No reliable, representative figure exists for how many personal-computer users run everyday tasks under an administrator account, so this question cannot be answered with a trustworthy percentage. What is well established is which account type Microsoft and Apple recommend for daily use, what each account can do, and how to check your own setup. If you want to gather an informal count, ask readers which account they use, knowing that self-selected answers describe only the people who respond.

Why there is no reliable number

A reliable prevalence figure would need a survey that asks people directly which account type they use for everyday work, with a documented sample, geography and field dates. The surveys that came up in searches did not ask that. The AV-Comparatives IT Security Survey 2026 covers security products and operating-system choices, not account privileges, so its results do not estimate administrator-account use. Any single percentage you see quoted for this question should be treated as unsourced.

Informal polls can still be useful for conversation, but they reflect whoever chooses to answer. Treat the responses as a snapshot of that group, not of personal computer users in general.

Two account types, two different jobs

The distinction matters more than the headcount. A standard account is meant for ordinary work, while an administrator account is meant for changes that affect the whole computer.

Windows: standard primary account and UAC

Microsoft’s Learn documentation calls User Account Control (UAC) a key Windows security feature and recommends that the primary account be a standard account. When a task needs elevation, a standard user can supply the credentials of a local administrator account.

Membership in the Administrators group does not mean every program runs with full administrator rights. A user in that group normally runs apps with a standard access token, and an elevation prompt appears when a task needs the full administrator token. The account and the token an application is using are related but separate, which explains why an administrator can still browse normally without every app running elevated.

Check your Windows account type

  • Open Control Panel and select User Accounts. Your account name is shown with its type beneath it, such as “Administrator” or “Standard User.” Menu layouts change between Windows versions, so confirm the wording on your edition.

macOS: standard accounts for everyday work

Apple’s “Set up your Mac to be secure” guidance says administrators can create, manage and delete users, install and remove software, and change settings. It recommends creating a standard user account for use when administrator privileges are not needed. If several people share a Mac, it also recommends limiting the number of administrator users.

Account setup and the wording of prompts differ from Windows, so follow the steps for your macOS version rather than assuming they match.

Check your Mac account type

  • Open System Settings and select Users & Groups. Each account shows its type, such as “Admin” or “Standard,” beneath the name. Menu names can change between macOS releases.

What a standard account does and does not protect

A standard account narrows what an attacker can do through that account. It does not block every threat, and it does not replace other protections such as software updates, strong passwords and backups. Treat it as one layer of a defense, not a complete one.

A practical setup for everyday use

  1. Create a standard account for daily work. On Windows, open Settings, select Accounts, then Other users, and add a local account. On a Mac, open System Settings, select Users & Groups, choose Add Account, and set the type to Standard.
  2. Keep an administrator account for administrative tasks. Protect it with a strong, unique password and use it only when a trusted task requires it.
  3. Limit administrator users on shared computers. Apple’s guidance applies to Macs used by several people, and the same logic applies to any shared computer.
  4. Treat unexpected prompts with caution. If an elevation or credential prompt appears when you did not start a task, cancel it and find out what requested it.

Sharing your own setup

If you want to collect responses, two questions work well: “Do you use an administrator account for everyday tasks, or a standard account?” and “Which operating system do you use?” A follow-up asking whether extra administrator prompts disrupt your routine adds useful context. Present any results as the views of respondents only.

The Bottom Line

The count is unknown, but the recommendation is consistent: use a standard account for everyday work and reserve administrator rights for the tasks that need them.
