Checking a service from several geographic locations can help distinguish an isolated probe or network failure from an outage customers are likely experiencing. The trade-off is that waiting for multiple locations—or consecutive failures—to agree can delay an alert. The right threshold depends on how quickly the service must respond and how much alert noise its team can tolerate.

This is a practical guide to multi-region synthetic monitoring, not a report of a particular platform build: the available documentation describes provider features and practices, but does not establish an author’s architecture, incidents, or measured results.

What synthetic monitoring checks

Synthetic monitoring periodically sends simulated requests or runs scripted tests, recording outcomes such as availability and latency. A simple check can request a URL or API endpoint; a more involved test can exercise a browser-based flow. Google Cloud distinguishes uptime checks from custom or Mocha-based synthetic monitors, while Elastic documents lightweight and browser-based monitors. Google Cloud’s overview and Elastic’s documentation describe these approaches.

Because a synthetic check originates outside the service, its result reflects both the service and the path between the probe and the target. One location’s failure may be a genuine user-impacting outage, but it can also result from a transient local network or probe problem. A single location cannot show whether the same failure is occurring elsewhere.

Why monitor from more than one region?

Independent locations add geographic context. If probes in several regions fail around the same time, a widespread service problem becomes more plausible than a failure confined to one probe’s network path. If only one region fails, the pattern can instead point toward regional routing, DNS, or CDN behavior—or an issue affecting just part of the user base. Grafana explains how location choice can reveal regional DNS, routing, and CDN misconfiguration in its probe-location guide.

Probe placement matters: choose locations that resemble where users are, rather than treating a large number of arbitrary regions as automatically better. A global service may need coverage across its main user markets; a service used in one country may get more useful signals from probes within or near that country. AWS describes probes as source-and-destination pairs and documents network measurements such as packet loss and round-trip time in its monitoring setup guide and probe dashboard documentation.

How to set alert rules without masking real outages

A multi-region policy typically asks whether failures meet a quorum: a specified number of locations must fail before the alert fires. Another policy can require consecutive failed runs, or retry a check before counting it as a failure. These controls reduce notifications caused by short-lived faults, but every added agreement or retry can postpone notification. Use stricter confirmation for low-impact checks and a faster path for failures with severe user or SLO consequences.

Location quorum

New Relic documents an alert condition that fires when a chosen number of locations fail simultaneously; its example uses four of six locations. That is an illustration of the feature, not a universal threshold. A service with users concentrated in one region may need to treat failure there as important even if the global majority of probes pass. See New Relic’s multi-location alert guidance.

Consecutive failures and regional conditions

Google Cloud’s synthetic-monitor creation guidance says console-created monitors default to an alert policy for two or more consecutive test failures. Separately, its uptime-check troubleshooting page describes a default condition that requires simultaneous failures from at least two regions. Those are distinct product behaviors, not one combined rule. Review the policy attached to the specific monitor rather than assuming one default applies to every Google Cloud check. Monitor creation guidance and uptime-check troubleshooting explain them.

Retries from one location

New Relic documents a separate rule for synthetic alert monitors: a failure is registered only after three monitor attempts from one location return an error. This retry behavior is specific to that documented feature; do not assume it applies to other monitor types or providers. See New Relic’s synthetic alert documentation.

Choose the delay deliberately

For each check, decide how quickly an alert must arrive and what evidence is enough to wake someone. A single failure from any location is fast but more exposed to transient faults. A multi-location quorum offers corroboration but can miss or understate a regional outage if the threshold is too high. Consecutive-run requirements and retries add further delay. The thresholds should reflect the service’s user impact and SLO; there is no documented universal best setting.

What a platform comparison should cover

Do not choose solely by the number of available probe locations. Compare the operational details that determine whether a check represents your users and produces an actionable alert:

  • Geographic footprint: Are probes available near the users and regions that matter?
  • Check type: Does the service support the protocol or API check you need, as well as scripted or browser-based journeys if required?
  • Deployment: Can you use managed public probes, private locations, or both? Elastic documents managed global and private locations.
  • Failure logic: Can you configure location quorum, retries, and consecutive-failure thresholds? How much notification delay does each choice add?
  • Diagnostics: Can you inspect results by region and see useful artifacts or network metrics?
  • Alert routing: Can failures reach the team and incident workflow that need to act on them?
  • Data handling: Do the service’s data-residency terms fit your deployment? Google Cloud says uptime-check request data is not guaranteed to remain in a specific geography; check the current terms that apply to your setup in its overview.
  • Frequency and cost: What execution schedule is available, and what does it cost at the frequency and scale you need?

These are comparison criteria, not a ranking of vendors. AWS, Google Cloud, New Relic, and Elastic document different monitoring features; availability and behavior depend on the particular product, check type, and configuration.

Account for run frequency, load, and cost

More frequent runs can reveal a violation sooner because less time passes between checks. They also mean more executions, which can add load to the monitored service and increase monitoring cost. Google Cloud explicitly notes that execution frequency affects load and cost in its synthetic-monitor creation guide. AWS also documents costs for probes in its network monitoring setup guide. Check current pricing and product limits for the exact service and configuration; cost cannot be inferred from monitoring frequency alone.

Put the signal in context

A useful incident response looks at the pattern, not only the alert state: which locations failed, whether failures were simultaneous, whether latency or packet loss changed, and whether the check exercised the part of the service users care about. A regional-only failure can be real even when most locations succeed; a single-location failure can still warrant investigation even when it does not meet the paging threshold. Treat the quorum as an alerting policy, not proof that everything outside the threshold is healthy.

For an actual first-person build story, specifics such as the platform’s architecture, probe providers, schedule, thresholds, incidents, cost, and before-and-after alert outcomes would need to come from its builder. Vendor documentation supports the patterns above, but does not establish those details or any measured reduction in false alarms.
