You can log expenses to Google Sheets by sending text—or, with transcription enabled, a voice message—to a Telegram bot connected to an n8n workflow. The voice-and-text template uses AI to turn the message into structured expense fields, then appends each expense as a separate spreadsheet row and replies with a confirmation. It is a configurable workflow template, not a verified accounting system.
How the Telegram-to-Sheets workflow handles an expense
The n8n template connects three services: Telegram receives the message and delivers the reply, n8n runs the automation, and Google Sheets stores the expense rows. The template’s documented sequence is:
- Receive the message. A Telegram trigger accepts text or a voice message.
- Transcribe voice when enabled. An audio branch turns the recording into text; the template suggests Whisper for this step. Text messages can proceed without transcription.
- Extract expense details. An AI step parses the input into an array of expense records that follows a specified schema.
- Separate multiple expenses. A Split Out step creates one workflow item for each expense, so a message listing several purchases can become several rows.
- Write rows and prepare a reply. A loop appends expenses sequentially, with a wait between writes. Another path builds a summary, and the workflow waits for both paths before sending one Telegram confirmation.
The template author suggests a 500–1000 ms wait between spreadsheet writes to reduce missed writes. That is a template-specific setting, not a universal Google Sheets requirement. What you need to configure
Prepare the spreadsheet
Create or choose a Google Sheet with these column headers, then map the workflow’s output fields to the corresponding columns:

The header names and field mapping need to agree with the data the append step writes. A mismatch can put values in the wrong columns or leave fields unmapped.
Connect the services
The template calls for Telegram, Google, and OpenAI credentials in n8n. Enable and configure the transcription branch if you want to submit voice messages; the template names Whisper as its suggested transcription choice. Model and service availability can change, so follow the current options shown in the workflow and your connected accounts rather than treating any model name as permanent.

Choose between natural input and a command-based workflow
If you want to enter ordinary phrases or speak an expense, the AI parsing template is the more flexible of the two documented approaches. If you prefer a fixed format and do not need voice or AI parsing, a simpler template uses a command such as /spent 5 lunch.

The command-based template is documented at n8n’s Telegram and Google Sheets expense workflow. A separate template also accepts text, voice, or receipt photos and describes currency detection and reporting. It has additional setup, including a Google Sheet copy and an n8n Data Table for report state; it is not the same workflow as the voice-and-text template.
