To hunt together in Monster Hunter Rise, accept a Hub Quest—not a Village Quest—and play on compatible game editions and the same software version. You can meet in an online lobby or, on Nintendo Switch, use local wireless. A party supports up to four hunters. Cross-play compatibility is not confirmed for every platform pairing, so check the exact editions before planning a session.
How does multiplayer work in Monster Hunter Rise?
Multiplayer is built around Hub Quests. Players gather in a lobby, take the same eligible Hub Quest, and hunt together. The lobby can hold up to four players, according to Capcom’s Switch manual, PlayStation manual, and Steam manual.

Multiplayer does not make every quest cooperative. Village Quests are solo-only; being in a lobby does not let friends join them. Capcom’s manuals direct players to accept Hub Quests at the Gathering Hub, or at Elgado Outpost in Sunbreak, to play together.
Can you play Monster Hunter Rise with friends?
Yes, if you are using compatible platform editions, have the same game version, and choose an eligible Hub Quest. You can create or join a lobby, then take the quest together. The available menus vary by platform.
#1 Best Overall
- The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
- The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
- New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
- In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
- Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
Online lobby on Nintendo Switch
On Switch, use the Courier (Senri) to access online play and create or find a lobby. Capcom documents finding lobbies by conditions, Hunter Connect, or lobby ID. Online multiplayer requires an internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online. See Capcom’s Nintendo Switch multiplayer instructions.
Local wireless on Nintendo Switch
Switch players can also play together over local wireless. Capcom says each player needs a Nintendo Switch console and a copy of Monster Hunter Rise; up to four players can join. Local wireless is distinct from online play and does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Choose Play Locally to create or find a lobby.
PlayStation and Steam
PlayStation online multiplayer requires an internet connection, PSN sign-in, and PlayStation Plus, according to Capcom’s PlayStation online data instructions. Capcom’s Steam manual requires a network connection and Steam sign-in. Check the platform’s own multiplayer menu for its lobby setup rather than following Switch-specific labels.

Join Requests are the drop-in option for eligible Hub Quests. A host can send a request when posting a quest or after it has started; other hunters can search for an eligible quest and join. Capcom’s manuals state that Join Requests are not available for Village Quests. The Switch manual also excludes local multiplayer, so use an online session if you want to use this feature.

Can you play Village quests in co-op?
No. Village Quests are solo-only, including when you are already in a multiplayer lobby. To hunt with friends, take a Hub Quest at the Gathering Hub or, with Sunbreak, at Elgado Outpost. Some content may have its own participation restrictions, so do not assume that every quest becomes cooperative because the game supports multiplayer.
Does Monster Hunter Rise have cross-play?
Do not assume that players on different platforms can join the same hunt. Capcom’s PlayStation manual expressly says PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 players can play together. The official materials cited here do not establish a complete compatibility matrix covering every pairing among Nintendo Switch, Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox editions. Treat different platform editions as incompatible unless Capcom’s manual for those exact releases confirms otherwise.
Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together; it is not the same as cross-save, which concerns carrying progress between platforms. Before arranging a session, confirm the platform editions and make sure everyone has installed the same game version. Capcom’s PlayStation multiplayer instructions specify the same-version requirement.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
- Confirm platform and version. Make sure everyone is on the same software version. For different platforms, verify that the exact editions are confirmed compatible.
- Choose how to connect. Use an online lobby, or use local wireless if everyone is playing on Nintendo Switch.
- Meet in a lobby. Create or join one using the options available on your platform. A lobby supports up to four players.
- Accept a Hub Quest together. Do not choose a Village Quest if you intend to play as a group.
- Use a Join Request if appropriate. For an eligible online Hub Quest, the host can request additional hunters when posting the quest or during the hunt.
