Vladimir Lukyanov’s hydraulic integrator used flowing water to calculate how heat moves through building materials. Developed from 1934, it was an analog computer: the water system physically reproduced relationships in a heat-transfer equation, rather than acting as a general-purpose electronic or digital computer.
What was Lukyanov’s hydraulic integrator?
The hydraulic integrator—Russian гидравлический интегратор—was an analog computing machine designed to find approximate solutions to differential equations involved in heat transfer. The Polytechnic Museum dates Vladimir Lukyanov’s work on it to 1934 and says the problem was modeling heat distribution in massive structures. The Polytechnic Museum’s IG-3 collection record describes the instrument as finding approximate solutions to differential equations.
That purpose matters: “water computer” can suggest a machine that handled many unrelated tasks. Lukyanov’s apparatus instead embodied a particular physical model of heat moving through a solid. The museum says his first prototype, assembled from available materials, demonstrated the approach with a simplified scheme that did not include internal heat generation.

The modeled structure was divided into layers, and each layer was represented by a vessel. The water system’s physical properties stood in for quantities in the heat-transfer model:

- Water level: represented the temperature difference in a layer.
- Vessel cross-section: represented that layer’s thermal capacity.
- Resistance in connecting tubes: represented thermal resistance between layers.
With vessels and tubes configured to match the problem, water flowed and levels changed over time. That changing hydraulic system behaved analogously to heat moving between layers in the modeled material, so observing it provided an approximate solution to the relevant differential equations. A 2019 scholarly review, “A brief history of liquid computers”, describes these correspondences between hydraulic and thermal quantities.
How did the machine develop, and what survives?
The Polytechnic Museum’s account places the first prototype after Lukyanov began work in 1934. Later historical accounts describe modular two- and three-dimensional integrators, assembled from standard units to suit different problems; those development details are reported in secondary accounts rather than established here as a complete technical chronology.

The museum identifies its surviving IG-3 as dating to 1955. A museum-focused account in Science and Life also identifies a displayed one-dimensional 1-IGL-1-3. These are examples of documented machines, not evidence that every version or configuration has survived.
How was it different from the MONIAC water computer?
Both machines used hydraulic behavior as an analogy, but they modeled different systems. Lukyanov’s integrator represented heat propagation through material layers; William Phillips’s later MONIAC used water distribution to represent money flows in a national economy. The shared medium does not make them interchangeable or computers for the same class of problem, as the 2019 review explains.

How widely was the hydraulic integrator produced?
The 2019 scholarly review reports that the Polytechnic Museum gives an approximate total of about 150 hydraulic integrators produced in the USSR. It also says some were exported to Poland, Czechoslovakia, and China. The production figure is a museum-attributed estimate, not a verified factory census; the cited account does not establish exact export totals or a precise number of machines used.
