Use NFL practice reports to track participation, the separate Game Status Report to understand the team’s stated availability designation, and the official inactive list near kickoff as the final pregame check. “Questionable” means uncertain, not a promise that a player will play. Your decision also depends on when your fantasy platform locks the lineup and whether a usable replacement will still be available.
What the practice report tells you
The NFL practice report records how much a player participated; it does not by itself rule the player in or out for the game. The NFL defines the participation categories as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation and Full Participation. Limited means less than 100 percent of normal repetitions; Full means 100 percent.
Read practice participation as a trend across the scheduled practice days, not as a guarantee. A change from Did Not Participate to Limited or Full shows a change in reported practice workload, but it is not a medical forecast or proof of a normal game role. The NFL injury-report policy separates participation reporting from game status.

What Questionable, Doubtful and Out mean
The Game Status Report answers a different question: the team’s stated availability for the game. Under the NFL’s policy, Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful means participation is unlikely, and Out means the player will not play. These labels are not precise individual probabilities.

A player listed on a practice report may be left off the Game Status Report if the club is certain the player will play. The NFL says practice participation and game status should be clearly separated to avoid confusion.
“Probable” is a retired designation, not a current category in the cited policy. The NFL Competition Committee reported in 2016 that approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years played. That historical figure describes the old label; it is not a play probability for a player listed as Questionable today.

When reports and inactives are available
Timing depends on the game day, so check the schedule for the specific matchup rather than applying a Sunday-week routine to every game. In the NFL’s 2026–27 important-dates schedule, reports for Sunday games are due Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Game Status Report is due Friday, generally by 4:00 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. If a player’s condition changes after the first Game Status Report, the NFL says it must be updated. See the NFL important-dates schedule for the applicable game schedule.
NFL Fantasy says teams designate inactive players about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. Treat that list as the final pregame confirmation, but do not assume a Questionable player’s status will be resolved before your platform’s lineup deadline. How to decide whether to start a questionable player
- Check the latest participation trend. Compare the player’s reported practice participation on the scheduled days. Use it to understand what was reported, not to predict a precise chance of playing or a full workload.
- Read the Game Status designation literally. Out means the player will not play under the NFL policy; Doubtful is a strong warning that participation is unlikely; Questionable leaves uncertainty.
- Check the official inactive list near kickoff. If the player is inactive, do not count on that player participating. If active, remember that active status does not establish a normal workload or fantasy production.
- Check your fantasy platform’s deadline and rules. Status feeds, lineup locks, auto-swap features and IR eligibility vary by platform and league settings. ESPN Fantasy says it uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list to update player status and describes its own rules for moving Out or IR players into an IR slot; those are platform-specific rules, not universal NFL rules. - Keep a contingency available. Identify a playable bench replacement and check whether that player’s game starts before the starter’s status is likely to be final. A replacement who locks earlier may no longer be available to swap in after a late-game update.
Handling a questionable player in a late game
For a late kickoff, weigh the latest official information against the timing of your available replacement’s game and your platform’s lineup lock. If the substitute’s game begins first, waiting for the starter’s inactive designation may leave you unable to use that substitute. If your platform allows a later move, you may have more time, but verify the actual league settings rather than assuming all platforms work alike.
NFL Fantasy documents an Auto-Swap Inactives setting that can replace a player projected to score zero points with a bench option in an order you configure. The feature only swaps players projected for zero, so it is not a general solution for every uncertain injury status. Set the backup priority deliberately and check how the feature interacts with your league’s lineup rules.

What injury reports cannot tell you
An injury designation is an availability report, not a promise of fantasy production. Even if a player is active, the practice report and Game Status designation do not establish a healthy workload, snap share or points outcome. The cited NFL policy does not give current player-specific probabilities for Questionable players, and it provides no validated conversion from practice participation to fantasy points.
