The U.S. Census Bureau defines Baby Boomers as people born from 1946 through 1964. On July 1, 2025, they were ages 61 to 79. The Census material cited here does not publish a single total for that birth cohort, so it does not support an exact answer to “How many Baby Boomers are left?” without adding together the relevant age-specific estimates.

What counts as a Baby Boomer?

The Census Bureau’s definition covers people born between 1946 and 1964, inclusive. Because the cohort spans 19 birth years, it does not map to one age: in 2025, its members ranged from 61 to 79 years old. The Bureau explains that the cohort has become less prominent in the population structure as its members age and mortality rises, while younger groups grow, largely through immigration. Does the latest Census source give an exact number?

No. The cited Census article and its population-data landing page do not state a total for U.S. residents born from 1946 through 1964. The latest completed national estimates identified in those sources are Vintage 2025, with single-year age estimates through July 1, 2025. Census National Population by Characteristics: 2020–2025.

To calculate the cohort total from that release, add the resident population estimates for ages 61 through 79 on July 1, 2025. The estimate must use the resident-population series and the same reference date and vintage for every age. Since the cited material does not itself report the sum, an exact total should not be presented as a figure directly stated by the Bureau.

Why the Baby Boomer population is shrinking

The cohort is shrinking because its members are getting older and mortality increases with age. Its share of the overall population can also fall even as the total U.S. population grows: younger age groups become larger, in part because of immigration. A cohort’s declining size and a change in the total population are different measures.

The Census Bureau also describes changes in the older population’s sex composition. Senior demographer Marc Perry said, “Mortality rates for older men have been decreasing faster than for women and, as a result, men’s share of the older population has increased.” That observation concerns the balance of men and women among older people; it is not a count of surviving Baby Boomers. Why the 65-and-older population is not the answer

The number of people ages 65 and older is not interchangeable with the Baby Boomer total. The older group includes people born before 1946, while the Baby Boomer cohort in 2025 also includes people ages 61 to 64. A valid cohort estimate must cover ages 61 through 79—not simply everyone 65 or older.

How to interpret related population statistics

The Census Bureau reported a U.S. median age of 39.4 years in 2025, up from 39.2 in 2024. It also reported a total fertility rate of 1.63 births per woman in 2024, compared with 3.77 at the Baby Boom peak in 1957; the fertility figures are from the National Center for Health Statistics as reported by Census. These figures describe the age structure and birth rates, respectively. Neither is a count of surviving members of the Baby Boomer cohort. Census Bureau, April 9, 2026.
