Researchers have converted postconsumer PET plastic into solid materials that capture carbon dioxide (CO₂), reporting a maximum capacity of 3.4 moles of CO₂ per kilogram. The 2025 result is a promising laboratory demonstration—not a commercially operating capture product or proof of net-negative emissions.
How does PET plastic become a carbon-capture material?
In a peer-reviewed study published in Science Advances on September 5, 2025, Margarita Poderyte and colleagues used aminolysis to transform postconsumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste. The reaction uses 1,2-ethylenediamine and produces a bis-aminoamide called BAETA along with oligomers. The researchers investigated these products as carbon dioxide sorbents.
BAETA is described as a stand-alone organic solid sorbent: it is not a liquid capture solvent and does not require an added solid support. The approach is therefore chemical upcycling of PET into a potential capture material, rather than simply converting plastic into activated carbon. The study in Science Advances is the primary source for the method and measured results.
In an accessible account of the work, coauthor Margarita Poderyte told Chemistry World that the synthesis uses no solvent or catalyst, and is conducted at 60°C for 24 hours. Those details describe the reported synthesis, not a consumer-ready procedure; the reagents are laboratory chemicals. Chemistry World’s report also quotes Poderyte describing the material’s intended versatility across flue-gas and direct-air-capture conditions.

How much CO₂ can the PET-derived material capture?
The authors report a maximum capacity of 3.4 moles of CO₂ per kilogram for the aminolysis products as stand-alone organic solids. This is the study’s reported maximum, not a guaranteed capacity in every operating environment or a commercial system specification.
The study reports selective capture by BAETA in simulated flue-gas mixtures containing 5–20% CO₂ and in ambient air at approximately 400 parts per million CO₂, under humid conditions. These are reported test settings; the findings do not by themselves establish performance in a full-scale industrial installation.

What temperatures and scale did the study demonstrate?
The authors report that the material remains thermally stable above 250°C and that capture was demonstrated at temperatures up to 170°C. These figures describe different properties: thermal stability is not the same as a maximum capture temperature.
For preparation scale, the team demonstrated production using 1 kilogram of untreated consumer PET waste. That is a meaningful kilogram-scale feedstock demonstration, but it is not commercial-scale production or an operating carbon-capture plant.

Does this prove plastic-derived capture can deliver net-negative emissions?
No. The results point to a possible pathway that could connect PET waste management with CO₂ capture, but the study’s prospective framing does not establish net-negative lifecycle emissions. The evidence summarized in the paper does not establish complete process energy and emissions accounting, commercial cost, long-duration field operation, or commercial deployment.
Those questions matter because a capture material’s measured capacity is only one part of a working system. A deployment assessment would also need comparable evidence on regeneration energy, durability over repeated cycles, process emissions, and performance at operating scale. The reported laboratory results are promising, but they do not answer those lifecycle and engineering questions.
