PC Gamer staff reported unread-email counts ranging from 0 to 76,547 in a humorous October 7, 2026 poll. The figures are personal inbox snapshots—not results from a representative survey—and the staff describe very different ways of handling the mail that piles up.
What did the PC Gamer staff report?
Senior Editor Christopher Livingston’s story asks, “What’s your unread email count?” It lists counts from individual contributors, whose inboxes and counting habits are not standardized. Some describe unread messages in a particular inbox; others explain that the displayed total does not mean every message has literally never been read.
| Staff member | Reported count | Context they gave |
|---|---|---|
| Christopher Livingston | 780 | He described this as a personal improvement after setting filters and unsubscribing. |
| Kara Phillips | 4,854 | She opens important messages and lets much of the rest accumulate. |
| Evan Lahti | 38,523 | He pointed to a long work history and old correspondence. |
| Sean Martin | 5,488 | He cited corporate notifications and press lists. |
| Phil Savage | 18 | He uses unread mail as an informal to-do list. |
| Joshua Wolens | 760 | He marks everything read when the displayed total reaches 1,000, so the actual unread messages may be far higher. |
| Andy Chalk | 49,925 | He attributed the volume to his job and criticized Gmail’s web client. |
| Jody MacGregor | 45,664 | She mentioned duplicate press releases and a period of difficulty related to ADHD. |
| Robert Jones | 17 | He said he normally aims for zero unread messages. |
| Ted Litchfield | 5 in his work inbox | His personal inbox count was not disclosed. |
| Jacob Ridley | 39,608 | He said he reads useful messages and ignores the rest. |
| Tim Clark | 37,332 | No additional explanation of the count is given here. |
| Lauren Morton | 0 at the time reported | She said her count fluctuates from zero to more than 50 during a day. |
| Fraser Brown | 76,547 | No additional explanation of the count is given here. |
Livingston also estimated that he had received roughly 50,000 emails during 2026. He reported receiving 56 over an eight-hour overnight-to-morning interval and having 284 filters. Those are his own estimates and figures, not an industry-wide email rate.
Why the totals are not directly comparable
The poll captures what contributors reported seeing in their own inboxes, not a controlled count of equivalent accounts. Work and personal mail may be treated differently, as Ted Litchfield’s work-only figure illustrates. Joshua Wolens’s periodic mark-as-read habit also shows how a displayed unread total can diverge from the number of messages someone has never opened.

The story provides no formal survey method or representative population statistic. The wide spread—from zero to 76,547—makes for a striking staff snapshot, but it cannot establish how many unread emails people generally have or what any particular total says about its owner.
What do staff do with the buildup?
The contributors describe personal workarounds rather than tested recommendations. Some prioritize important messages and leave the rest unread; others filter or unsubscribe, keep unread mail as a reminder, or periodically mark everything read. Livingston’s account includes filters and unsubscribing, while Jacob Ridley summed up his approach this way: “I read the good ones, I ignore the rest. Life is too short.”

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)

Other approaches mentioned include skimming subject lines and filing press releases so they can be found later through search. These habits serve different purposes: keeping track of replies, reducing bulk mail, or making a displayed number less prominent. The poll does not compare their effectiveness, so it offers no basis for ranking them or prescribing one for readers.

Livingston acknowledges the deliberately shaming headline, then rejects the idea that a large count should be a source of stress or shame: “It’s not your fault email turned out this way.” The article’s anecdotes do not show that unread volume measures competence or wellbeing. They show that people handle email differently, and that the number alone leaves out the context behind it.

One contributor’s mention of ADHD is a personal account, not medical guidance or evidence for a broader claim about ADHD. Readers should not infer a diagnosis or a general explanation for inbox habits from an anecdote in a staff poll.
