Rockstar has not confirmed how much storage GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) will require. As of October 7, 2026, the official materials reviewed do not give an install size, and a report updated October 2 found no size listed on the PlayStation or Xbox store pages. The amount of free space you will need is therefore still unknown; check your console’s store listing again when preloading begins rather than relying on an online estimate.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 storage?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms, but its platform and edition information does not state an install size. The October 2, 2026 storefront check likewise found no size listed for either console. That does not establish what the final download or installed game will weigh; it means no exact figure is confirmed by those sources.
Take-Two Interactive announced a November 19, 2026 release date and said digital preloading begins November 12. These are announced dates and may change. When the preload becomes available, check the current listing on your own console for the platform-specific download details and required free space.
Do not treat online estimates as requirements
Claims giving a specific number of gigabytes should be considered unconfirmed unless Rockstar or the relevant console storefront publishes that figure. No official install-size, patch-size, or PS5-versus-Xbox size comparison is established in the sources cited here.

- Customize your drive’s RGB lighting with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only) to show off your style and make every play personal.
- Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
- Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
- Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.
Does the boxed edition avoid a large download?
No. Rockstar says the boxed edition contains a download code and no disc. Buying that package still requires downloading the game and having enough storage on the console.
How to make room on a PS5
These steps can free console storage without needing to know GTA 6’s eventual size. The PS5 instructions below are specific to Sony’s console; they do not apply to Xbox.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Check your free space: Open Settings > Storage on the PS5 to see what is using console storage.
- Delete games or applications you no longer need: Sony says purchases you delete can be downloaded again from your game library. If a game offers a Customize option, you may be able to remove individual portions, such as unused add-ons, while keeping the rest installed.
- Move games you are not playing to USB extended storage: This can free console space while keeping those games stored. PS5 games on USB extended storage cannot be played directly from that drive; move them back to PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play.
- Consider adding a compatible M.2 SSD if you need playable space: Sony supports PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drives from 250 GB to 8 TB and recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster. The drive needs effective heat dissipation. Check Sony’s requirements for the drive and heatsink dimensions before buying or installing one. Sony says PS5 games can be played from M.2 SSD storage.
USB storage or an M.2 SSD for PS5?
| Storage option | Useful for | Can you play PS5 games directly from it? |
|---|---|---|
| USB extended storage | Keeping games you are not currently playing and freeing console storage | No. Move the game back to PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage before playing. |
| Compatible M.2 NVMe SSD | Adding storage for PS5 games | Yes. Sony says PS5 games are playable from M.2 SSD storage. |
The M.2 specifications above are Sony’s compatibility guidance, not a prediction of GTA 6’s storage requirement. An SSD must meet Sony’s interface, capacity, speed, physical-size, and cooling requirements; a generic USB drive is not a way to play PS5 games directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Xbox Series X|S owners should do
Xbox Series X|S is an announced launch platform, but the sources cited here do not establish an Xbox-specific GTA 6 free-space figure or provide Xbox storage-management instructions. Check the current Xbox store listing and Microsoft’s console guidance for the appropriate storage steps when the preload is available; do not use the PS5 USB or M.2 instructions as Xbox compatibility advice.
