For a new computer, 8 GB is a reasonable starting point for basic browsing, documents, and streaming; 16 GB is a more flexible choice for everyday multitasking. Editing, gaming, and other demanding work can call for more. Those are recommendations, not guarantees: the right amount depends on your operating system, apps, what you run at once, and whether your computer supports an upgrade.

What RAM does—and what its capacity tells you

RAM is temporary working memory for the apps and data your computer is using. It is cleared when the computer shuts down or restarts. More RAM can let a device keep more work active at once: Microsoft puts it this way, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” Microsoft Support explains how memory relates to performance.

Capacity alone does not determine how fast a computer feels. If your usual apps and workload fit comfortably in memory, adding RAM may not make them faster. It is most relevant when the computer is short of memory while you work, or when you want to run more apps and larger projects together.

How much RAM to choose for your workload

There is no evidence here for one universal amount for a “typical user.” The figures below are recommendations from Microsoft and HP, not population statistics or performance guarantees. Treat them as starting points, then check the requirements of your operating system and applications.

Workload Memory guidance How to interpret it
Basic browsing, documents, or streaming At least 4 GB, according to Microsoft’s consumer guidance; Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. Four gigabytes is a baseline, not a promise of a comfortable experience with many tabs or apps open.
Everyday use, study, or remote work HP’s 2026 buyer guide recommends 16 GB. This is HP’s vendor guidance. Consider your actual multitasking and the exact apps you use.
Gaming HP’s 2026 buyer guide recommends 16–32 GB. Game requirements vary; check the specific games and other software you run alongside them.
Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects Microsoft says 16 GB or more may fit editing or high-performance projects. HP’s 2026 guide recommends 32–64 GB for creative work. These are different vendor recommendations, not a single threshold. Project size and application requirements matter.

Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum memory requirement for Windows 11. That is an installation minimum, not a recommendation for every workload or a guarantee of comfortable day-to-day use. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.

Check whether your computer actually needs more

Do not decide from a single memory-use percentage or the amount of “free” RAM. What matters is whether memory pressure affects the work you do. Apple cautions, “When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” Apple explains how to assess memory in Activity Monitor.

On a Mac

Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory tab. Apple recommends using Memory Pressure to judge whether memory is being managed efficiently: green indicates efficient use, yellow suggests the computer may eventually need more memory, and red indicates that more RAM is needed. The view also shows physical memory, app and wired memory, compression, cached files, and swap used. Read those indicators together rather than treating unused memory as a performance goal.

On Windows

Open Task Manager, choose Performance, then Memory. Kingston says this view shows memory capacity, usage, slots, form factor, and speed. Check it while doing the activities that feel slow, and compare the information with the specifications for your exact computer. High usage by itself does not prove that an upgrade will help; first consider which apps and workloads are using memory.

Before buying or upgrading RAM

Memory is not interchangeable across every computer. Before purchasing a kit—or paying extra for a larger configuration when ordering a computer—confirm the machine’s exact specifications and whether its RAM can be upgraded. Kingston’s memory selection guide and HP’s 2026 buyer guide discuss the factors involved.

  • Upgradeability: Check the exact model’s maintenance documentation. Some laptops have soldered memory that cannot be replaced or expanded.
  • Memory type and form factor: The module must match what the computer supports.
  • Capacity and slots: Verify the maximum supported capacity, how many slots are available, and whether any are already occupied.
  • Speed and channel requirements: Match the manufacturer’s supported specifications and configuration guidance.
  • Software requirements: Check the current requirements for your operating system and the specific apps, games, or projects you use.

On Windows, Task Manager’s Performance > Memory view can help identify the current configuration, but use the computer maker’s documentation to confirm what the model supports. If the memory is fixed or the required configuration is unclear, do not buy a kit based on capacity alone.

Choose between more RAM now and an upgrade later

If you are buying a computer, compare the cost of selecting more memory at purchase with the possibility that the configuration cannot be changed later. If you already own a computer, upgrade only after confirming both that it is upgradeable and that memory is limiting your real workload. More RAM is useful when it addresses that constraint; it is not a general-purpose speed boost.
