Researchers at Sichuan University reported organic molecules that change color in response to deuterium oxide (D2O), commonly called heavy water. The optical readout may make detection simpler than some instrument-based approaches, but the 2019 report does not establish a validated consumer test or a commercially available sensor kit.
How the optical sensor detects heavy water
The reported sensors are organic chromophores—molecules that absorb light and produce color. Their response relies on a subtle acidity difference between ordinary water and heavy water. In the proposed mechanism, a hydroxyl group on the sensor molecule loses a proton in heavy water, forming an anionic species with a different optical response.
Depending on the molecule, that response can be a color change visible under ordinary light or one that requires ultraviolet illumination. The researchers characterized multiple chromophores and their spectral properties at different percentages of heavy water, according to Chemistry World’s 2019 report.

What the reported sensitivity does—and does not—show
Alice Soldà, a functional-imaging techniques expert at the Technical University of Munich who was not involved in the work, described the sensitivity as remarkable and said the probes could detect parts per million of heavy water. The report gives no exact ppm value, so it does not support a precise detection-limit claim.
#1 Best Overall
- Great for low maintenance D.O. measuring work
- Remain accuracy in low oxygen range and won’t be affected by acid gases
- No polarization time and no probe maintenance work
- Big LCD with D.O. & Temperature display
- Selectable % and mg/L unit for D.O. Value
Nor does the accessible report provide enough procedural detail to reproduce the assay or establish performance in a particular sample matrix. A color response in the reported research should not be treated as proof that the method has been validated for field testing, consumer use, or routine quality control.
Why the researchers investigated D2O purity
The work was motivated by variation in the purity of different batches of deuterium oxide used as a solvent for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Chemistry World reports that Sichuan University researchers Y. Luo and colleagues published the study in Angewandte Chemie International Edition in 2019 (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201900806), with Xujun Zheng and Zhiyun Lu identified as team leaders.

- 2PCS High Sensibility Optical Water Liquid Level Sensor
- Type B built-in resistor 5VDC,Analog output,XH2.54 connector

- Installation is simple and quick through the water tank top, bottom or side
- Wide Applications: Dishwasher, Water Dispenser, Water Heater, Humidifier and so on
The report frames existing approaches as involving difficult-to-operate instruments and specialized technicians, or sensors based on scarce elements such as indium, gallium, or lanthanoids. That is contextual comparison, not enough information to rank this optical approach against every established analytical method: comparable test conditions, exact limits, and validation results are not provided in the accessible account.
Potential uses and development status
The immediate use discussed was checking heavy-water purity for NMR work. The report also proposed possible applications in photoacoustic imaging, where heavy water may serve as a contrast, and quality control at heavy-water plants. These are potential uses described in 2019, not evidence of current deployment.

- The liquid level switch can be installed upside, downside, sideways and diagonally, while the existing float type liquid level switch can only be installed upside down.
- The liquid level control accuracy of this liquid level switch is high, within ±0.5mm, while the existing float type liquid level switch has an accuracy of ±3.0mm or even higher.
- There is no friction and mechanical moving parts, so the reliability is high. However, the existing float type liquid level switch floats are easily stuck and cause defects
- Application:Humidifiers, air-conditioning fans, steam and other electrical products that require water level control and protection
- Photoelectric level switch
The report says some sensor solutions are limited to small-scale laboratory synthesis. It identifies a probe based on 5-aminofluorescein as relatively inexpensive and purchasable. That refers to a chemical basis for a probe; it does not establish that a complete, ready-to-use heavy-water test is available.

For anyone evaluating a method to determine D2O purity, the important question is not just whether a sample changes color. A useful comparison should establish:

- Equipped with state-of-the-art Optical DO sensor: measures dissolved oxygen level in a reliable and effortless manner
- Minimal maintenance required. No need for solution refill or frequent membrane change.
- Easy auto. Calibration for saturated air and zero-oxygen
- IP67 waterproof and dust-proof structure, ideal to be used in harsh environments
- Comes with a complete meter kit, including the DO meter, 10 ft optical probe, calibration cap, and a rugged carrying case
- The detection limit under stated test conditions, rather than a qualitative sensitivity claim.
- Whether the readout is visible in ordinary light or requires UV illumination or other equipment.
- Validation in the intended sample matrix and across the relevant range of heavy-water concentrations.
- Reproducibility and whether the assay requires specialized preparation, instruments, or trained operators.
The 2019 report supports interest in a potentially simple optical readout, but does not supply enough comparable performance data to answer those practical questions for a specific use.
