One ordinary text prompt has a real resource cost, but the best disclosed provider-specific estimate is small: Google says a median Gemini Apps text-generation prompt used 0.24 watt-hours of electricity and 0.26 milliliters of water, based on May 2025 data. That is not a universal figure for every AI service or task. It is reasonable to care about AI’s growing infrastructure without treating each routine question as a major environmental offense.
What does one AI prompt use?
There is no reliable universal number. The impact varies with the model, prompt and response length, task complexity, hardware, how fully the machines are used, data-center overhead, electricity source, and cooling system.
One useful disclosed example comes from Google. For a median text-generation prompt in Gemini Apps, Google estimated 0.24 watt-hours (Wh) of electricity, 0.03 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent (gCO2e), and 0.26 milliliters (mL) of water, using May 2025 data. Google says the energy is equivalent to watching television for less than nine seconds. These are Google’s estimates, not an independently verified measurement of every prompt or provider. Google’s explanation of its measurement describes the method and its limits.
Why do estimates vary?
What the calculation includes
Google’s estimate covers more than the accelerator chip while it is actively processing a prompt. Its method accounts for accelerator use, host CPU and memory, idle machines kept ready for reliability, data-center overhead, and water estimated using the company’s average fleet water-usage effectiveness. Google reports that a narrower calculation counting only active accelerator use would be 0.10 Wh and 0.12 mL of water. That lower figure is a boundary comparison, not an alternative full-stack estimate.

The figures are also specific to a median Gemini Apps text prompt and a point in time. Google uses its 2024 average fleet grid-carbon intensity for emissions and its 2024 average fleet water-usage effectiveness for the water estimate. The company says the analysis has not been independently verified and does not represent all prompts or future performance.
The task can matter more than the prompt label
A short text question is not equivalent to a long response, a request involving extensive reasoning, image or video generation, or an agentic task that performs multiple steps. The International Energy Agency says simple text queries typically use less electricity than running a television for the same amount of time, while reasoning, video, and agentic tasks may use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. That is a broad comparison, not a multiplier that applies to every product or request. The IEA’s 2026 update discusses these higher-intensity workloads.

How does one small prompt fit into AI’s larger electricity use?
A modest cost per ordinary text prompt does not mean the infrastructure is inconsequential. The IEA estimated that data centers—not AI alone—used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, around 1.5% of global electricity use. Its 2025 Base Case projected roughly 945 TWh by 2030. In an April 2026 update, the agency said data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while demand from AI-focused data centers grew 50%; its updated 2030 outlook is about 950 TWh. The 2025 figure is an estimate, the 2030 figures are projections, and the overall data-center totals include non-AI computing.

The IEA identifies AI as a major driver of growth, but it would be misleading to call all data-center electricity AI electricity. What does the water figure mean?
Google’s 0.26 mL estimate is calculated by applying its fleet-average water-usage effectiveness to energy per prompt. It is a water-consumption estimate, not a direct measurement of the effect of a particular request on a particular watershed. It also does not establish a comparable water footprint for other AI providers.
Water impact depends on where a data center operates, its cooling design, local climate and water conditions, and what the accounting includes. The IEA reports that cooling accounts for about 7% of electricity use in efficient hyperscale data centers, compared with more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise centers. That is a difference in cooling-related electricity, not a universal measure of water consumed. Water used directly for cooling and water associated with electricity generation are distinct accounting questions.

So, how guilty should you feel?
There is no evidence-based moral threshold that translates a prompt into a required level of guilt. For a typical, short text question, the disclosed Gemini estimate is small in absolute terms; it does not follow that every AI task is equally small or that aggregate use is trivial. Both can be true: one routine prompt is not the same as a large industrial activity, and billions of uses plus more energy-intensive workloads can add to substantial infrastructure demand.

If you want to reduce unnecessary use, focus on whether the task is useful and proportionate rather than worrying over each ordinary question. Avoiding needless repeated generations is a reasonable choice, but individual restraint cannot substitute for better efficiency, transparent reporting, and responsible infrastructure decisions by providers. A 2025 preprint modelling energy, water, and emissions across 30 language models also finds variation by model and prompt type; its results are estimates based on public API information, regional environmental multipliers, and inferred hardware—not universal direct-meter readings. The preprint’s methods and results illustrate why model-to-model comparisons need careful qualification.
