The Sony WH-1000XM5 uses microphones and onboard processing to create sound that opposes some of the noise around you. This active noise cancellation (ANC) can make steady sounds such as vehicle rumble or air conditioning less noticeable, but it does not eliminate every sound or create silence.
How the WH-1000XM5 reduces outside noise
ANC works as a microphone, processing and speaker loop. Microphones detect surrounding sound, the headphones process that signal, and their speakers play opposing sound—what Sony calls “antiphase sound.” Where the incoming noise and the headphone output meet, they can reduce the sound heard by the wearer.
This is a high-level explanation, not a complete description of Sony’s signal-processing design. Sony’s published guide does not specify a particular filtering algorithm, sampling rate or processing latency.

Which microphones and processors are involved?
Sony specifies four noise-canceling microphones in each earcup. The Help Guide distinguishes internal microphones, which pick up noise while ANC is operating, from external microphones, which also support voice-related uses. The microphone positions are on both the left and right units.

Sony says the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 and Integrated Processor V1 work together to control the eight microphones. The company describes its Multi Noise Sensor technology as capturing ambient sound, including higher-frequency sound, for reduction. These are Sony’s product descriptions; they are not independent measurements of cancellation performance.
Why the result changes with the sound and the fit
Noise type and surroundings
Sony says noise canceling works primarily on low-frequency sounds, such as vehicle noise and air conditioning. It does not completely cancel noise, and some sounds may remain more noticeable than others. Sony also notes that perceived sound can vary with street conditions when you are in a car or bus.

Fit and microphone placement
A good fit helps the headphones reduce outside sound. Sony warns that wearing them in a way that weakens the seal can reduce performance. Covering the microphones can interfere with noise canceling or cause feedback, so avoid pressing objects against the earcups’ microphone areas.

Auto NC Optimizer adjusts noise-canceling performance for wearing conditions and environmental factors, including atmospheric pressure. Because it responds to those conditions, the perceived effect may change as your fit or environment changes. Sony’s cited instructions describe automatic optimization and mode switching, not a manual maximum-ANC slider.

How to switch noise canceling and ambient sound
Press the NC/AMB button to switch between noise canceling and Ambient Sound Mode. Ambient Sound Mode lets surrounding sound through rather than using the noise-canceling mode. You can also change settings in Sony’s companion app. Sony renamed Headphones Connect to Sony | Sound Connect beginning in October 2024; exact app labels and controls may vary with software updates.

Sony’s official materials explain the main components and the general antiphase principle, but they do not provide a detailed proprietary signal-processing diagram or an independently validated decibel reduction figure. A specific attenuation number should not be inferred from the microphone count or processor names.
