There is no single official total for how many Spartans exist in Halo. The correct answer depends on which Spartan program you mean, which stage of that program you are counting, and what point in the story the count describes. Official Halo sources publish figures for specific groups and events, but none of them gives a current, franchise-wide census of living Spartans.
Why there is no single number
Halo’s official Encyclopedia glossary defines the term this way: “A genetically enhanced and cybernetically armored human super-soldier of one of four military projects.” The definition is the reason a single total does not exist. “Spartan” is not one group with one roster. It is a label applied across four military projects, and each project has its own recruitment, augmentation, and story timeline. The official sources cited here name SPARTAN-II, SPARTAN-III, and SPARTAN-IV, and they count people in different ways depending on the stage being described.
Before comparing any two figures, check which of these the number measures:

The published SPARTAN-II figures
SPARTAN-II has the most concrete official numbers. The table below lists each figure with the stage it measures. These figures come from Halo Waypoint’s “Canon Fodder: Heart and Soell” article.

- Spartan Enigma with Plasma Gun and Pulse Rifle
- Fully articulated 6.5" action figure Figures are fully articulated for different positions and play with.
- Halo accessories: includes interchangeable weapons and hands.
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED PRODUCT - Officially licensed Halo toy by Wicked Cool Toys, a Jazwares Company.
| Figure | Program | Stage it measures | Scope and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 candidates selected | SPARTAN-II | Selection | Describes the candidate pool, not the Spartans produced from it. |
| 75 taken to Reach | SPARTAN-II | Recruitment | A movement-stage figure, not a count of all Spartans in the franchise. |
| 33 augmentation survivors | SPARTAN-II | Augmentation | Survivors of the augmentation procedure only. |
| 23 died during augmentation | SPARTAN-II | Augmentation | Deaths during the procedure, reported as a separate outcome. |
| 12 washouts rehabilitated as Spartans | SPARTAN-II | Rehabilitation | Candidates who failed initially and were later made Spartans. |
These figures overlap in the story and should not be added together. The 150 selected candidates, the 75 taken to Reach, and the 33 survivors describe different stages of one process, so a combined total would double-count people or mix populations that are not comparable. The official roster discussion also says the accounting has complications, so none of these numbers should be read as a current living total.
The Halo Waypoint pages for these articles do not show a publication date, so these figures are not attached to a specific year.
The Laconia Station losses
Halo Waypoint’s “Canon Fodder: Eklund’s Ensemble” article says that at least 76 Spartans who opposed Cortana’s rule were lost when Laconia Station was destroyed. The article also says a new generation of SPARTAN-IV recruits was deployed afterward. The figure is explicitly a minimum, and it applies only to that event and to the Spartans who opposed Cortana. It is not a count of all Spartan deaths in the franchise, and it does not describe how many Spartans remained after the event.
Why there is no current status roster
The most direct reason no complete list exists is that the official franchise has not published one. In Halo Waypoint’s “Canon Fodder: Encyclopedia Extravaganza,” 343 Industries explains its decision on the public Spartan status list:
“Apart from the space limitations already mentioned, we also had to make the best decision for what content we wanted to reveal at this point in our franchise’s storytelling.”
Rank #2
- Features 1 Spartan Kat figure, 1 Spartan Laser Accessory, 1 Magnum Pistol Accessory, 1 Interchangeable Head, and Interchangeable Hands.
- This Spartan Kat figure is highly detailed and full fully articulated for maximum playability and posing possibility!
- An officially licensed Halo product from Wicked Cool Toys, a Jazwares Company!
- item package weight: 0.24 kilograms
That statement is attributed to 343 Industries as a studio. No individual speaker is named in the source. The same article confirms that some Spartan status details were withheld from the Halo Encyclopedia, so even that reference does not provide a full status list. The Encyclopedia is described on Halo Waypoint in “The New Halo Encyclopedia Is Out Today”, which presents it as the official guide to Halo canon, created with Dark Horse.

If you need a short, accurate answer, use this order:
- Name the program: SPARTAN-II, SPARTAN-III, SPARTAN-IV, or the full four-project definition.
- Name the stage: selection, recruitment, augmentation, rehabilitation, event loss, or status at a point in the story.
- Name the story point or event, such as Laconia Station.
- Cite the official source and check whether it is dated.
Stated that way, the answer for SPARTAN-II is “150 candidates were selected, 75 were taken to Reach, and 33 survived augmentation,” with each figure tied to its stage. An answer for the whole franchise, or for the number alive today, is not supported by the official sources.
