that identity to different audiences.

What is known—and what is not—about Western appeal
The interview establishes S-Game’s stated design intent: make the central revenge story understandable without requiring prior cultural knowledge, while retaining Chinese influences as a core part of the game’s identity. It does not establish that Western players have tested or embraced that approach. Soulframe’s estimates and comparison are his own descriptions, and the available material provides no independent audience study or measured response.
For players deciding whether the approach sounds appealing, the useful distinction is between story access and cultural depth. S-Game says the first should not depend on prior knowledge; it also wants the second to remain meaningful rather than decorative. Whether the released game achieves that balance is a question of player experience, not something the interview alone can settle. Official game information is available at S-Game’s website.
