Paleontologists identify a proposed fossil species by comparing its anatomy with previously described species and deciding whether a consistent set of preserved features distinguishes it. They also account for growth, natural variation, damage, deformation and preservation. Rock age and layer help establish context, but a different horizon alone does not prove that a fossil is a new species.
What makes a fossil different enough to be a new species?
The key question is whether the fossil has diagnostic features: anatomical traits, or a combination of traits, that distinguish it from the closest known species. An unusual appearance is a starting point for investigation, not proof. Researchers compare corresponding parts of the fossil with relevant descriptions and specimens, ideally including the holotypes—the name-bearing specimens—of species that might be confused with it.
A diagnosis states the features that distinguish the proposed species. A fuller description records its anatomy and other relevant details so that other researchers can assess the comparison. The distinction should be repeatable and based on preserved evidence, rather than on a difference that could be explained by an incomplete or altered specimen.

- Document the fossil and its context. Record which parts are preserved, their condition and measurements, and the locality and geological horizon. For fossil type material, the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) recommends recording geological age and stratigraphic position when known, ideally with position relative to a reference plane where possible. Read the ICZN Code.
- Compare relevant anatomy. Examine corresponding features against known species, giving particular attention to the closest alternatives and their name-bearing specimens. The point is to determine whether the candidate differs in diagnostic ways, not merely whether any difference can be found.
- Test other explanations for the difference. Consider whether growth stage, ordinary variation, breakage, deformation, preservation or missing anatomy could account for the observed traits. A feature that appears distinctive in one damaged or juvenile specimen may not separate species once those possibilities are considered.
- Describe the distinction and its limits. A formal account commonly includes a diagnosis, a fuller description, illustrations of characteristic features, type-material information, locality and stratigraphic occurrence, and discussion of preservation and variation. These details let others inspect the reasoning.
- Anchor the name to type material. A published species-group name must be tied to designated name-bearing material under applicable nomenclatural rules. For names published after 1999, the ICZN requires explicit fixation of a holotype or syntypes. The Code also calls for collection and location information for extant type specimens; for fossil types, it recommends documenting specimen details, collection number, locality, geological age and stratigraphic position when available. See the Code’s provisions and recommendations.
How much fossil material is enough?
There is no universal minimum number of bones or specimens. Adequacy depends on how much material is preserved, how informative it is, and how subtle the proposed differences are. One specimen can sometimes show a clear distinction. In a well-studied group where related species differ only subtly, researchers may need more material to determine whether the traits fall within normal or developmental variation.

Completeness matters because a missing or poorly preserved feature may prevent a direct comparison. Researchers should make clear which parts support the diagnosis and what the sample cannot establish; a formal species proposal is an evidence-based classification, not a claim that every aspect of the animal is known.
What the rock layer can—and cannot—show
Geological age and stratigraphic position establish where a fossil fits in the sequence of rock and fossil occurrences. They can help researchers compare specimens from different horizons and document the provenance of the type. That context informs an anatomical comparison, but age or layer alone does not establish a new species: fossils from different horizons may belong to the same species, while fossils from the same horizon may represent different species.

Why the type specimen matters
A type specimen is the objective reference that anchors a zoological species-group name. A holotype is one specimen fixed as the name-bearer; syntypes are multiple specimens that collectively serve that role when applicable. A type need not be the most complete fossil or represent every variation within the species. Its purpose is to give later researchers a specific reference for deciding whether newly found material belongs to the named species.
If an old type is lost and the loss makes a species difficult to identify, the Code allows for a neotype to be selected under its provisions. The Natural History Museum describes how the more complete London Archaeopteryx was selected in 2011 as the neotype for Archaeopteryx lithographica, illustrating how the condition or ambiguity of name-bearing material can affect later identification. What to check when species interpretations conflict
When scientists disagree about whether fossils belong to one species or more, compare the evidence rather than treating any single factor as decisive:
- Anatomical characters: Which features differ, and do they form a diagnostic distinction?
- Variation and development: Could age, individual variation or preservation explain the differences?
- Type comparison: Have researchers compared the fossils with the relevant name-bearing types?
- Comparability: Are the specimens complete and preserved well enough for the same features to be assessed?
- Geological context: Do age and stratigraphic position support or complicate the proposed grouping?
These are useful comparison questions, not a numerical scoring system. The conclusion rests on how well the anatomical evidence distinguishes the candidate after its limits and context have been considered.

How a formal species name becomes inspectable
A published account makes the proposed distinction available for scrutiny by naming the type material and its repository, presenting the diagnosis and description, illustrating characteristic features, and documenting locality and occurrence. The ICZN’s Recommendation 73A says: “An author who establishes a new nominal species-group taxon should designate its holotype in a way that will facilitate its subsequent recognition.” This recommendation concerns making the name-bearing specimen recognizable; it is not, by itself, the scientific test for deciding whether the fossil represents a distinct species.
