A decimal 1TB drive can hold roughly 185 to 278 hours of 1080p video at the example bitrates of 12 Mbps and 8 Mbps, respectively. These are estimates, not a fixed capacity: 1080p describes resolution, not how much data each second of video uses. For a quick estimate, divide 2,222 by the video’s total bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps).
Estimate hours from bitrate
For a drive sold as 1TB, the useful rule of thumb is:
Hours ≈ 2,222 ÷ total bitrate in Mbps
Use the total bitrate when you know it, including both video and audio. The calculation assumes a decimal terabyte of 1,000,000,000,000 bytes and a constant bitrate. It gives an approximate duration before file-system overhead, metadata, and any unavailable or reserved space.
| Total bitrate | Estimated video per decimal 1TB |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 444 hours |
| 8 Mbps | About 278 hours |
| 10 Mbps | About 222 hours |
| 12 Mbps | About 185 hours |
| 15 Mbps | About 148 hours |
These figures are arithmetic estimates, not measurements of recorded files. Actual recording duration depends on the average bitrate and can vary when a video uses variable bitrate encoding.

Why 1080p does not determine recording time
1080p tells you the image resolution, but not the amount of data used to encode each second. Bitrate can differ with frame rate, codec, image detail, and encoding settings. Audio also takes storage, and YouTube notes that its recommended audio bitrate is not tied to video resolution.
As an illustrative reference, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR uploads at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those recommendations imply about 278 and 185 hours per decimal 1TB, respectively, using the calculation above. They are upload recommendations, not universal camera or screen-recording settings. YouTube’s live encoder guidance also varies by codec and frame rate.

For 1080p HDR uploads, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at standard frame rates and 15 Mbps at high frame rates—about 222 and 148 hours per decimal 1TB by the same estimate. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings provide the upload figures; they should not be treated as a prediction for every 1080p file.

Drive manufacturers use decimal units: 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. NIST defines tera as 1012 and distinguishes SI decimal prefixes from powers of two in its Guide to the SI. Some operating-system displays use binary quantities, so the same drive may appear to have a smaller number of GB or TB. Formatting and file-system use can reduce available space further; the exact usable amount depends on the drive and system.

That display difference does not change the bytes on the drive or the bitrate calculation. It does mean that the estimated hours are a practical approximation rather than a guarantee of how many finished files will fit.

- Find the average total bitrate. Check the recording or export settings, or inspect a representative file’s media information. If only video bitrate is listed, remember that audio and container data add some size.
- Divide 2,222 by the bitrate in Mbps. For example, at 20 Mbps, a decimal 1TB holds approximately 111 hours before overhead.
- Allow room for real-world variation. Variable-bitrate recordings may average above or below the displayed target, and usable drive space may be less than its marketed capacity.
If you have a sample file and know its size and duration, you can make a more practical estimate from that recording: divide the drive’s usable capacity by the sample file size, then multiply by the sample duration. This approach reflects the settings and content of your own footage better than resolution alone.
