Lynx Software Technologies announced support for Google Anthos Bare Metal on April 25, 2022, describing an industrial-edge design that ran Kubernetes workloads locally while connecting them with Google Cloud Visual Inspection AI. Lynx said it used virtual air-gapping to isolate system functions; the announcement describes the intended architecture, not independently verified security testing or current support terms.

What Lynx announced

Lynx’s April 2022 announcement combined its LYNX MOSA.ic platform with Google Anthos Bare Metal for mission-critical edge deployments. The stated goal was to bring Kubernetes-based processing close to industrial equipment while still using a Google Cloud AI service.

The announcement’s example follows an industrial visual-inspection workflow:

  1. Cameras capture images of items on a production line.
  2. Google Cloud Visual Inspection AI performs inference on the images.
  3. A supervisory controller turns the resulting insights into action through a manufacturing execution system (MES).

Lynx described the Kubernetes cluster as running locally at the edge. That places the workload near the cameras and plant systems rather than making the entire workflow dependent on a cloud-hosted cluster. The announcement does not specify which processing steps must run locally, what happens during a loss of Google Cloud connectivity, or how the deployment behaves under particular network or service failures.

How Lynx described isolation

Lynx said its design used virtual air-gapping to isolate system functions, and described one-way data-diode connections as an option. These are vendor claims about the announced architecture; the announcement does not provide independent security testing, configuration details, or evidence that every deployment uses the same boundaries.

For an industrial deployment, the key question is not simply whether Kubernetes runs at the edge. It is how image data, inference results, supervisory commands, and management traffic cross boundaries between the plant’s operational technology and cloud-connected services. The announcement illustrates a possible flow, but does not document the exact network rules, trust zones, or controls for a specific installation.

What the product is called now

Google’s current documentation calls the software-only bare-metal offering Google Distributed Cloud software only for bare metal. Google’s documentation also lists Google Distributed Cloud Virtual and Anthos clusters on bare metal as former names. Lynx used “Google Anthos Bare Metal” in its 2022 announcement, so that name is appropriate when describing what Lynx announced, but it is not Google’s current documentation label.

Google’s May 2020 overview described the historical Anthos bare-metal model as running on physical servers without a hypervisor and using an operating system supplied by the customer. It also listed built-in networking, lifecycle management, diagnostics, health checks, logging, and monitoring. Those details are historical context, not current deployment instructions; consult Google’s current documentation for installation, cluster management, upgrades, monitoring, and supported versions.

What this announcement does—and does not—establish

The announcement establishes that Lynx publicly described support for Anthos Bare Metal and a Visual Inspection AI use case in April 2022. It does not establish that the combined solution is available today, define current service levels or support obligations, or identify a currently validated hardware and software configuration. Those details matter before planning a production deployment and must be confirmed with Lynx and Google for the specific environment.

Google later announced general availability of VM support in Anthos on bare metal in September 2022, describing virtual machines and containers running together on a Google Cloud-connected platform at a data center or edge site. That historical product update does not show whether Lynx’s particular integration supports any specific VM configuration today. See Google’s September 2022 announcement for that context.
