Windows 11 requires a 64 GB or larger storage device. That is the official minimum for the drive itself—not a promise that 64 GB of free space will remain available after Windows, recovery data, system files, applications, and personal files are installed.
For an upgrade or feature update, the space needed varies. Microsoft’s examples range from 4.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more, depending on the update method, optional features, languages, installed updates, and whether external storage is available.
Windows 11 storage requirements at a glance
| Situation | Space requirement | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 minimum requirement | 64 GB or larger storage device | The PC must have a qualifying internal or other supported storage device. This is not the same as 64 GB of free space. |
| Windows 11 Installation Assistant | 9 GB of free disk space | Microsoft says the Installation Assistant needs this space to download Windows 11. The 64 GB device requirement still applies. |
| Typical feature update | 6–11 GB or more | The actual amount depends on the update path and the contents of the PC. |
| Typical quality update | 2–3 GB or more | Monthly or other quality updates generally need less space than feature updates. |
| Microsoft feature-update examples | 4.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more | Examples vary with optional features, language resources, update content, and external storage. |
The minimum is documented by Microsoft in its Windows 11 requirements and system requirements pages.

Is 64 GB of free space required?
No. The commonly repeated statement that “Windows 11 requires exactly 64 GB of free space” is incorrect. Microsoft specifies a 64 GB or larger storage device, not 64 GB of available space for the Windows installation.

- Installed applications and optional Windows features
- User accounts, documents, photos, and other personal data
- Temporary files and working space for future updates
Windows also warns that storage needs can increase over time as updates and features are added. A 64 GB drive may technically meet the eligibility requirement but leave very little room for normal use or future updates.
How much free space does a Windows 11 update need?
There is no single free-space figure that applies to every Windows 11 feature update. Microsoft gives typical estimates of 6–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2–3 GB or more for quality updates, but the real requirement can be higher.
Windows Update may need space for several operations at once:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Downloading the update and optional content
- Expanding and applying the installation files
- Updating language and feature resources
- Keeping files that allow Windows to roll back the update—typically for 10 days
- Maintaining temporary servicing data while the update is installed
As a result, the space occupied by the downloaded update is not necessarily the amount of free space required on the system drive.
Why two PCs can need different amounts
Windows may temporarily disable or reduce the space used by hiberfile.sys, pagefile.sys, and other system files while applying a feature update. Their sizes differ between computers, particularly because the paging file and hibernation data are influenced by installed RAM and how the device is configured.

Installed languages, optional features, drivers, and existing quality updates also change the calculation. On devices with Reserved Storage, Windows Update uses that reserved space before consuming other available space on the drive.
Microsoft’s feature-update space examples
Microsoft documents several Windows 11 feature-update scenarios rather than one universal number:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Update scenario | Example minimum |
|---|---|
| Optimized for reduced offline time, with minimal optional content | 20 GB |
| Optimized for minimal disk space, with minimal optional content | 5.5 GB or more |
| Minimal-disk-space installation using external storage | 4.5 GB or more |
| More optional features, languages, and updates installed | 20 GB or more, 13.75 GB or more, or 7 GB or more, depending on the scenario |
These figures explain why fixed advice such as “you always need 10 GB” or “every feature update needs 20 GB” can be misleading. The correct amount depends on the particular PC and update path.
How to check and free space before installing Windows 11
Check available storage
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the amount shown for the Windows system drive, normally Local Disk (C:).
- Open the storage categories to identify large applications, temporary files, documents, or other content.
For a new installation, verify that the target drive is at least 64 GB in capacity. For an existing PC, check available free space as well as total drive capacity.
Use Windows Cleanup recommendations
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review the sections Windows presents, such as temporary files, large or unused files, and files synced to the cloud.
- Select items you no longer need.
- Click Clean up for the applicable section.
Review files carefully before deleting them. Do not remove personal files merely to reach a target unless you have copied them elsewhere.

Remove unused optional features
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features. Select an optional feature you do not use and choose Uninstall where available.
Optional features vary considerably in size. Some use less than 1 MB, while the Windows Mixed Reality portal can use almost 2 GB. Removing one large unused component may help more than deleting many small temporary files.
Review installed languages
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Review the installed languages and their language resources.
- Remove languages and associated typing, speech, text-to-speech, or handwriting resources that you do not need.
During update processing, each installed language and its related resources can consume approximately 175 MB to more than 300 MB.
What if Windows Update says there is not enough space?
Windows displays a notification when an update cannot be installed because the system drive lacks space. Select Fix issues in that notification. Windows can show how much additional space is needed and may offer to use an external storage device.
External storage can reduce the amount of free space needed on the Windows drive because Windows uses it temporarily during the update. It does not remove the need for a properly sized internal drive or eliminate the space required for Windows, applications, recovery data, and personal files.

Windows 11 Installation Assistant has a separate requirement
If you use Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant, Microsoft says the PC needs 9 GB of free disk space to download Windows 11 with that tool.
This 9 GB figure is specific to the Installation Assistant’s download requirement. It does not replace the minimum requirement for a 64 GB or larger storage device, and it does not guarantee that the complete upgrade will work with only 9 GB free.
Windows 11 virtual machine storage
A Windows 11 virtual machine also requires a virtual disk with 64 GB or greater capacity. Microsoft specifies Generation 2 for supported virtual machines. An in-place upgrade of an existing Generation 1 virtual machine to Windows 11 is not possible, so the VM configuration matters as well as its virtual disk size.

For eligibility, use Microsoft’s official figure: 64 GB or more of storage. For everyday use, updates, applications, and personal files, treat that as a floor rather than a sensible capacity target. A nearly full 64 GB drive is likely to create problems even if Windows 11 initially installs.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes, making the available upgrade path an important consideration for compatible PCs.
FAQ
Can Windows 11 run on a 64 GB drive?
It can meet the official minimum storage requirement if the device is 64 GB or larger, but the capacity is not the same as 64 GB of free space. Windows, recovery data, system files, applications, updates, and personal files all share that drive.
How much free space should I have before upgrading to Windows 11?
There is no universal figure. Microsoft cites typical feature-update requirements of 6–11 GB or more, while documented scenarios range from 4.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more. Check the space Windows specifically requests and leave additional room for normal operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Windows 11 need 64 GB free space?
No. The official requirement is a 64 GB or larger storage device. It is not a requirement to have 64 GB available after the operating system and other files are installed.
Why does Windows need more space than the update download?
Windows needs temporary working space to download and apply the update, process optional content and language resources, and retain rollback data, typically for 10 days. The downloaded file size therefore does not represent the full storage requirement.
Can an external drive help install a Windows 11 update?
Yes. If Windows reports insufficient space, select Fix issues in the notification. Windows may offer to use external storage temporarily, reducing the amount needed on the system drive.
Where can I remove Windows features and languages?
For optional features, open Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features. For languages, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Windows 11 requires a 64 GB or larger storage device, not 64 GB of free space. Updates commonly need 6–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2–3 GB or more for quality updates, but Microsoft’s documented scenarios range from 4.5 GB or more to 20 GB or more. Check the actual free space on C:, clean up unnecessary content, and remember that a 64 GB drive offers very little room for applications, files, and future updates.
