There is no single Motorola support period that applies to every phone. Motorola’s updates depend on the exact model, country, carrier and sales channel. By contrast, Google promises seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and newer, while Samsung promises seven Android generations and seven years of security updates for the Galaxy S26 series. Those headline figures are useful only when you also check the model-level schedule, security-patch cadence and the date from which support is counted.
The short answer
If long-term support is your first buying criterion, the clearest commitments in the cited policies are Google’s Pixel 8-and-later promise and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 promise. Both are seven-year commitments, although Google describes seven years of OS and security updates and Samsung describes seven OS generations plus seven years of security updates. Motorola does not publish one universal number for its entire catalog. It directs owners to a country-specific product schedule and warns that testing, carrier certification, regional software versions and distribution channels can change timing.
That means a brand-level ranking can mislead. Compare the exact retail model and region, identify how many major Android upgrades are stated, find the security-support end date or duration, and check whether patches are monthly, quarterly or less frequent. A published support period also does not prove that every update arrives on the same day, that every new Android feature will work on older hardware, or that a carrier variant follows the unlocked model’s schedule.
OS upgrades and security updates are different promises
An Android OS upgrade is a major platform generation, such as moving from one Android release to the next. It can change system APIs, privacy controls, interface behavior and compatibility requirements. The number of “OS generations” tells you how many major upgrades a manufacturer says a device is eligible to receive; it does not tell you the delivery date.

- Fluid 120Hz Display: Features a large 6.7-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for smooth scrolling and added durability.
A security update patches vulnerabilities and may be delivered on a separate schedule. A phone can finish receiving major Android upgrades yet continue to receive security patches, or receive a major upgrade while security releases arrive quarterly rather than monthly. Motorola explicitly distinguishes these update types in its support guidance. Samsung’s security site likewise classifies eligible devices by cadence, rather than promising that every Galaxy phone gets a monthly patch.
- OS-upgrade count: the stated number of major Android generations.
- Security-support duration: how long vulnerability fixes are planned, usually measured from a defined availability or launch date.
- Cadence: whether patches are listed as monthly, quarterly, biannual or another model-specific cycle.
- Rollout timing: when your specific carrier and region actually receive a release.
Motorola: support is model- and region-specific
What Motorola’s general policy says
Motorola’s Update Android software help page tells owners to check the product and country-specific schedule to answer “Will my device receive the next Android upgrade?” It says most phones receive security updates regularly, but the exact cycle varies by model. The page also explains that a phone may have multiple software versions to test across regions and distribution channels.
Motorola states that carrier and partner dependencies can delay a release. Its explanation is explicit: “Because dependencies on carriers and other key partners for certifications, independent testing, and requests for changes take more time, all phone owners don’t receive updates at the same time, even in the same region.” This describes staggered delivery; it is not a measured delay that can be applied to every update or every device.

A current product-page example is not a lineup-wide guarantee
The motorola signature product-support page is a useful example of why the exact page matters. For that named product and market page, Motorola lists Android 17 as the next OS and says the Android 17 upgrade began on September 14, 2026. The page also says the device is scheduled to continue receiving security updates and provides device-specific details and qualifications.

Those terms should not be generalized to every Moto G, Edge, Razr or other Motorola model. The cited page is tied to a particular product and the India support domain. Motorola cautions that its communicated information is not a commitment or obligation, and that timing, content, region and channel can change. Treat the page as the current statement for that product, not as evidence of a universal Motorola seven-year policy.
What this means when you own a Motorola phone
- Find the exact model name and model number in Settings > About phone. “Edge” or “Moto G” alone is not specific enough.
- Open Motorola’s support site for your country and select that exact product. Confirm the listed next OS version, security-update statement and any end date.
- Check whether the phone is an unlocked retail model or a carrier variant. Certification and carrier testing can change the rollout sequence.
- Read the page’s date and disclaimer. Motorola’s schedule is a plan that can change, not proof that an update will arrive on a particular day.
Google Pixel: seven years for Pixel 8 and later
Google’s Pixel software-updates support table lists seven years of OS updates and seven years of security updates for Pixel 8 and later generations. Google measures that period from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States, not from the day an individual customer activates a phone or from a carrier launch.
Google announced the policy for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro in its seven-year software-support announcement. The announcement describes OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops as part of the software-support program. The current support table is the place to verify a particular model, because earlier Pixel generations have their own, shorter entries.

“Pixel” by itself therefore is not a seven-year guarantee. Pixel 8 and newer qualify for the cited seven-year commitment; older models must be checked individually in Google’s table. The promise also does not mean that every Feature Drop or hardware-dependent capability will appear on every model. It states the support period, not identical feature parity.

