If photos on your Samsung Galaxy S22 seem to move, the feature is probably Motion Photo—Samsung’s counterpart to Apple’s Live Photos. It records a few seconds of action leading up to the shutter, so you can review the clip and choose a still frame. It is not Apple’s Live Photos feature, and the two formats should not be assumed to transfer or play identically.
What Samsung calls its moving-photo feature
Samsung calls the feature Motion Photo. Samsung says it captures a few seconds of action before the shutter is released, lets you choose a still frame from that context, and can share the motion portion as a video. The feature is in the Galaxy Camera app. Samsung’s instructions describe the general Galaxy workflow; they are for Australian variants and do not establish identical controls on every S22 software build or regional model.
Apple calls its feature Live Photos. Apple documents Live Photos as capturing 1.5 seconds before and 1.5 seconds after the picture is taken. That timing applies to Apple’s feature, not Samsung Motion Photo. Apple’s capture guide explains its own timing and workflow.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Open the Camera app and select a supported photo mode.
- Look for the Motion Photo control and check whether it is enabled. Its exact position and appearance can vary, so do not rely on a universal toolbar location.
- Take a test picture, then open it in Gallery. Review the image for a Motion Photo playback or review/edit action.
Samsung’s support page confirms the basic Camera toggle and review flow, but does not provide S22-specific screenshots. If the control is missing, check that you are in a supported photo mode, note your software version, and consult Samsung support for your exact regional variant. The cited instructions are for Australian Galaxy devices; Samsung directs users elsewhere to their local subsidiary.

- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
Why the S22 may save a still instead
A still image does not necessarily mean the camera is malfunctioning. A Samsung software-update notice for the Galaxy S22+ model SM-S926B describes an Auto setting that records a Motion Photo when movement is detected and otherwise saves a still to save space. That notice is model-specific; it does not establish that every S22 model or software version has the same Auto option. Read the SM-S926B update notice.
How to choose a different still frame
Samsung says Motion Photos can be reviewed or edited so you can select the still moment to keep. The available controls may differ by device and software version.

Google Photos also documents a way to choose a frame from a motion photo: open the photo, use “Shots in this photo” to select a shot, then save it as a copy. This is Google Photos guidance, not an S22-specific guarantee; the available action can depend on the app version and how the photo was backed up or opened. Google Photos’ editing instructions describe the flow.
How to share a Motion Photo with someone else
If the recipient’s device or app does not support motion-photo playback, share the motion as a video. Samsung says Motion Photo can be shared as a video. Apple likewise documents a Save as Video option for Live Photos in its Photos workflow. These are practical video-sharing options; the cited guides do not establish that the original animated-photo experience survives every transfer or that Samsung Motion Photos convert into Apple Live Photos. Apple’s Live Photo editing guide covers its export option.
