In a 2004 experiment, researchers used a focused laser beam to trap individual water and decane aerosol droplets, then used cavity-enhanced Raman scattering to track changes in their size. The method let them observe growth and evaporation in droplets just 4–14 μm across, with nanometre precision in the reported size measurements.
Why study one aerosol droplet at a time?
Measurements of an aerosol cloud combine signals from many particles. Because those particles can differ in size and composition, an ensemble measurement can average away what is happening to any one of them. Isolating a single droplet offers a way to follow its physical and chemical changes, including processes at the gas–liquid interface.
That was the rationale behind the 2004 work by Rebecca J. Hopkins, Laura Mitchem, Andrew D. Ward and Jonathan P. Reid. Their experiment paired an optical trap, which held one droplet in place, with a sensitive optical measurement of its size.

Optical tweezers as a single-particle trap
An optical tweezer uses a tightly focused laser beam to exert forces on a microscopic particle. In this study, a single-beam gradient-force trap held individual aerosol droplets so researchers could observe them without relying on a moving or mixed population.

The droplets and operating conditions
Hopkins and colleagues trapped water and decane droplets with diameters of 4–14 μm. The study reported that trapping powers were below 10 mW and that droplets could be controlled for hours. These figures describe the reported experiment, not a general specification for all optical-tweezer setups.
How cavity-enhanced Raman scattering tracked size
Holding a droplet steady was only part of the challenge: its size could change as it absorbed or lost material. The researchers used cavity-enhanced Raman scattering (CERS) to monitor the evolution of an individual droplet’s size. The study reported nanometre precision, allowing the team to observe both growth and evaporation.

The Chemistry World report characterized the measurement accuracy as unprecedented. That wording describes the report’s characterization of the 2004 result; it should not be read as a claim about the current state of the art.

The researchers also demonstrated the potential to use two traps to manipulate two droplets and investigate their coagulation. The Chemistry World account discussed bringing droplets together to coalesce as a possible way to mix chemicals in very small volumes.

That is a prospective application, not evidence that the experiment produced a broadly available microfluidic tool. The demonstrated work supports controlled single-droplet study and the potential for paired-droplet manipulation; the proposed tiny-volume mixing use goes beyond those results.

- Demonstrated: trapping individual water and decane aerosol droplets in the reported size range, and observing single-droplet size changes using CERS.
- Reported capability: control over hours at trapping powers below 10 mW, with nanometre precision in size evolution measurements.
- Potential direction: manipulating two droplets to study coagulation and, as proposed in the report, possibly mix chemicals in tiny volumes.
The report and underlying study are historical evidence from 2004. They establish what that team demonstrated, but do not establish how the method developed afterward or what capabilities define today’s state of the art.
