Yes. A French research team reported turning water-hyacinth roots that had absorbed palladium from contaminated water into an ecocatalyst for Suzuki cross-coupling. The work connects recovery of a pollutant metal with catalyst preparation, but it is a research result—not evidence of a commercially deployed process. The report also flags a practical concern: differences in how much palladium plants absorb could make catalyst batches less reproducible.
How can plant roots help promote a Suzuki reaction?
The roots were not used as an ordinary plant extract. Researchers first exposed water-hyacinth roots to palladium-contaminated water, using rhizofiltration to accumulate the metal. They then processed the metal-bearing roots into a palladium-containing catalyst.
In its 17 August 2017 report, Chemistry World described the sequence: filter the contaminated water through the roots for three days, harvest and heat the roots to remove organic material, treat the remaining ash with hydrochloric acid, and filter it. The account says this produced about 200 mg of catalyst per plant; that is the yield reported for this work, not a general expectation for other plants or processes.

What reaction did the ecocatalyst promote?
Suzuki–Miyaura coupling joins an aryl or heteroaryl halide with an organoboron partner to form a carbon–carbon bond. Chemistry World reported that the ecocatalyst promoted couplings of several heteroaryl compounds without added ligands or additives in the cases described. It also said some cases were more active than traditional catalysts, but did not establish a universal performance ranking.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

The related FR3064496A1 patent describes a general laboratory example using 1.25 mmol of aryl halide, 1.3 mmol of phenylboronic acid, 1.5 mmol of potassium carbonate, and 0.1 mol% palladium-based Eco-Pd in 2.5 mL of solvent. The mixture is held under argon at 95 °C for two hours; the patent describes product extraction and GC/MS measurement of conversion.
Among its examples, the patent reports 92% conversion for water-hyacinth-root powder in glycerol. That is a result for a stated experimental example, not a promised yield for different substrates, plant material, solvents, or conditions. The patent also describes other plant-derived, metal-accumulating materials and cross-coupling uses; its claims and examples document what is proposed and tested in that document, not commercial adoption.

What are the promise and the limitation?
The approach offers a way to recover palladium accumulated from contaminated water and use it in a chemical reaction. Claude Grison, who led the team, told Chemistry World: “We show that ecological recycling can be considered as a “resource” of metal catalysts.” She also said: “The plant is easily available and abundant, the process is simple and easy to scale up.” Those comments express the team’s view; they do not amount to a lifecycle assessment or a controlled environmental comparison.
Nicholas Leadbeater, identified in the report as a green-chemistry researcher at the University of Connecticut, commented: “Using the roots of a plant as the catalyst to perform Suzuki couplings in glycerol certainly checks a number of “green” boxes.” He also raised a reproducibility concern: plants may accumulate different quantities of metal depending on where they grow. Variation in palladium uptake could make it harder to prepare batches with consistent catalyst composition and performance.

Was the process scaled up or commercialized?
Chemistry World reported in 2017 that the team was working toward a larger-scale pilot and was interested in polluted quarry and industrial effluents. That describes an ambition at the time of publication; it does not establish that the pilot later took place or that the catalyst is now used commercially. The available report and patent do not establish commercial-scale deployment.
The underlying paper is identified in the Chemistry World article as G. Clavé et al., Green Chemistry (2017), DOI 10.1039/c7gc01672g. The performance details above are attributed to the news report and patent rather than presented as a direct assessment of the paper.
