Google’s estimate is about 1,800 Starship launches—but it is a conditional projection, not a prerequisite for beginning a space-data-center project. In a 2025 paper, Google Research modeled that getting launch prices below roughly $200 per kilogram by about 2035 would require launching around 370,000 tonnes of additional mass to orbit. At a nominal 200-tonne payload per Starship flight, that is on the order of 1,800 launches, or about 180 a year for a decade.

What does Google’s 1,800-launch estimate mean?

It describes the scale of cumulative orbital mass that Google’s launch-cost model associates with a target price—not the number of flights needed to launch Google’s first satellite or to prove that orbital computing can work. The paper frames its analysis as a high-level evaluation of how launch costs could affect the proposal, not a comprehensive economic-feasibility study.

The arithmetic is approximate. Dividing 370,000 tonnes by a nominal 200-tonne payload gives 1,850 flights; multiplying 1,800 flights by 200 tonnes gives 360,000 tonnes. Both figures are consistent at the level of rounding used in the estimate. The model’s annual average of about 180 launches follows from spreading that approximate flight total over ten years. Actual payloads per flight, flight cadence and the mass ultimately needed would affect the count.

What assumptions produce the estimate?

Google Research extrapolates a roughly 20% annual learning rate from SpaceX’s historical launch-cost reductions. On that modeled path, prices fall below about $200/kg around 2035. The paper then estimates how much additional mass would have to be launched to orbit to support that cost trajectory and converts the mass into an approximate number of Starship flights using a 200-tonne nominal payload.

The paper also estimates Starship 4 costs to SpaceX under different component-reuse assumptions. These are model outputs based on public specifications and extrapolations, not observed Starship operating costs.

Modeled case or target Value What it represents
Launch-price target Less than about $200/kg by roughly 2035 Google Research’s projected price level, conditional on its learning-rate extrapolation.
Additional cumulative mass About 370,000 tonnes Mass the paper estimates would need to be launched to orbit in the modeled path.
Flights at nominal payload About 1,800 at 200 tonnes each Approximate translation of the mass estimate into Starship launches.
Average cadence About 180 launches per year The approximate flight count spread over a decade, not a demonstrated or announced cadence.
Starship 4, no component reuse About $460/kg Modeled cost to SpaceX without component reuse.
Starship 4, 100-times reuse About $15/kg Modeled cost to SpaceX under the paper’s 100-times-reuse assumption.
Starship 4, 15% refurbishment-cost sensitivity About $38/kg Modeled cost in a sensitivity case that includes refurbishment costs equal to 15%.

The Starship cost estimates and the sub-$200/kg target are different quantities: the former are modeled costs to SpaceX under specified reuse assumptions; the latter is the launch price used in the paper’s orbital-computing analysis. Neither should be read as a price SpaceX has demonstrated in routine operations.

Does Google need 1,800 launches to get started?

No. Google’s reported work is staged, and its initial demonstration is far smaller than the scale implied by the long-run mass estimate. A Planet Labs-built prototype carrying a Google Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) launched on a SpaceX rocket from California on October 1, 2026, according to the report. Its purpose is to test whether the TPU can operate in space while receiving about one kilowatt of continuous power, handling heat, and running models. The planned test runs the TPU in 15-minute bursts.

From a prototype to a network

The next planned demonstration is expected to use two purpose-built compute satellites linked by laser communications. Google’s longer-term concept is an 81-satellite network that processes workloads in parallel. Those are stages of a proposed program, not evidence that the full network is already operating or that its final launch count has been established.

Would orbital data centers be cheaper than terrestrial ones?

Google’s paper compares the cost of power delivered to its examined satellite designs with reported U.S. spending on power for ML-capable terrestrial data centers. At a $200/kg launch price, the modeled satellite designs yield a launched-power cost range of about $810–$7,500 per kW-year, compared with $570–$3,000 per kW-year for the terrestrial figure.

Power-cost measure Reported range Scope
Orbital launched power About $810–$7,500 per kW-year Google Research’s range for satellite designs examined in its paper, at a $200/kg launch price.
Terrestrial data-center power $570–$3,000 per kW-year Reported U.S. spending on power for ML-capable data centers, as presented in the paper.

This is a power-cost comparison, not a finding that an orbital data center is cheaper overall. The paper excludes infrastructure and building costs, and excludes chips because chip costs arise in both configurations. The ranges also overlap: the paper’s own figures do not establish that launched power is less expensive in every case.

What has to work technically?

The prototype is meant to test essential operating conditions, but a successful short demonstration would not by itself establish that orbital facilities can support large, dependable AI workloads at competitive cost.

Power and heat removal

Google’s initial test is designed to exercise continuous power delivery and cooling in space, with the TPU scheduled to run in 15-minute bursts. The reported roughly one-kilowatt figure describes the prototype test, not the power capacity of a mature orbital data center. Reliable thermal management at larger scale remains an engineering requirement.

Radiation and workload reliability

Google’s reported ground testing found a very low probability of errors during typical inference operations. Travis Beals, the Google executive managing Project Suncatcher, cautioned that a training run involving thousands of chips over months would be more problematic. He said: “We’ve done testing on the ground, but you know, there’s no test that’s completely as good as the real thing,” underscoring why in-space operation matters.

Bandwidth and latency

Parallel compute depends on moving data between chips and satellites quickly enough to keep a workload productive. Beals said that “the bandwidth and the latency between TPUs really, really matters when you’re trying to run a multi-rack workload,” and described looking ahead to workloads expected in five years. The planned laser link between two satellites is relevant to that challenge, but a demonstration of a link is not, on its own, proof of the bandwidth and latency needed for a large distributed system.

Is Google’s space-data-center plan economically realistic?

The 1,800-flight estimate does not settle that question. It makes a large launch-price reduction central to the modeled case, while the cost comparison shows that launch price can materially affect the cost of orbital power. But the paper expressly does not claim to be a full feasibility study, and its modeled reuse costs are not demonstrated operating costs.

A meaningful comparison with terrestrial facilities has to consider more than launch price. It needs to account for launch cadence and reuse, delivered cost per kilogram, annualized power cost, infrastructure and construction, radiation reliability, thermal management, and communications bandwidth and latency. The figures in Google’s paper address some of these dimensions; they do not establish the total cost or operational performance of a deployed orbital data center.
