In 1998, an estimated 12,000 metric tonnes of orange peels and pulp were spread across 3 hectares of degraded cattle pasture in Costa Rica’s Área de Conservación Guanacaste. Sixteen years later, researchers found substantially more woody plant species, greater tree species evenness, and 176% more aboveground woody biomass in the treated area than in an adjacent untreated plot. These are results from one site-specific field comparison—not a universal recipe for restoring forests.
What happened at the Costa Rican site?
The treated land was former cattle pasture in northwestern Costa Rica. Its rocky, compacted, nutrient-poor soils reflected a history of overgrazing and fire-based land management. In 1998, processed orange peels and pulp from an industrial operation were deposited on a 3-hectare portion of the site. The study estimates the amount at 12,000 Mg, or 12,000 metric tonnes.
The intervention was connected to an agricultural-waste disposal service contract. Princeton University’s 2017 account says the arrangement involved orange juice company Del Oro and a forest-land donation component; it ended after a rival company sued. The account does not establish an ongoing program. Princeton University’s project history provides this background.
What did researchers find 16 years later?
Treuer and colleagues compared the orange-waste plot with an adjacent untreated control. They reported differences in woody vegetation, aboveground woody biomass, canopy closure, and soil nutrients. The biodiversity-related findings refer to two distinct measures:
#1 Best Overall
- FOR USE ON: Use Citrus-tone organic fertilizer for all citrus trees, including lemon, lime, orange, Meyer Lemon Trees as well as for avocado & nut trees
- CONTAINS: Citrus-tone is a rich blend of the finest natural & organic ingredients enhanced with our exclusive Bio-tone formula; 5-2-6 Fertilizer analysis with 5% Calcium. Contains no sludges or fillers.
- WHEN / HOW TO USE: Best to use Citrus-tone fertilizer late winter pre-bloom, spring post bloom and Fall. Apply to the soil around the drip line of the tree and then water thoroughly. Citrus-tone is ready to use and requires no mixing
- FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: Citrus-tone is approved for organic gardening; It is a registered Organic Input Material meaning it meets all requirements for organic production
- MADE IN THE USA: Product of the Espoma Company. The leader in natural organics since 1929
- Woody plant species richness was threefold higher in the treated plot than in the control.
- Tree species evenness, measured with the Shannon Index, was threefold higher in the treated plot than in the control. Evenness describes how species are represented relative to one another; it is not the same measure as species richness.
- Aboveground woody biomass was 176% higher in the treated plot than in the adjacent control.
- Canopy closure was significantly greater in the treated area, based on hemispheric photography.
- Soil samples taken two and 16 years after application showed elevated macronutrients and important micronutrients in the orange-waste area.
The 176% figure is a comparison of aboveground woody biomass, not a direct measurement of carbon captured or stored. The authors discuss a carbon-sequestration opportunity, but the reported biomass result should not be relabeled as a carbon-sequestration measurement. The findings are from the 2018 study in Restoration Ecology: “Low-cost agricultural waste accelerates tropical forest regeneration.”
What the comparison can—and cannot—show
This was a field comparison of one treated plot and one adjacent control at a particular Costa Rican site. It documents how those areas differed when researchers surveyed them; it does not establish that orange waste alone caused every difference. Nor does it show that the same result will follow under different soils, climates, land-use histories, waste inputs, or management conditions.

- Balanced Organic Nutrition – Supplies a 6‑3‑3 NPK ratio along with calcium, sulfur, iron, and zinc to foster healthy foliage, flowering, and fruit.
- Crafted from Premium Natural Sources – Includes feather meal, fish bone meal, alfalfa meal, langbeinite, basalt, potassium sulfate, zinc sulfate, kelp, and humic acids derived from leonardite for enhanced nutrient uptake.
- OMRI-Listed for Organic Use – Certified for organic gardening, ensuring no synthetic additives—a great match for organic or sustainable gardens.
- Mini Box, Maximum Flexibility – Compact 1 lb packaging is ideal for small-scale use, raised beds, containers, or trial applications before committing to larger sizes.
- Easy Application Schedule – Apply 3–4 times a year—late winter, late spring, and early fall—by spreading around the drip line or mixing in fresh soil at planting or repotting.
For restoration practitioners, the case is evidence worth considering, not a validated general-purpose treatment protocol. Applying industrial quantities of citrus-processing waste is also fundamentally different from adding household orange peels to a garden or compost bin. The study does not establish that a consumer-scale application reproduces the field intervention.

What would matter in another restoration project?
Anyone evaluating an agricultural-waste approach elsewhere would need to consider the site and the intervention together, rather than copy the Costa Rican quantity or outcome. Relevant questions include:
Rank #3
- Package contains 4 Pounds organic fruit and citrus fertilizer grains and is produced to avoid wasteful runoff, mess, hazards and smells
- Plant fertilizer is formulated with a 3-5-5 NPK to provide fruit and citrus plants the nutrients they need for a high yield and vibrant foliage
- Jobe's organic fertilizer contains no synthetic chemicals and are OMRI listed for organic gardening by the USDA
- Application is simple and should be done every 4-8 weeks or as needed during the growing season
- Jobe's organic fertilizer is easily measured to provide the right amount of nutrients for fruit and citrus plants without risk of over fertilizing
- Site conditions: How do the soil, climate, degradation, and prior land use compare with the Costa Rican pasture?
- Waste supply: What material is available, in what composition and volume, and can it be applied consistently?
- Management: Are grazing, fire, and other factors controlled or documented so their effects can be distinguished?
- Monitoring: Is there a suitable control and a plan to measure vegetation, biomass, canopy, and soil changes over time?
The Costa Rican study does not provide a universal protocol or prove that its outcome transfers to projects with different answers to these questions.
