Using more nitrogen fertilizer than a biofuel crop can take up can shrink the fuel’s climate advantage. Surplus nitrogen can raise emissions of nitrous oxide (N₂O) and increase nitrate losses from fields. The size of the effect depends on the feedstock, growing conditions, farm management, and what a lifecycle assessment counts; it does not mean that fertilizer always erases biofuel’s benefit.

How nitrogen fertilizer affects a biofuel’s climate footprint

Biofuels are made from crops or other biological material, so their climate impact includes more than what comes out of an engine. Growing and processing the feedstock also use energy and can produce greenhouse-gas emissions. Nitrogen fertilizer matters because crops do not absorb all the nitrogen applied to a field. Nitrogen left in the soil can be transformed into N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas, or lost as nitrate.

When additional fertilizer produces little additional crop growth, the climate costs of those losses can rise without a matching increase in feedstock. That can reduce the greenhouse-gas savings credited to the resulting fuel. It is not accurate to assume that all applied nitrogen becomes N₂O, or that every crop responds to fertilizer in the same way.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that biofuel combustion releases CO₂, but the net effect depends on how the fuel is produced and whether cultivation emissions are included in the comparison. Its overview also notes that cellulosic biomass requires less fertilizer and pesticides than corn or sugar cane, while commercial cellulosic ethanol production faces technical and economic challenges. What a three-year switchgrass study found

A 2016 study measured soil N₂O emissions and nitrate leaching across a range of nitrogen-fertilizer rates in switchgrass during the three years after establishment. As nitrogen inputs rose, annual N₂O emissions and nitrate leaching increased. Meanwhile, the crop became less responsive to additional nitrogen over time. The authors reported that annual N₂O emissions rose exponentially across the fertilizer gradient, rather than following the fixed percentage assumed by the IPCC Tier 1 emission-factor approach.

For that study’s estimated ethanol mitigation capacity, the result at 56 kg of nitrogen per hectare was −5.71 ± 0.22 Mg CO₂e per hectare per year; at 196 kg N/ha it was −2.97 ± 0.18 Mg CO₂e/ha/year. The values indicate that the estimated climate benefit was nearly halved at the higher rate in that particular analysis. They are not a universal estimate for switchgrass grown elsewhere, let alone for all biofuels: the figures reflect the study’s crop, field conditions, period, and accounting method. The authors concluded that minimizing nitrogen fertilizer use is important to fully realize cellulosic biofuel climate benefits. Study: “Nitrogen fertilization challenges the climate benefit of cellulosic biofuels” (2016).

Why lifecycle boundaries change the comparison

A fair comparison needs to account for the same stages and outcomes on both sides. For a biofuel, that can include feedstock production, fertilizer-related N₂O and nitrate losses, processing, fuel use, crop yield, and changes in soil carbon. Omitting cultivation emissions can make a fuel’s production pathway look more favorable than a broader lifecycle assessment would.

A 2012 USDA Agricultural Research Service analysis reported that feedstock production can contribute at least 50% of a biofuel’s lifecycle global warming intensity. Its reported median feedstock intensities ranged from 50 to 500 kg CO₂e per megagram of feedstock, an order-of-magnitude spread associated with variation and uncertainty in methods and input data. The analysis identified nitrogen use, N₂O emissions, and tillage practices as potential mitigation levers. Keep field N₂O distinct from nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) released during fuel combustion. They are different emissions from different stages; for example, EIA notes that biodiesel combustion may produce slightly more NOₓ than petroleum diesel. That is not the same claim as fertilizer-related N₂O from crop production.

Why fertilizer source alone does not settle the result

A two-year study of sunflower and canola grown in subtropical no-till soils compared mineral fertilizer, poultry manure, pig deep-litter, and a no-nitrogen control. The fertilized treatments received 60 kg of available N per hectare. Grain yield and crop nitrogen accumulation were higher in fertilized treatments than in the control, but did not differ among the nitrogen sources. Crop nitrogen-use efficiency averaged 50% lower with manure than with mineral fertilizer.

In that study, N₂O emissions were 1.37 kg N/ha for the control, 2.04 for mineral fertilizer, 4.12 for pig deep-litter, and 4.95 for poultry manure. Yet manure treatments also increased soil organic carbon stocks faster; after two years, they had significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse-gas intensity than mineral fertilizer in that specific system. This is why comparing field N₂O alone—or assuming manure is automatically lower-emission—cannot establish which production pathway has the lower overall climate impact. Study: “Greenhouse gas emissions and global warming potential from biofuel cropping systems fertilized with mineral and organic nitrogen sources” (2020).

How farmers can reduce nitrogen losses

USDA Climate Hubs recommends using the 4Rs of nutrient management: the right source, rate, time, and place. The goal is to better match nitrogen supply to crop uptake and reduce losses through leaching, runoff, and gaseous pathways. The appropriate rate and timing depend on the crop and location, so these measures are management principles rather than a universal fertilizer prescription.

  • Set a realistic rate. Base yield goals on multiple years of data and crop-specific guidance rather than assuming that more nitrogen will keep increasing yields.
  • Time applications to crop demand. Where practical, apply nitrogen while plants are actively growing. Split applications can place more of it closer to periods of high demand.
  • Use suitable placement and delivery. For irrigated crops, fertigation can deliver nitrogen in smaller applications. Placement should follow local crop and soil recommendations.
  • Check whether more nitrogen is needed. Pre-sidedress nitrate testing can help determine whether mid-season soil nitrogen is sufficient for a yield goal or whether side-dress nitrogen may be useful. Follow local sampling and interpretation guidance; a soil test does not measure lifecycle emissions.
  • Consider enhanced-efficiency products cautiously. Slow-release or inhibitor-treated fertilizers can reduce N₂O emissions in some cases, but USDA notes that broader guidance needs more research and that added cost can be a concern. No product guarantees a reduction in every cropping system.

USDA’s guidance describes the 4Rs as helping maximize crop nitrogen uptake and reduce losses to leaching, runoff, or gases such as N₂O and ammonia. USDA Climate Hubs: Following Nutrient Management Guidelines can Help to Reduce Nitrous Oxide Emissions.

What to check when judging a biofuel claim

  • Which feedstock and production pathway are being compared?
  • Is the nitrogen rate appropriate for crop need, and how do yield and nitrogen losses change as the rate changes?
  • Does the comparison include field N₂O, nitrate losses, processing, fuel use, and soil-carbon changes on a consistent basis?
  • Are the reported results specific to a study’s crop, location, period, and lifecycle method, or are they being presented as a general rule?
