NVIDIA’s rise to the top of the public-company value rankings was powered by investor demand for a company supplying the computing infrastructure behind artificial intelligence. Its fast-growing Data Center business provides the clearest operating evidence for that story. The milestone is a dated market-capitalization snapshot—not a measure of revenue or profit, and not a permanent ranking.

What “most valuable public company” means

A company’s market capitalization is its share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. Because share prices move during trading, the ranking can change from day to day. Market capitalization reflects what investors value the company’s equity at a particular moment; it is not the same as sales, earnings, or cash on hand.

On November 20, 2024, NVIDIA’s market value was $3.579 trillion at the close, according to the Associated Press. NVIDIA had regained the No. 1 position from Apple earlier that week. The figure describes that closing valuation, not a current ranking.

Why AI demand lifted NVIDIA

Training and running advanced AI models require substantial computing capacity, and NVIDIA sells processors, systems, and networking products used in data centers. The company’s fiscal second quarter of 2025, which ended July 28, 2024, showed how strongly its business was growing during the period surrounding its 2024 market-value milestone.

Fiscal Q2 2025 result Reported figure Year-over-year change
Total revenue $30.0 billion Up 122%
Data Center revenue $26.3 billion Up 154%

These are NVIDIA’s figures for its fiscal quarter, not the calendar quarter. The company attributed the growth to demand for data-center compute and networking for accelerated computing and AI solutions. At the time, CEO Jensen Huang said, “NVIDIA achieved record revenues as global data centers are in full throttle to modernize the entire computing stack with accelerated computing and generative AI.” That was Huang’s explanation of the demand environment in the company’s August 28, 2024 results release, rather than independent market analysis. NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2025 results detail the figures and statement.

AI-linked growth continued in later results

The growth story extended beyond the 2024 milestone. NVIDIA reported $96.2 billion in total revenue and $89.0 billion in Data Center revenue for fiscal Q2 2027, up 106% and 117% year over year, respectively. The company said Data Center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions drove revenue growth. These company-reported results show continued expansion in that business; they do not establish what investors expected or whether NVIDIA’s shares were fairly valued. The milestone moved again—and remains time-sensitive

Market value continued to rise after 2024. NVIDIA briefly exceeded $4 trillion in intraday trading on July 9, 2025, becoming the first public company to reach that threshold, but its shares finished the day below it, according to the Associated Press. That intraday event and the November 2024 closing figure measure different moments. Neither should be presented as a timeless or necessarily current ranking.

What could constrain the growth

NVIDIA’s filings describe risks that could affect its ability to meet demand or sustain growth. In its fiscal Q2 2027 SEC filing, the company identified complex production and supply requirements, customer delays tied to data-center infrastructure or capital limitations, limited availability of land and power, and slower adoption than anticipated. These are risks disclosed by NVIDIA, not predictions that any particular constraint will occur. The filing is available through the SEC.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Together, the results and risks put the valuation story in perspective: strong Data Center growth supplied evidence of real demand for AI infrastructure, while the share-price-based ranking reflected investors’ valuation of NVIDIA at specific points in time.
