OFDM helps wireless networks use radio spectrum efficiently and cope with signal reflections by sending data in parallel across many closely spaced subcarriers. Wi-Fi 6 builds on that foundation with OFDMA, which can schedule portions of a channel for multiple devices; Wi-Fi 7 extends the OFDM-based family toward still higher throughput. Neither generation’s real-world speed comes from OFDM alone.

What OFDM does

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a multicarrier modulation method. Rather than transmit one high-rate stream on a single carrier, a system divides a channel into many closely spaced subcarriers and sends lower-rate symbols across them in parallel.

The subcarriers are mathematically orthogonal: when the signal is properly synchronized, their spectra can overlap without interfering with one another. Practical OFDM systems also use a cyclic prefix, or guard interval, to help handle delayed copies of a signal arriving by different paths. This makes much of the channel’s time dispersion easier to correct with frequency-domain equalization.

These properties make OFDM efficient and comparatively robust in radio environments affected by reflections and frequency-selective fading. OFDM is also used beyond Wi-Fi: IEEE identifies OFDM or its multi-user extension in 802.11a/g/n/ac/ax, LTE downlink, 5G New Radio in both directions, DSL, and power-line communications. LTE uses a single-carrier variant on the uplink. IEEE Technology Navigator’s OFDM overview

How OFDM helps wireless networks go faster

It sends data in parallel

Dividing transmission across subcarriers allows a system to carry symbols concurrently. The lower symbol rate on each individual subcarrier helps make multipath effects manageable, while the collection of subcarriers uses the available channel efficiently.

It adapts to radio conditions

Subcarriers can use different modulation and coding levels. A system can transmit more efficiently on frequencies with better conditions and use more robust settings where the signal is weaker or more affected by interference.

It supports scheduling and wide channels

Because a channel is organized into subcarriers, a system can allocate groups of them to users or traffic with different needs. OFDM also provides a convenient physical-layer foundation for multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) spatial streams and the wider channels used by modern Wi-Fi.

OFDM is an enabling technology, not a guarantee of a particular speed. Peak Wi-Fi rates also depend on channel bandwidth, constellation density (how many bits a modulation symbol carries), spatial-stream count, and overhead per symbol. OFDM and OFDMA: what Wi-Fi 6 adds

OFDM describes the multicarrier transmission method. OFDMA—orthogonal frequency-division multiple access—is its multi-user extension: it lets a Wi-Fi access point divide the channel into smaller resource units and schedule transmissions for multiple devices. Instead of each device needing to use the whole channel in turn, the access point can assign different portions of it according to traffic and scheduling needs.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) adds OFDMA to the established OFDM-based Wi-Fi approach. Cisco characterizes the standard as designed for dense environments, where more efficient channel use can reduce overhead and latency. The benefit is most relevant when many devices are active; OFDMA does not automatically make every single-device transfer faster, and actual performance depends on the network and its traffic.

How OFDM compares with cellular networks

OFDM is not specific to Wi-Fi. LTE uses OFDM on the downlink and a single-carrier variant on the uplink; 5G New Radio extends OFDM to both directions. Germany’s Federal Network Agency describes LTE/LTE-A as based on OFDM for flexibility and efficiency. Its current LTE technology page lists minimum rates of 100 Mbit/s downlink and 50 Mbit/s uplink, and end-to-end latency below 10 ms; these are the agency’s stated LTE technology figures, not a guarantee for an individual connection. What to compare when choosing a Wi-Fi router

Use the router and client device specifications together: a router’s advertised capability is useful only when the connected devices and network conditions can take advantage of it. Compare:

  • Channel width: Wider channels can support higher peak rates, but the usable bandwidth and local radio conditions matter.
  • Spatial streams: Check the number supported by both the router and client devices; more streams can raise capacity when both ends support them.
  • Modulation: Higher constellation density can carry more bits per symbol when signal quality allows it.
  • OFDMA behavior: Consider whether multi-user scheduling suits a network with many active devices, rather than assuming it improves every transfer.
  • Latency under load: Dense networks can behave differently from a quiet, single-client speed test.
  • Coverage and interference: Placement, obstacles, competing networks, and the operating band affect the signal a device actually receives.
  • Band support and compatibility: Check which bands the router and clients support and whether the new router will work with existing 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz devices.

The practical takeaway

OFDM makes efficient wireless transmission possible by splitting data across orthogonal subcarriers and making multipath easier to manage. Wi-Fi 6’s OFDMA adds flexible multi-user scheduling, while Wi-Fi 7 advances the same broad OFDM-based WLAN family. To choose between routers, compare supported bandwidth, streams, modulation, scheduling, coverage, bands, and device compatibility—not the generation label or peak rate alone.