Samsung: seven OS generations and seven security years for Galaxy S26
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series announcement states seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for that series, measured from its global launch date. This is a specific Galaxy S26-family commitment, not a blanket promise for every Galaxy phone.
For the broader lineup, consult Samsung Mobile Security’s Security Updates Scope. Samsung places eligible models into monthly, quarterly and biannual security-update schedules. These labels describe the planned cadence category; they are not a guarantee that every supported Galaxy device receives the same number of patches or that an update arrives on the same date in every country.
How to interpret Samsung’s numbers
- Seven OS generations means seven major Android platform upgrades for the Galaxy S26 series under the announcement’s terms.
- Seven years of security updates is a separate duration counted from the global launch date.
- Monthly, quarterly and biannual are cadence classifications on Samsung’s security scope page, and the eligible-device list can change.
- Other Galaxy models: do not inherit the S26 promise automatically; verify the exact model on Samsung’s current scope and product pages.

How to compare a phone before buying
1. Identify the exact SKU and market
Write down the full model name, storage variant if relevant, model number, country of sale and whether it is unlocked or carrier-sold. A family name can cover several generations with different policies. A support promise on a US page may not describe an India, European or carrier variant.
2. Separate the two support clocks
Record the stated OS-upgrade count in one column and the security-support duration or end date in another. Do not convert “seven OS generations” into “seven years” unless the manufacturer also states that duration. Samsung’s S26 wording supplies both figures; Motorola’s general page does not supply one lineup-wide number.

- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
3. Find the support starting date
Google counts from first US Google Store availability. Samsung counts the S26 commitment from global launch. Motorola’s product pages are model- and region-specific, so use the date and terms displayed on the page for your market. Buying a phone months after launch does not normally restart the manufacturer’s support clock.
4. Check cadence and rollout conditions
A monthly security schedule is different from a quarterly or biannual schedule, and none guarantees a simultaneous release worldwide. Motorola’s carrier-certification explanation is especially important for phones sold through operators. Treat cadence as an expectation of frequency, not a delivery-day promise.
5. Verify immediately before purchase
Support pages can change as manufacturers add models, revise schedules or publish a new security-scope date. Open the live official page, read the disclaimer and save the model-specific entry. Do not rely on a retailer’s generic “years of updates” badge when the manufacturer has a more precise statement.

- Delivery punctuality: No cited official source establishes an independent cross-brand average for how quickly updates arrive. Vendor commitments are not measured delivery statistics.
- Feature parity: A phone may receive a new Android version without receiving every feature that requires newer hardware, sensors or regional services.
- Quality: A support period does not guarantee that every release is bug-free or that a problem-free update arrives on the first rollout wave.
- Regional eligibility: Country, carrier, certification and distribution channel can alter timing or eligibility.
- End-date interpretation: “Seven years” is meaningful only with its starting point. Google and Samsung define theirs differently, while Motorola requires a product- and region-specific check.
Which brand is the safer support choice?
Choose Pixel 8 or newer when the simplest published rule matters
Google provides the most straightforward rule in the cited material: seven years of both OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability. It is still necessary to check the exact Pixel generation, especially if you are considering a model older than Pixel 8.

Choose Galaxy S26 when you want a long commitment with a defined launch anchor
Samsung’s S26 announcement gives a seven-generation OS and seven-year security commitment from global launch. For other Galaxy models, inspect Samsung’s security-scope list and the model’s own documentation rather than assuming the S26 policy applies.
Choose Motorola only after checking the individual product page
Motorola can be suitable when a specific model’s price, hardware or software plan fits your needs, but the brand name alone cannot answer how long that phone will be supported. Confirm the exact regional schedule and account for carrier certification and staggered rollout behavior before treating the purchase as a long-term device.
Practical checklist for an update question
- Copy the model and model number from Settings > About phone.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support page for your country.
- Record the next promised Android version, if any.
- Record the security-update duration or stated end date.
- Note the support start point: first availability, global launch or the product page’s regional terms.
- Check the listed cadence and whether your carrier variant is included.
- Install updates through Settings > System > Software update (wording can vary by manufacturer) and keep a backup before a major upgrade.
The defensible comparison is therefore not “Motorola versus Samsung versus Pixel” in the abstract. It is the exact Motorola, Galaxy or Pixel model in the exact market, measured by OS generations, security end date, cadence and rollout conditions. On the cited commitments, Pixel 8-and-later and Galaxy S26 provide clear seven-year frameworks; Motorola requires the most model-by-model verification.
