NASA researchers made laboratory analogs of space dust by expanding hydrocarbon-seeded argon into a cold, low-pressure flow and using an electric discharge to start chemical reactions. They did not collect dust from a star: the experiments used NASA Ames’s Cosmic Simulation Chamber (COSmIC) to model selected conditions found in stellar and interstellar environments.
What is NASA’s Cosmic Simulation Chamber?
COSmIC stands for Cosmic Simulation Chamber. Developed at NASA Ames, it is a laboratory facility for generating, processing and analyzing analogs of materials found in interstellar clouds, stellar surroundings and planetary environments. Its purpose is to reproduce selected gas-phase conditions under controlled laboratory settings, not to recreate all the complexity of space. NASA’s facility description explains its role in this research.
That distinction matters: “space dust” in this experiment means solid particles made in the lab to help investigate how cosmic materials might form and what they may look like. The particles were not samples returned from space.
How did the experiment make dust?
- Prepare a gas mixture. Researchers seeded argon with hydrocarbon precursors, including compounds such as methane or acetylene in relevant experiments.
- Expand it into a cold jet. The gas expanded under low-pressure, low-temperature conditions chosen to approximate aspects of space environments.
- Initiate chemistry. An electric discharge supplied energy to start reactions among the gas molecules.
- Detect and examine the products. Researchers identified and characterized molecules formed in the gas. They also collected solid grains and used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to image their structure.
The method lets scientists control conditions and study chemistry that is difficult to observe directly in space. As project leader Farid Salama put it in NASA’s 2014 release, “The harsh conditions of space are extremely difficult to reproduce in the laboratory, and have long hindered efforts to interpret and analyze observations from space.” NASA’s May 2014 account describes the experiment and its results.

What sizes did NASA report?
NASA’s 2014 release reported several scales from that experiment. These are measurements from the reported setup, not a universal size range for cosmic dust.
| Reported particle or structure | Size reported by NASA in 2014 |
|---|---|
| Nanoparticles | On the order of 10 nm |
| Grains | 100–500 nm |
| Aggregates of grains | Up to 1.5 μm in diameter |
NASA attributed those figures to Ella Sciamma-O’Brien, then a BAER Institute researcher and Ames research fellow. She described forming and detecting particles across these scales and observing their structure with SEM. The aggregate figure refers to clusters of grains, not a single grain.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

Why do later studies report different grain sizes?
Particle sizes depend on the precursor mixture and experimental conditions, so results from separate experiments should not be merged into one range. A later NASA Technical Reports Server record reports grains of 15–385 nm for an argon–methane (Ar/CH4) mixture and 40–650 nm for an argon–acetylene (Ar/C2H2) mixture under that study’s specified conditions. The technical record gives those study-specific values.
The difference is useful rather than contradictory: changing the starting hydrocarbon and conditions can change the particles produced. A size figure is meaningful only when tied to the experiment and its method.

What can these laboratory grains tell scientists?
Laboratory analogs give researchers a controlled way to investigate chemical pathways involved in dust formation and to help interpret astronomical observations. They can compare detected molecules and imaged particle structures with evidence gathered by telescopes or other space observations. The experiments do not prove that these specific grains occur in space, nor that they formed planets; they provide materials and measurements for testing scientific explanations.
NASA Technical Reports Server records describe COSmIC as a facility for studying analogs of interstellar and circumstellar materials, complementing the facility’s broader use in planetary-material research. NASA’s facility record provides additional context.
