Researchers can make some nanocrystals emit light more steadily by changing their core-shell structure or surface chemistry to reduce charge trapping and non-radiative energy loss. But “nonblinking” usually describes stable brightness in a particular experiment; it does not prove that a nanocrystal’s charge state or emission lifetime never changes.
What does blinking mean in a nanocrystal?
Quantum-dot blinking is the random fluctuation of light from a single nanocrystal under illumination. An individual dot may alternate between bright, dim, and dark periods. This is different from a change in the average brightness of a bulk sample, where many particles contribute to the combined signal.
Several mechanisms can produce this intermittency, and their importance depends on the material and measurement conditions. One widely discussed explanation involves a dot gaining or losing a charge carrier. When a dot is charged, excitation energy can be lost through non-radiative Auger recombination instead of being emitted as light. Another proposed route is that a surface-related state intercepts a photoexcited carrier before it reaches the light-emitting state. These mechanisms are not interchangeable, and no single explanation accounts for every observed blinking event. Efros and Nesbitt’s 2016 review and a 2025 review by Yang and colleagues discuss the proposed mechanisms and approaches to control them.
How do researchers suppress blinking?
Researchers engineer a nanocrystal’s internal structure or surface to reduce the processes that interrupt emission. Structural approaches are distinct from surface and ligand modifications: they target different parts of the particle and may affect different pathways.

Core-shell structures and interfaces
A core-shell nanocrystal places one semiconductor around another. By adjusting the interface and how tightly carriers are confined, researchers can reduce non-radiative losses such as Auger recombination. Hollingsworth’s review groups structural strategies into interfacial alloying, thick or “giant” shells, and selected type-II electronic structures. These designs alter the interface, shell thickness, or band alignment; they are not a single universal recipe. The review in Chemistry of Materials explains these heterostructure approaches.
Thick shells: a demonstrated example
One reported implementation uses a CdSe core with a thick CdS shell. The shell softens the core-shell confinement potential and strongly suppresses non-radiative Auger processes, helping the nanocrystal maintain its measured emission intensity. This is evidence for a particular material design, not a guarantee that every thick-shell nanocrystal will stop blinking under all conditions. The reported approaches and their limits are reviewed by Hollingsworth.

Surface and ligand modifications
Researchers also modify nanocrystal surfaces and use ligands—the molecules associated with those surfaces—to influence trapping and carrier behavior. These are surface-mediated approaches, not the same mechanism as changing core-shell confinement. Their effectiveness depends on the nanocrystal and experimental conditions; the reviewed evidence does not establish one surface treatment as a general fix. The distinction between structural and surface-mediated strategies is covered in Hollingsworth’s review.
Does “nonblinking” mean the nanocrystal never changes?
No. A 2012 study of ultra-thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals reported stable emission intensity but pronounced changes in emission lifetime. The authors interpreted this as switching between neutral and negatively charged states, with suppressed Auger decay preventing the usual intensity drop. In other words, intensity blinking can be suppressed while charge switching and lifetime blinking remain. The study in Nature Communications shows why a stable brightness trace alone cannot establish that all internal dynamics have stopped.

How should blinking-suppression results be compared?
A claim that a nanocrystal is “nonblinking” is most useful when it specifies what was changed and what was measured. When evaluating a reported result, check:
- What was modified: the core-shell structure, interface composition, band alignment, surface, or ligands.
- Which pathway was targeted: carrier escape, surface trapping, Auger recombination, or another proposed source of emission loss.
- What the measurement tracked: intensity alone, or also emission lifetime and charge state.
- Which material and conditions were tested: results for one composition or experiment should not be generalized to every nanocrystal.
This distinction matters because an intensity-only measurement can show steady brightness even when other properties of the emitting particle continue to vary, as the 2012 lifetime study demonstrates.
