Modern paddy seed warehouses preserve quality by controlling a chain of risks: they receive clean, traceable lots; dry seed without overheating it; verify moisture with a paddy-calibrated meter; seal dry seed against humid air and insects; and monitor storage for damage or moisture entry. Drying alone is not enough in a humid climate: paddy can absorb moisture again after it leaves the dryer.
Why humid air threatens stored paddy seed
Paddy is hygroscopic: it exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. A lot that was dried adequately can become wetter if exposed to humid air, putting storage life and seed quality at risk. IRRI’s general tropical guidance distinguishes grain from seed: grain should be below 14% moisture for safe storage, while seed should be below 12%. Its moisture-tester guidance describes 12% or below as the seed-storage-safe category. These are general guidance points, not a substitute for local seed standards or a facility’s validated procedures. The risk is concrete: IRRI gives an example in which paddy at 32°C and 77% relative humidity can equilibrate to 13.9% moisture. At the same temperature and relative humidity of 85% or higher, exposed paddy may reach about 15.5% over time. 1. Receive, clean and identify each lot
Keep varieties and seed classes traceable from intake onward. Clean the seed, select uniform material, and label lots so that handling and storage records remain attached to the right seed. 2. Dry seed without damaging germination
Drying must remove enough moisture for storage while limiting heat exposure that can damage viability. IRRI seed-quality material describes typical tropical seed-drying air temperatures around 40–42°C, including batch drying, but this is source-specific guidance—not a universal dryer setting. Equipment, seed condition, airflow, loading, and local procedures matter.
Sun drying can be vulnerable to excessive heat and uneven exposure. An IRRI scientist has warned that high sun-drying temperatures can kill the germ and reduce germination. Controlled drying approaches such as solar bubble and batch drying can help manage exposure, but the suitable method depends on lot size, labor, weather, and available equipment. 3. Measure moisture before packaging
Take representative samples and measure moisture before sealing a lot for storage. Use a meter suitable for paddy and confirm that its calibration and sampling procedure are appropriate; a generic grain-meter reading should not be assumed valid for seed paddy. IRRI’s meter guidance describes these bands: above 14% needs drying; 12–14% is categorized as safe for milling-grain storage; and 12% or below as safe for seed storage. IRRI moisture-tester guidance

If it is still too wet, dry it further and measure again before sealing.

4. Seal dry seed against humid air and insects
Hermetic storage creates a sealed barrier that protects seed from moisture exchange and insects. It is not a way to dry wet seed: seed should be dried and checked before it goes into hermetic storage. IRRI reports that hermetic storage can protect seed and extend germination, but the result depends on proper preparation and maintaining the seal. 5. Monitor condition while stored
Keep containers or liners closed and check for leakage, pest activity, condensation, or water entry. At warehouse scale, the containment system must suit the lot size and the way staff handle and inspect lots; opening a sealed package breaks the barrier. The available guidance supports moisture and insect protection from hermetic storage but does not establish a universal inspection frequency, warehouse layout, stack height, or ventilation design.

Choosing a storage approach
Open storage and ordinary porous sacks leave paddy exposed to humid air. Sealed, moisture-resistant or hermetic systems can reduce that exposure and help exclude insects, provided the seed is dry before sealing and the barrier remains intact. The right option depends on scale and handling needs; a small hermetic bag is not automatically a practical system for bulk warehouse operations.

IRRI reported that farmers using an IRRI Super Bag in Philippines case studies conducted in 2013 gained about USD 4.70 in additional profit per hectare, attributed to reduced seed rate. That is a case-study result, not a guaranteed return for another farm, warehouse, or year. IRRI report
Temperature and facility design require local decisions
Lower storage temperatures can improve seed longevity, but a conservation-storage reference should not be turned into a universal commercial-warehouse setpoint. Temperature control involves the expected storage duration, local climate, energy cost, seed standards, and facility engineering. The evidence here does not establish a single humidity setpoint, temperature target, stack height, or ventilation design suitable for every warehouse. Those specifications should come from local certification requirements and validated facility procedures.
