For 2026 games against Big Ten opponents, Ohio State follows the conference’s four-report availability schedule. Those reports show whether a player is expected to be available for that game; they do not disclose a diagnosis or guarantee a role or number of snaps. Concussion-like symptoms follow a separate medical process under Ohio State’s published policy, including removal for evaluation and physician clearance before return.
Where to find Ohio State’s availability report
For 2026 Big Ten conference games, the conference says availability reports will be published on BigTen.org. Its August 28, 2026 announcement sets deadlines relative to kickoff, using local conference time:

How to read the status labels
The labels differ depending on when the report is issued. Midweek reports use Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out, and Out (1st Half). The game-day report uses Game Time Decision, Out, and Out (1st Half). Under the Big Ten’s 2026 process, a player omitted from a report is considered available.

Read a designation as an availability forecast for that particular game and point in the week. It is not a medical diagnosis, a guarantee that a player will take the field, or a prediction of playing time. The categories do not explain why a player is unavailable.
Availability reporting is not medical clearance
The Big Ten report is a public, game-specific status system. Ohio State’s concussion policy addresses a different question: how a student-athlete with possible concussion symptoms is evaluated and, if appropriate, returned to participation. The policy does not establish the school’s full internal clearance process for every type of injury.
| What is being decided | Availability report | Concussion care |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Expected availability for a particular game | Evaluation and safe return to athletic activity after concussion-like symptoms |
| Timing | Three-, two-, and one-day reports plus a game-day report for 2026 Big Ten conference games | Begins with symptom-based removal and evaluation; return requires progression through specified stages |
| Information communicated | A status category, not a diagnosis | Clinical evaluation and clearance process under Ohio State’s policy |
| Authority | Conference reporting framework | Team physician or physician’s designee has final authority to clear return to athletic activity |
Ohio State’s concussion evaluation and return process
Ohio State’s published concussion policy says a student-athlete showing concussion-like symptoms must be removed from practice or competition for evaluation by athletic training or physician staff. If a concussion is confirmed, the athlete may not return to participation on the same calendar day.

Return is supervised and stepwise. The policy describes this progression:
- Light aerobic exercise without resistance training.
- Sport-specific activity without head impact.
- Non-contact practice with progressive resistance training.
- Unrestricted training.
- Return to competition.
The team physician or physician’s designee has final authority to clear a return to athletic activity. This pathway is specific to concussion management; it should not be treated as the return-to-play rule for every injury. The NCAA concussion safety page provides broader context: schools in all three NCAA divisions must maintain an updated concussion safety protocol and comply with association-wide interassociation recommendations. The NCAA page also says checklist, template, and fact-sheet modifications were approved in June 2026.

Policy discussion in 2019
At an August 27, 2019 press conference, head coach Ryan Day said the program had discussed its injury policy with administration and medical staff before deciding how to proceed. The exchange raised a possible gamesmanship element, but Day did not spell out each group’s authority or provide a complete decision tree. This is evidence of that discussion in 2019, not proof of every current internal step.

Availability-report detail in 2020
On March 2, 2020, Day said Ohio State tried to avoid giving long-term or season-ending details in its availability report and expected listed players back in September. That was a description of public communication at that time, not a current forecast or a promise that the program never provides more detail.
Adjusting the lineup in 2024
In an official November 20, 2024 team media report, Day said the team would move Carson to center and Austin to left guard following Seth’s injury. Offensive lineman Donovan Jackson said younger players were being prepared to enter a game at any time. These comments show a specific example of position adjustments and next-player preparation; they do not establish a universal written protocol for every injury.
Quick Recap
What the public information can—and cannot—tell you
- A status tells you how the player is categorized for that game and report, not what injury or diagnosis the player has.
- “Available” means listed as available under the conference process; it does not say how much the player will play.
- The 2026 Big Ten schedule and labels apply to conference-opponent games, not automatically to nonconference games.
- Ohio State’s published concussion policy explains the symptom response and return progression for concussion cases, not its complete handling of all other injuries.
- Historical coach and player comments can illustrate past communication and lineup preparation, but should not be treated as a current, exhaustive policy.
