NVIDIA’s GR00T-Dreams is a reference workflow for generating synthetic robot-training trajectories: it uses a robot image and a language instruction to create candidate task videos, then turns selected videos into motion data for training robot policies. A video is only a proposed scenario—not evidence that a robot can safely perform the task.
How GR00T-Dreams turns an image into robot training data
The workflow connects visual generation to robot learning in several stages. NVIDIA’s technical article describes it as a way to use a small amount of robot-specific demonstration data to help generate trajectories for new behaviors and environments.
- Collect a small set of robot demonstrations. Record teleoperated trajectories of a particular robot performing a task in an environment. NVIDIA says these demonstrations are used to post-train Cosmos Predict so the generation process reflects that robot’s movement capabilities and functional constraints.
- Generate candidate scenarios. Give the adapted model an initial image and a text instruction. Cosmos Predict generates 2D videos showing possible task situations or future states—for example, opening or closing something, arranging objects, cleaning, or sorting.
- Filter the generated videos. NVIDIA describes Cosmos Reason as screening outputs for useful scenarios. Filtering is not a guarantee that every remaining video is physically consistent, feasible for a particular robot, or safe to execute.
- Extract robot motion. An inverse-dynamics model derives 3D neural trajectories from selected 2D video. This conversion matters: the video depicts a possible scene, while the trajectory is structured motion data intended for robot-policy training.
- Train and validate a policy. Use the trajectories to train visuomotor policies for new behaviors or environments, then validate the resulting policy. The workflow is intended to reduce reliance on manually collected demonstrations; it does not remove the need to test a policy on the robot.
NVIDIA’s May 19, 2025 COMPUTEX announcement summarized the idea as generating videos of a robot performing new tasks in new environments from a single image, then extracting action tokens to teach those tasks. The technical article provides the fuller sequence above.
GR00T-Dreams vs. GR00T-Mimic
NVIDIA presents the two blueprints as serving different data needs. Dreams is aimed at generating scenarios for new tasks and environments; Mimic is aimed at expanding demonstrations for tasks that are already known.

| Reader’s question | GR00T-Dreams | GR00T-Mimic |
|---|---|---|
| What data-generation role does NVIDIA describe? | Generate scenarios for new tasks and environments with Cosmos Predict. | Augment existing demonstrations for known tasks using Omniverse and Cosmos Transfer. |
| Short version | Explore additional behaviors and settings. | Scale up examples of a demonstrated skill. |
| What should not be assumed? | A generated video still has to be converted into robot motion data, and the resulting policy still needs validation. | More demonstration variants do not, by themselves, establish broader generalization. |
“Specialist proficiency versus broader generalization” is a useful shorthand for NVIDIA’s design intent, not a proven outcome for every robot. The NVIDIA descriptions do not provide an independent head-to-head benchmark of Dreams and Mimic for quality, cost, or task success.

| 36 hours, compared with nearly three months | Generating synthetic training data for GR00T N1.5 with GR00T-Dreams, compared with manual human data collection. | NVIDIA’s 2025 account of its N1.5 development process; not a general time-saving guarantee. |
| 24,000 simulated teleoperation trajectories, alongside thousands of additional trajectories | A Physical AI Dataset update described in NVIDIA’s technical article. | NVIDIA, 2025. The 24,000 figure is for simulated teleoperation trajectories, not real-robot deployments. |
| 780,000 trajectories in 11 hours; equivalent, in NVIDIA’s framing, to 6,500 hours or nine continuous months of human demonstration | An earlier synthetic-manipulation blueprint, not GR00T-Dreams or GR00T N1.5. | NVIDIA’s March 2025 release. NVIDIA also reported that combining synthetic and real data improved GR00T N1 performance by 40% compared with real data alone. |
Keep the March 2025 result separate from the Dreams/N1.5 development comparison: they concern different work. The sources cited here report NVIDIA’s claims; they do not establish an independent performance result for GR00T-Dreams.

- It is a blueprint or reference workflow. GR00T-Dreams describes software, models, and data stages for making synthetic robot-training trajectories; it is not a physical robot or a stand-alone robot foundation model.
- Generated video is not a learned skill. A plausible-looking clip is a candidate scenario. The workflow must extract trajectories, train a policy, and validate the resulting behavior.
- It is not presented as a replacement for all real demonstrations. NVIDIA’s described process begins with limited robot-specific demonstrations, which help adapt generation to the robot’s capabilities.
- Hardware mentions are not minimum requirements. NVIDIA’s May 2025 announcement named RTX PRO workstations and servers for simulation and training, GB200 systems and cloud compute for larger workloads, and Jetson Thor for on-robot inference. Those are possible infrastructure choices, not stated prerequisites for using the blueprint.
NVIDIA’s technical article names the SO-100 manipulator as one supported embodiment. That identifies a robot type in the workflow; it does not validate any particular kit, seller, contents, or current availability.

How the product context has changed since launch
NVIDIA announced GR00T-Dreams alongside GR00T N1.5 at COMPUTEX on May 19, 2025, describing Dreams as a Cosmos-based way to create new synthetic data and Mimic as a way to augment existing data. NVIDIA also said it used Dreams while developing N1.5.
In a later announcement dated January 5, 2026, NVIDIA introduced Cosmos Transfer 2.5, Cosmos Predict 2.5, Cosmos Reason 2, Isaac GR00T N1.6, Isaac Lab-Arena, and OSMO. This update is relevant to the broader platform context, but it does not establish that every newer component replaces or is compatible with each stage of the original Dreams workflow.

The core idea remains a data-generation pipeline: model-generated visual scenarios become useful for policy training only after selection and conversion into robot-motion trajectories. NVIDIA’s reported development figures show how it says the workflow was used in one project; they are not an independent guarantee of the outcome another robotics team will achieve.
